I'm really upset...need advice & reassurance. (long)
I dont normally do this on here but this is the first time I feel like I really could use the reassurance that Im not a horrible mommy. Ok so DS (15 months old) has been experimenting in the bath with dunking his head in the water. I dont want him to be scared so the last 2 times I of course let him do it. He would dunk his face for a split sec & come right back up kind of gasping for air but then would laugh. So tonight he went for the dunk & didnt come right back up. In my head I was thinking let him experiment & so I let him stay under for MAYBE 2 or 2 1/2 seconds. He wasnt moving which I now realize was normal but at the time I freaked out & yanked him up. With that he was REALLY gasping for air, coughing, water came out of his mouth & then he started crying. I made the whole situation much worse by screaming & pulling him out of the bath. I now think that he was having fun with it & that I should have just calmly pulled him up. Here is where I need all of you....
1) Did I do the right thing by letting him stay under for that amount of time?
2) What should I do in the future?
3) Even if it was 3 seconds is this totally not a big deal or am I the biggest A-hole in the world for allowing it to happen?
Im sure Im over reacting so please be kind, I am really really upset with myself.

Awww Stace! I totally freak out when Jack's face gets even remotely near the water so it's understandable that you got nervous.
You probably just scared him more then anything by your reaction. If you are comfortable with him experimenting then I would just go with it - give him a time limit in your mind - and then lift his head up when he hits the limit (don't yank him out again lol)

I totally agree with Donna.... I try to keep myself in check with Kristina when she does things like falling forward or backward, and make sure to keep myself calm and laugh it off... I find that it keeps her calm and she isn't scared by my reaction.

Your absolutely right. But what do you do? Do you let Jack stick his head in or no way?

Me personally - I don't let him stick his face in. He's only tried once or twice - when he gets close I make him sit up more. I just see that damn thread in my head though - the one about the dry drowning over and over when I'm giving him a bath. But, I'm crazy - so you can't go by me!

You are not a bad mom, DS tried to put his face in the water a couple of times when I filled the tub too high. I agree with the other posters - he probably just got scared by your reaction.
It's a fine line we walk sometimes with wanting them to try to do new things and worrying whether or not we should let them do it at all.
Don't worry, he is probably already over it.

Very true. Its obviously very scary to have to judge right or wrong in a split second. Hes definitely over it but its going to take me awhile.

Re: I'm really upset...need advice & reassurance. (long)
DD#1 always loved the water and at that age I used her let her go under all the time. She would crawl around the tub with her face in the water and I would let her stay under until she wanted to come up. She was big enough to get up, so I figured it was fine.

Personally, I don't let DD do that in the tub.
We do Saf-T-Swim and practice going under water but it's only for a second and I blow in her face first. I want her to get used to that before I start letting her go under on her own.
With that said, don't worry about what happened tonight. Your DS won't remember it tomorrow.
