Upset - really need some hugs and advice
I work in accounting doing the daily cash reports, fighting chargebacks and processing refunds. I have no accounting background. Heck I dont even know how to balance my own check book. But I learned. When push came to shove and the pressure was on I rose to the occassion.
Today I get pulled into my boss' office and told "well so and so has an accounting back ground and this change needs to happen so you're going into CS as a regular rep" I said um no. I dont support that change and why cant we just bring her into accounting as a 5th person. He says we cant. I ask why. he says we cant. I said well i really like what i am doing. boss pauses. completely freezes as if he had to think of his next line. then says well i dont like you coming in at 8:10 and not getting started until 8:20. I said understandable. then says well go talk to Z (changed to protect the person)
I go and talk to that person who filled me in on some confidential stuff about things that are going on in his position. They pulled the rug from under him as well on something else.
I talk to a co-worker in accounting who i can completely trust and she is upset. she said if he is going to call you out on being late then he should call out everyone in accounting b/c everyone here has been late on a lot more then 1 occassion. She asked if I ever had a write up or anything. I said no. nothing. never. not so much as a hey you were late today. absolutely nothing. She is puzzled.
I am soooooooooo upset. I really like my job and I dont like how this was even presented to me. It was basically presented well this change is going to happen with or without your support. it can be done the easy way or the hard way.
I have not done a darn thing all afternoon. I have actually cleaned out my desk of all the items they could possible mistake for their own and in fact is mine (like supplies). The only thing I left up are my pictures and candy. dont want to be toooooo obvious.
I just dont know what to do and I am so hurt. I feel so burned. I worked too hard to get pushed down and thats how i feel. I feel like I am moving up the corporate ladder and someone above me is just kicking me down to the bottom. I get to leave in 10 min and I dont even want to return tomorrow.
Please give me so hugs and offer any advice you can. Z actually gave me something to say to my boss to see how that plays out. But I know in my heart that no matter what I say this decision was made and with or without my full cooperation they are going to go through with it. Looks like it;s going to be the hard way

Re: Upset - really need some hugs and advice
your boss might be getting pressure from "above". can you talk to him about this again tomorrow, or is the decision 100% final? maybe there is a compromise that can be worked out?

We got a new COO and he is a CPA so it's possible he could be getting pressure from above.
I could talk to him again tomorrow but just hate to have to come into but I think this is 100% final. They already told the other person she could come into accounting. I asked about a compromise and even creating a position for this person but that got shot way down.
I am actually still here and everyone is gone so I am going to talk to him when the person he has in his office leaves.

Re: Upset - really need some hugs and advice
I'm sorry. It seems like your boss doesn't have a say in the matter really which makes it almost unproductive to speak with him about it.
How many levels up is the decision maker? Is there a chance you might speak with them? Did he say why they need someone with a bg in accounting to take over the position?
At the very least you now know really what kind of work you like to do and if push came to shove you could pursue that elsewhere...
I'm sorry. That's really unfair to do without any kind of warning.

Re: Upset - really need some hugs and advice
I'm sorry this is happening and hope you aren't transferred out of your department.
As you fight this, however, you need to start being the best employee possible. Show up on time, get started right away, keep personal internet and phone use to an absolute minimum, and work as effectively and well as you can -- despite the fact that you are understandably upet. You have to show how badly you want this and how good you are in addition to talking to your boss. Be as reliable and good as you can -- Make yourself someone your boss will want to fight to keep if the decision is above him. I'm not meaning to say you don't do a great job -- just make yourself stand out and give him nothing to complain about in the meantime while this all works out.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Upset - really need some hugs and advice
TY everyone. I am still here waiting. I really need a resolution.
dgirl my boss is the controller. He is directly under the COO. The number 3 guy.
I dont think this position would require a bg in accounting. Their isnt much to it. It's entering info into quick books, writing letters to the credit card people pleading our case and processing a refund which is just point and click. My boss is a fanatic about numbers. he walks around with a calculator in his pocket.
I am just so sick to my stomach. I am anxiously waiting for my boss to finish so I can talk to him. If I dont I know I'll loose sleep tonight and be sick all night
Their was no warning nothing. It was this is the plan of action and well that is how it is. I tried in our meeting to come up with resolutions and compromises but it seemed like it was all so set in stone.
Now I've had all day to sit and think and I just cant take it. So I am going to say I really like my job and what I do. I'd be happy to work out a compromise.
And well see how far that takes me

Re: Upset - really need some hugs and advice
I'm sorry you're upset, but don't look at it as a step down. You're just moving to another department, and just like you rose to the occaison in accounting you'll do the same in CS and really show them what you're made of. The more you know within the company the more valuable you are to them. Think about it, when a promotion becomes available you'll be able to show how you've got experience in both accounting and CS.

Re: Upset - really need some hugs and advice
Ask for a copy of your job description. If having a CPA is in the description as a requirement, then unfortunately they can choose to enforce it.
If it isn't, do you have an HR department?

Good luck! I understand why you're so upset. Anyone would be!
If all else fails, Cindy is right. You'll rise to the occasion in your new department, too. Ask for job descriptions for your current position like someone said, but also ask for descriptions for the position they want you to assume. At least compare them to see if they have the same earning potential, room for growth, etc.
Good luck!!!

Re: Upset - really need some hugs and advice
being a CPA was not a requirement. In fact when I was hired 3.5 months ago they knew I did not have a background in accounting and they still hired me. They knew from day one that I was a CS Supervisor at their sister company and had no background in accounting. 3.5 months later it's a problem.
I did speak to my boss and the only thing he kept repeating was "this change has to happen"
everytime I made a suggestion it was "this change has to happen"
So then I went to Z and i asked him what my options were and he told me basically i have no options.
They wont fire me because if they do they will have to pay unemployement. What I think they will do is they are setting me up to resign. And if I dont take the other position they will treat this as a resignation. They offered me another position and I refused.
I spoke to a few people who said this sounds really shady and why 3.5 months ago when hired they knew I had no bg in accounting and now it's something that is needed. I was completely honest with them. They completely knew my skills and what I was capable of doing.
Thank you all...I've gone from angry to somber and just taking it as a new skill I gained and can add to my resume

Sounds like this new person has some pull. When your boss won't even entertain the thought of a 5th person in accounting and keeps saying "this change has to happen". I would never push some one out to make room for some one else like that. Seems that maybe your boss is getting pressure from above like some one previously posted. You'll either have to make the best of it or start looking for something else.
You said he's moving you to CS as a regular rep and that you were a supervisor at the sister company. Is there room for you to move into a supervisory position?
The new person is a COO and he is also a CPA. I think he is really getting the pressure because their is so much bad stuff going on with the books. I think they need to show those who touch the books has some type of accounting background. whatever.
No unfortunately their is not another supervisor position available. They already have 3. 2 days and 1 night.
I am going to look for something else. Thank you for your kind advice

M- I dont have any advice but wanted to show you support and give you I'm sorry, I would look for a position outside your company, they seem to screw around with you, a LOT. You don't need so much aggravation in your life, you are too good of a person.

I would call unemployment and explain your situation. Your terms of hire have changed and you "may" be able to claim unemplyment. When I was at my old job at a newspaper and the switched my hours from 10am-6pm to 4:30pm-12:30am. I threw a fit and went to HR. The lady was so mean and basically told me my options were to either accept the new hours or quit. She told me in no uncertaun terms that if I quit I would NOT be elligible for unemployment. After working the new hours for a short time, and attempting to get another day time position with the company, I quit. I applied for unemployment and was nothing but honest, because I didn't want it to come back and bite me. NYS found that I was indeed elligible for benefits. My old job even tried to fight and it gave me days to show up for little "trials" after they didn't show for the 2nd time, the whole thing was dismissed and I collected for 9 months.

Re: Upset - really need some hugs and advice
Thanks Deb and Holly. I really appreciate it.
Going back to the old company isnt an option. I asked. Z is actually going back to the old company (he was moved from there to here and now they are moving him back) and we discussed it maybe having him take me over there and unfortunately he cant. A major hiring freeze and they are not in a position financially to bring on anyone.
I am nervous and scared. I've freshened the resume and have started to send some out.
What a bunch of spineless crappy people I work for
I guess this just means that their is something out there for me and this place wasnt it
