Re: In honor of oil closing at $107.90 yesterday...
All of these changes have really made me open my eyes to what's going on. Not that I wasn't budget/environment conscious before, but now I'm giving serious thought to a vegetable garden at my parents/pots on my patio, a bike (with trailer for shopping, taking Amber to the park, etc.) and just finding *things* at home/near home to keep us entertained. I'm seriously considering calling off a trip I had in mind because she really wouldn't know the difference between Boomers and Sesame Place at this point. Between the gas, food, etc., do we really need the expense?

I think we should go back to the days when horses were a means of transportation.
I am with you Lauren.
we need to be more sufficient on human energy. we have become so dependent on machines and things to do the dirty work for us. it's bad news.
Yeah but then the animal activists will tell us it is politically incorrect

I really wish there were a way I could get to work via mass transit. The gas prices are getting ridiculous! And the way they say on the news they'll only get worse...

Re: In honor of oil closing at $107.90 yesterday...
Oil rose even higher today reaching almost $110 per barrel before closing at $108.75.
We are talking so much more than gas prices here.
Here on Long Island it effects not just our gas prices...Home heating (I for one dont have an option of switching to Natural Gas) and that lovely LIPA surcharge has to do with the price of crude oil. Cost of food. If it costs more for school districts to transport our children to school it raises our property taxes...So so so much more than just gas....

YES!
if I only had to pay more at the pump, not that big of a deal. but rising oil prices affects transportation and production - which in turn affects EVERYTHING else.
and guess who the higher cost will be passed on to?

Re: In honor of oil closing at $107.90 yesterday...
I agree that we are not built from the same stock as our grandparents(from the depression era), they actually knew how to grow food, built & fix things, they had small, too cold or too hot living spaces. My Grandmother told stories of starting her bedtime routine by first, picking the bedbugs out of the corners or the bed, then getting in bed(like a full size bed) with 4 of her siblings to stay warm. When it was hot they still slept together. I was a child during the gas shortage & yes my parents survived, but barely. My stepfathers business(ironically the car business) was in the Bronx, we lived in Coram-not such an easy commute when there is no gas. Most of the businesses in Port Jefferson Station & coram closed including the food stores & we had to go to Centereach or Lake Grove to buy food. There were foreclosed houses everywhere, people out of work for months.
This time we should try to be PROACTIVE rather than reactive & perhaps we'll be better prepared. Yes there is corruption, yes our government is in bed with the oil companies but we keep demanding more oil by our actions which encourages them to keep up the bad behavior. I'm reading a book called "energy victory" Robert Zubrin
There are action steps we can take, the plan to break free from our oil addiction is clear. WE AS THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY have the united power to make happen. Unfortunately for every one person that says they are ready to do it, ten say it doesn't matter what they do as they drive their SUV back to the air conditioned McMansion.
Some options for fuel conservation- installing a pellet/wood burning stove in your home going without the A/C this summer going food shopping with a friend(this is great for Moms) in one vehicle buying locally grown/produced items whenever possible turning off computers, printers, speakers when not in use using washable rags instead of paper towels using glass bottles for filtered tap water instead of individual serving plastic bottles
As a side bar a patient of mine that has a great position in the banking industry in NYC told me yesterday there is talk on the street of the "Grimm reaper"- rumor of 40,000 lay offs in upcoming months & in his THIRTY years in his position this is the WORST he's ever seen. His quote "the financial aftermath of 9/11 doesn't even come up on the radar compared to what is about to happen" He is NOT an alarmist.
I'm glad I know how to grow my own food, collect my water for irrigation & my animals, keep animals that provide a source of protein for my family, if we keep going in the direction we're in now, its going to be survival of the fittest.
If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.

I helped Exxon Mobile last year with my Speedpass. I cannot waste worries on how much it costs to fill up my tank because I have places to go. I pay for Starbuck's, bottled water, organic milk and farm produce, too. The economy will always have tough patches, my Grandma made it through the Great Depression so I can handle a recession.
Analysts say what they are paid to say, don't hate them hate their companies.
the diff Em is that we are not built like our Grandparents.
my grandpa laughs at this recession, but truth be told, the Ipod/Starbucks/Me generation is not made of the same stock.
can you imagine standing on breadlines or bathing ONCE a week?!
I just think that eventually, we will get our comeuppance.
I hear you loud and clear but I think bread lines are a bit extreme.

I will be scared in October. Our oil lock is up then. Which is currently at 2.69 a gallon. We were also planning on driving down to Myrtle Beach to visit my sister for about 9 days. If gas is at 4 dollars a gallon we won't bring our SUV or we might just fly. It would be easier than driving down anyway.
