Re: If you were to move off of Long Island

I'm actually moving to st Pete Florida next month, but I also strongly considered Salt Lake City. Maybe if I have a family someday I will make that move.

Whoever said Montana, I was just there Labor Day week and it was beautiful!! I could see why people would want to live there, but the winters are brutal, I personally couldn't deal with that extreme weather.

Re: If you were to move off of Long Island

I love New England/ upper Westchester. So much more space for DS to run and play. We lived in No. VA for a bit and it wasn't bad at all. The economy never slowed b/c of the government. The schools were absolutely fabulous. It was a four hour drive on a good day but it could take up to 8/9 hours during holiday travel...... HORRIBLE

We moved back b/c we wanted family around DS. I could never move away again b/c of that. Sometimes I miss working, I couldn't find a teaching job here on Long Island if I wanted to.

Moved to Southern Cali in 99. LOVE ITChat Icon The weather, being a mile from the beach, my 10 minute commute to work, my very safe community and low utility bills!
It is crowded and expensive to live her so it has its drawbacks but I wouldn't change it for the world.

Re: If you were to move off of Long Island

funny I was thinking about this today

as I get closer and closer to putting roots down on LI and buy my first home- my wanderlust and gpysy soul kick in (I have not stayed in 1 place for longer then 2 years since I went to college)

my top 4

Texas- Dallas- not sure how vegan friendly this would be- and that would be a consideration

Atlanta- same reason as above- but I have this southern thing

LA/Bev hills

Palm Beach/Deray beach FL (my family lives there and if I left NY they would want me there)

Re: If you were to move off of Long Island

Ideally, I'd live in Virginia - nicer weather than NY, but still close, and DH could work in DC.

Financially, I think that either Georgia (Savannah) or north Florida would work out better for us.

If family and money were not a consideration, Napa/San Fran, without question.

We live in Chesapeake VA about 30 mins from the ocean front Virginia beach. Not a fan. I want to move but DH does not. Not sure what the future will bring.

We were thinking, b/c of a possible job opportunity for DH, about moving to Mount Pleasant, SC.

Seems like a nice place.

We lived in San Diego and will return for retirement.

ETA: We moved from Manhattan-San Diego - Long Island. We found San Diego to cost exactly in the middle of Manhattan and LI COL. Houses are expensive, but there are so many affordable options including condos and townhouses. Gas was exactly the same the day we left SD and the day we arrived in NY. Groceries were slightly more than LI less than Manhattan.

Re: If you were to move off of Long Island

CT...Danbury, New milford area. I love it there and right now you can get a house near the water with lots of land for less than our homes on LI...I pay $3000 a month for mortgage and insurance...If I walk around topless or naked...my neighbors can see that because we are so close. I can wave to them while I do dishes. I could spit and hit a bad neighborhood...school district stinks, taxes are high. What the heck are we paying for?

Re: If you were to move off of Long Island

DH and I were seriously considering moving to Bucks county for the past 2 years and were actually looking at houses and I went on an interview and got the job. I backed out last minute- for a few personal reasons.

We like the area because it's within 2 hours driving distance of NYC, 45 mins outside of Philly, schools are good, home prices are low, taxes are low, and i have a BUNCH of family in the area.

We may re-visit the situation in a few years or just stay in NY.

If this was fantasy- I'd have mulitple homes in different cities: NYC, Vegas, West Palm Beach, FL and Rome.

Re: If you were to move off of Long Island

I never really considered a move off of LI. The majority of my family is still here. My sister in in the Arlington area of VA, and while it's still "close" I feel like she is a world away.

If I had to, I'd love to go to the place my dad grew up in - Atherton, CA. (part of the San Fran metro area). I've never been and heard so many great things. But I'd be fooling myself to think we could afford it. Chat Icon

More realistically, I'm more of a laid back New England type of person, so probably the back woods of CT or MA.
