...is anyone getting really scared???

...is anyone really disgusted at the fact that Exxon Mobile once again made a record profit last year???

...anyone else sick of hearing the excuses from the analysts as to WHY???

Yeah... I really wish there was another option. I told DH that gas will be at least $4 a gallon by the summer.

Re: In honor of oil closing at $107.90 yesterday...

we are in a supply and demand economy.

the more we want something, the more we are willing to pay.

and once we rely on something so far as to "need" it to live, they have us by the throat.

as a consumer....make it your business to consume LESS.

Ambersmom makes a great point. get a bike. take the BUS (Chat Icon Chat Icon ) leave your car at home. I don't know where you all live, but there's got to be a way you can go to the store or run errands without driving. maybe not a convenient way, but a way.

it makes no sense that oil is this high but Exxon is making such a profit. clearly, the market is being profit driven...not all of these other reasons they are spewing out.

FOOD is at a record high. FOOD. more and more people are going to be starving in our own country b/c of the profit driven commodities market. wheat, corn, and soybeans are trading at an all time high.

it is NOT going to get any better. we have shown companies and the world that we WANT WANT WANT. our gluttony is our folly.

Re: In honor of oil closing at $107.90 yesterday...

It is quite disgusting & since gas is used in EVERYTHING, our lives are effected daily. Even airfare has sky-rocketed bc of rising fuel prices!!!

My parents met with their financial advisors yesterday & were told that no matter what anyone says, we have been in a recession for 2 months & that it will remain this way for at least 9 more months but eventually it will all go back to what it was...I guess only time will tell Chat Icon

I am with you Lauren.

we need to be more sufficient on human energy. we have become so dependent on machines and things to do the dirty work for us. it's bad news.

I helped Exxon Mobile last year with my Speedpass. I cannot waste worries on how much it costs to fill up my tank because I have places to go. I pay for Starbuck's, bottled water, organic milk and farm produce, too. The economy will always have tough patches, my Grandma made it through the Great Depression so I can handle a recession.

Analysts say what they are paid to say, don't hate them hate their companies.

Agreed. It's just as much our fault as it is Exxon's.

Sadly, I know very few people who are making real, worthwhile, and permanent changes to their lifestyle. I guess it's easier to complain about the price of gas rather than reduce dependence on an individual level.

the diff Em is that we are not built like our Grandparents.

my grandpa laughs at this recession, but truth be told, the Ipod/Starbucks/Me generation is not made of the same stock.

can you imagine standing on breadlines or bathing ONCE a week?!

I just think that eventually, we will get our comeuppance.

You are absolutely right! But, do you think that maybe, just maybe, it is the corruption more so than the supply and demand. Do you think it's really just us, the public? The billions the we're spending on the war. The fact that G-dubblyah is in bed with the Saudi's? I don't know. I remember when Hurricane Katrina hit and gas prices surged. I walked everywhere and used Public transportation as much as I could. Now, I have a baby, and I live on the island. It's cold out. I don't want to stand at bus stops. I have a perfectly good car. I don't drive unless I absolutely have to. I turn down my heat. Yes we are taking more than the earth has to give, but as far as the price of gas...I smell corruption all the way.

I disagree.

I think when push comes to shove, we do have what it takes to deal with this. We did during the gas shortage in the 70's.

People adjust, that's how we've lasted this long.

oh corruption too of course.

just look at the way all the suburbs were planned...around the use and accessiblity of cars and driving.

our country was BUILT on people driving to get from A to B and consuming oil.

where are the bike paths? where are the pedestrian friendly roadways to get you from home to store and back?

the oil companies and oil makers have firmly ingrained themselves into our society and our psyche.

even here in the city, when there is really NO excuse for driving except for convenience...we do it anyway.

we drive MAYBE on the weekends and only over long distances...but still.

if my husband didn't "need" his car for work, we may not have one at all.

but it's not just oil we are talking about here. the Earth is reacting to all that we have put her through. crazy weather is just the beginning.

it's not about adjusting to the market but saying WTEFF is going on here? what are we doing here? who is getting fat off the land for NO reason other than GREED?

it's so irresponsible for the oil companies to be making such profits when people can barely afford to LIVE.

Re: In honor of oil closing at $107.90 yesterday...

i should be more worried but i am not. my car gets pretty good gas mileage and DH will be getting a car soon that doesn't guzzle gas as much as his jeep does. we definitely don't drive as much just for the fun of it and we try to consolidate our errands into one evening so we aren't running all over the place every day.

that being said, when (not if) gas hits $4, i will sit DH down and ask if he would consider taking the LIRR to work to save $$.

Re: In honor of oil closing at $107.90 yesterday...

Our Mass transport out east SUX. It is virtually non existant. DH has to drive to work, he needs his tools. He does car pool with his employees though to save on fuel. In the summer I walk downtown to stores/bank if I need to go. I am getting a car with 4MPG more than my MDX gets now. I know it's not much but every little bit helps. I buy my produce locally (in the summer of course). I try not lto leave the house if I don't have to!

Considering the age of this earth humans have not lasted a long time. Let's face it we are draining this earth of all its resources and it will only be a matter of time before we cause our own demise unless we learn to adapt.
