If you were to have Keyspan run a gas line from the street to the house....

Is there gas service in the area? And if so, why isn't the line already in?

When you called Keyspan, did they say that a gas line could be run into the house?
We called them when we were dealing with our house, the gas line is 800 feet away and it has to be within 500/600 feet of the house. It s u c k e d, but

Converting from oil to gas is not cheap. DH & his father did a lot of the work themselves (built a room in the garage for the hot water heater and gas tank and did a lot of the pipe work) and it still ran us probably $7 or $8K for the conversion. We felt it would be worth it in the long run - we prefer gas.

If the line is within a certain number of feet it is free to run the line to the house. Not sure of the number but they will tell you when they call. The actual conversian is exspensive. Around 7-8 thousand. But you would need to speak to your plumbing/heating person. We moved into our house last year and we have oil heat and electric stove. WE want to convert but need to wait a little bit.

keyspan runs 100ft of line for free, but you need plumber to bring the line in your house.
How much it will cost, and how much of an ordeal it is will depend on what you want to do.
Running a line for the stove is easy, and not that expensive. Converting your heating system is much more involved.
