I would speak to the class mother and say that you are not paying that much for the three of you to go. You will do the bus if you have to, but if that isn't do-able, then they aren't going
ETA-I totally understand the rules aspect of the field trip (ie that they must go on the bus, etc) but at the same time, they are really asking a lot of you too...

I don't understand - the zoo isn't closed to other people that day, right? So, you could just HAPPEN to have decided to take the girls out of school and to the zoo that day and HAPPEN to run into the rest of the class, can't you? I mean if you have to go anyway, so what the heck is the difference?

That's actually kind of the funny part. Apparently they arent walking around as a class. You get there, get your passes, and then have to be at the bus at a certain time to go home. That's why a parent HAS to go. They arent doing groups and they arent assigning chaperones...

I think you should think about this a little differently. Think about it as a celebration of the end of year/end of elementary school with all your daughters' classmates. Think of it as a memory, an experience, that cannot be replaced by YOU taking them. Pretend it's not at the Bronx Zoo where you have a membership. Send them on the bus (the bus ride is sometimes as much fun FOR THE KIDS  as the actual trip is!). A family visiting the zoo is completely different than visiting with all your classmates as a last 'hoorah' of your days together!
Just something to think about. 
(And yes, with all the legalities and safety issues, I completely and totally understand why the school does not want you driving them)
(I am an educator, in case you couldn't tell )

Unless it's a sleepover at the zoo, this is ridiculously expensive. Last year, we went to the Bronx Zoo for our 2nd grade field trip. It was less than $20.
That's expensive for the zoo. If it were me, I'd take the kids out of school & take them to the zoo on the same day. I don't know what the assemby is but I can't imagine it's life altering to miss.
Also I agree with your girls. The trip is lame.Our 5th graders go to Gettysburg - or something like that.

isn't the season pass $150? I run many school trips in a NYC middle school. To me it sounds like they are trying to force you into a situation where you HAVE to say yes. But it also sounds unorganized and thrown together without any effort. A class trip in which they don't function as a class??? Makes no sense to me! We do a senior trip every year (camp getaway and/or Rye Playland)and group all the kids into groups of 10 (of thier choice) and we assign 1 teacher to every 10 kids.

The season pass is $154...
3 tickets to the zoo via the coach bus is $162...
Apparently, from the word about town, is that a lot of parents werent planning on sending their kids on the trip and were planning on just driving. Partly b/c we all feel that our grade is getting the shaft. Last year they went to a Broadway Play and it was a sponsered PTA event...this year it's not and it's a school event. I honestly dont know what that means but apparently it means something b/c everyone is in an uproar about it...
My DH is a Middle School teacher and always did the Frost Valley trip every year with the 6th grade. He's really annoyed at how the girls school is handling this...
I'll know more about all of this on Monday. But from what Im hearing it's not going to be pretty...

If this is the case, under NO circumstances would I shell out that kind of money. That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. That is NOT a class trip. There is no reason to do that.

UPDATE...ETA: I just found out that a PARENT must attend with their child. So the cost of the trip, for me, is triple. If a parent doesnt attend their child cannot go....
That is ridiculous that you can't drive in your own car!!

At the same time, I would probably just go with the school. I wouldn't want my kids to miss out on the school trip.

I so feel for your kids. When I was in 5th grade our end of year school trip, a sleep over at fire island, was cancelled because 2 kids misbehaved. The punishment was that the entire class was not permitted to go on the field trip. The other school was permitted to go, every other year they have held it. I still feel badly about it that my year was denied this right of passage. I would go to the zoo with your kids, but not on the bus. I understand all that is said about the permission slips, insurance and liability. I get it. The school cannot stop you from being in a public place. I remember the PTA meeting when they told all the kids we could not go on the field trip. It was horrible.

As a teacher, I'm usually all for doing things by the book, there's probably a reason why it's the way it is, blah, blah. But in this case, I'd keep your girls home, get some of their friends from class whose parents aren't into the trip either and do something special with them that day. A nice lunch, a party at someone's house, or something along those lines. This sounds unorganized, expensive and pointless.
