9:15 to 3:15

We had orientation earlier this month and assessments are early June

My concerns- the bus. I am not comfortable with putting my baby on a bus and then not knowing if she made it to school ok. I am used to walking her into her classroom.
I worry she will be scared
I worry how she will get to her classroom once she gets to school
I worry about so many things.
How will she adjust?
She is very shy in certain situations.
Her daycare is the only school she has ever known since 8 weeks old
It's so nurturing and warm and safe there.

I am not ok with it- even a little.
I am in denial

Chat Icon ugh I know.......

my DD has been going on a bus since 3 BUT it was so close to home. And in the beginning I would call to make sure she got there ok. Now, it's further away and Im getting anxious thinking about it.

I don't do the bus because we are too close but, from a mom who is just finishing Kindergarten and was a mess.. your DC will amaze you. Seriously. My kid is such a big boy now. He knows his way around the school and now I am embarrass him when I worry. "Mom you are embarrass me". NOT enough that I don't get three hugs and two lip kisses at the front door of the school, mind you.

DC will be ok. I swear. Just wait for your first class party and you will see. It's kind of awesome.

Ok... wiping tears away now.. because I have an almost first grader now!!!

Re: if your child is starting Kindergarten in the Fall, please come in...

1) What will your DC's hours be? i believe 8-2:30 and then afterschool until 6pm

2) Did they have their assessment yet? no. i'm in queens. do they do assessments? meeting is in june so i guess i'll find out then.

3) What are your concerns, if any. i didn't have any until i read this board. now i'm freaking out! Chat Icon
biggest concern is after school. the school DS is going to has one, but you get in based on a lottery which is not held until september. So for September, i'll need to use his old after school. they will pick him up by bus and drive him over to the actual location. THIS freaks me out! what if he misses the bus? what if they forget him? what if he walks off? what if there's an accident? (going the 6 blocks form one to the other)

the more i think about it, the more i realize i don;t trust anyone when it comes to my kid. Chat Icon

My DS starts in the fall.

1) His hours are 9-3:15 (so excited - our school just adopted full day K)

2) He had his screening back in January and doesn't have anything until his orientation and tour in August

3) I'm most concerned about the logistics of getting him there - sometimes he will be home, sometimes at daycare, etc.

I'm sure they are staggered though due to busing. You have high school, middle school and elementary school, and if they all started at the same time, you would have transportation issues. Not sure how that works in Queens. Most districts offer before care though.

That makes sense and I don't think as many kids are bussed I don't know anyone who sends their kindergartener on the bus around here

He attends Catholic; so no assessments

DS will turn 5 a few days after the first day; he will be one of the youngest in his class. Most of his current class have already turned 5; he is one of 3 that will turn 5 after September.

He also takes a bit to adjust to change, so I know the first few months will have lots of crying and nerves.

They have had homework since the start of the this school year, so he is comfortable with doing it. The last 2 months it has become daily - to prepare them for the workload of kindergarten. I just hope he does not become overwhelmed. Right now its one sheet and a practice letter. Next year will have two subjects a night in math, reading, Phonics, or writing.

DDs school is 830-230. There are 5 elementary schools two are this time and the others I think are 915. I remember my elementary school was 915 growing up.

First of all, can't believe my little girl is going to Kindergarten..anyway lol

1) What will your DC's hours be?

2) Did they have their assessment yet?

3) What are your concerns, if any.

---------------------------------------------------

Me! I can't believe it.

1) I *think* 9:15-3:18. Will double check.

2) No - but we haven't registered yet. We're closing on our house tomorrow!

3) She's the youngest in the class. Her birth date is actually the day before the cutoff. She's academically ready because has been in a wonderful daycare/pre-K for years. Her teachers think that she's mature enough. I'm sure she'll be fine... but I worry anyway.

1. 8:30 - 3

2. Yes, and he had tons of fun.Chat Icon No word on anything yet.

3. He has only been to school three days of the week so I am mainly just concerned about stamina.

Oh, and the bus situation (he is a walker but has to get bussed to the afterschool program.) I just worry about him getting to where he has to go.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: if your child is starting Kindergarten in the Fall, please come in...

1) I'm in queens and the school actually sent a survey around to see if parents prefer 8/830/9 start time...I'm sure most parents will choose 8. I believe hours are 8- 215/230

2) We don't have assessments like that in Queens...they basically just use the first few weeks of school to see where everyone is.

3) DD will be at a new school this year. She actually went to full-time Prek3 and Prek4 at a catholic school, but I've switched her to our local public school for K and the future. I know she's a bit nervous to leave her friends, but she's social, so I'm sure she'll be fine. I'm more nervous about the fact that this is a much bigger school. Her old school had 1 class per grade and the most was 24 kids in 1 class. In her new school there will be 5 or 6 kindergarten classes! I'm also a tiny bit nervous that she will be a bit behind to start...she's bright, but her school just wasn't focused on academics in Prek-- which is FINE, but I know that public Prek is more academically focused. For instance- she has not been taught any sight words at school...and I know that other preks have...so I've been teaching her the first few sets of them.

1) 9:05-3:20

2) Yes, she had her assessment last month and I was told she did well.

3) I can't wait for her to go, although when she does I know I will miss her. Right now, though, she's driving me bonkers and needs to be in school more lol. I'm a little worried about homework since she already fights me on doing the pre-k homework. I'm hoping it's because it's boring for her and K will be more challenging. Fingers crossed Chat Icon

ETA: Now, after reading, I have more concerns lol DD gets a bus, but I will drive her on my way to work. I'm hoping my SIL will be able to pick her up when DH isn't working close enough to get there by 3:20pm. I'm not comfortable with the bus yet. I will re-visit half way through the year and let her take the bus if she wants to.

I'm also a bit worried that it will be too long of a day for her. She's only been in half day pre-k so far.

Re: if your child is starting Kindergarten in the Fall, please come in...

My oldest will start in September. We held him back this year & I'm glad bc I know he's ready but I'm not lol

Hours: 910-320

Had assessment last week but they don't give results

Concerns:
I'm worried about him adjusting to the hours. He's been in 1/2 day prek so this will be shock. Also the whole common core. He gets distracted easily & im worried he won't grasp that well. Even though he will be oldest at 6, I'm worried bc he's shy. Fitting in isn't easy for him

The assessment was last week, his hours will be 9:00-3:15, and my only concern is bullying. Oh and I hate that another kid will be coming home with homework. However I am excited for him to delve more into reading. Chat Icon

I don't live in NY so my son started K already and I have to say I'm amazed at how well he's doing and what he's capable of! I was a mess so worried but he's doing so good, the only thing that makes me sad is that he's a big boy now :(. He gets bussed to after school and everything is very organized. It does take some getting used to though.. What do you mean I can't walk him to his class morning! I'm still getting used to dropping him in front of the building and that's it he walks in himself, even that is very organized teachers are outside opening car doors and putting on backpacks! By the way I'm pretty jealous of everyone that starts at 9, we start at 7:30!

We are starting on Tuesday and I am so nervous. I just can't believe its here already. It really feels like yesterday I could have been burping her and changing diapers. She is very nervous too so I'm trying to hold it together in front of her. I'm going to be a big mess on Tuesday when her bus pulls away.
