I'm so worried about my son HE HAS MRSA!!!!! ** 2ND UPDATE IN 1st POST **

A couple of weeks ago something was going on with his hands. The skin was literally peeling off of them - he almost looked like he was burnt. I took him to his pediatrician and he seemed to think it was some kind of fungus and gave me a prescription for a cream. I couple of days later it still wasn't looking much better so I took him to a dermatologist, who still really couldn't figure out what it was - so he pretty much called it bad excema. He asked me if he had had any viruses or anything, which he had not. He gave me a prescription for another cream - this one worked.

Now today I notice 2 boils on my son - one on his pelvis, the other on the back of his thigh. I thought maybe he was bitten by a spider of something but they never even itched him he said - they just hurt. Of course, I run on google and MRSA is the first thing that pops up when I search the description of what they seem like. I called his pedicatrician immediately but they wouldn't see him because they were finishing up their hours for the day.Chat Icon So, I ran him to Stony Brook er and they have no idea what it is. He has no fever, no other symptoms, etc. They weren't going to culture the boil - they just wanted me to watch them - but I made them culture them. I need to know what is going on - I'm not going to sit and wait. So I should know hopefully by tomorrow or Thurs. what the results are.

I'm so worried about him. I don't know if the boils had anything to do with what went on with his hands a couple of weeks ago. I'm just praying he doesn't have MRSA.Chat Icon

**UPDATE**

We just got back from a follow-up with his pediatrician. He called over to Stony Brook for the results and they were positive - my son has MRSA.Chat Icon

Thank God I pushed for them to culture him - because they weren't going to.

I'm so upset right now. The Dr. says he will be fine - he prescribed him Keflex. Please Chat Icon Chat Icon it will work!!!!

**2ND UPDATE**

It's been a hell of an afternoon. After coming home and doing more research online I learned that Keflex is totally non-effective in the treatment of MRSA - and this was said in about 4 different reports that I read. There have been some incidences in the past that have caused my confidence in my pediatrician to already be on the fence, but this just pushed me over the edge.

So now I took my son to another pediatrician that we used to go to before using my current one and he put him on one of the medications that are reported to be helpful in treating MRSA. I had switched from him originally because I didn't like his bedside manner - but he always really knew his stuff - so now I changed over my insurance back to him.

Thank God this was caught on the early side (and for Google), because if I had used the Keflex and it didn't work and things got worse - I don't even want to think about it.Chat Icon

Thank you all so much for your well wishes and prayers.Chat Icon

Re: I'm so worried about my son

Noah and Robbie each had a zit like thing at the end of last year. Noah's was on his belly and Robbie's was on his backside. The doc said they looked like MRSA - and I freaked. Apparently it isn't the worst thing in the world and is WAY more common than the articles about superbugs and dying people would have you believe. It is mostly serious in people who have weak immune systems to begin with. My sons are both very healthy so they each got medicine and the little boils disappeared within 10 days - never to return.

I know it's scary - but don't let the media scare you more than necessary.

I was hoping they would give him an antibiotic but they wouldn't - which I do understand why.

We have to follow up with his pediatrician on Thurs. If it doesn't look better by then and I don't get any answers, I'm going to ask him for one.

DD's fingers are peeling too but she just got over Kawasaki syndrome...one of the final phases is peeling fingers.

However usually Kawasaki syndrome starts with a fever and a bad rash...which is what happened to DD.

Hang in thereChat Icon
