I think the sentences that followed were more shocking than just saying we will be tested.
Of course we will be tested, that always happens. What came after was more questionable
What did you find shocking? I ask because I am curious. I really didn't find anything shocking with what Biden said. I think everything he said was pretty obvious. I think the first 2q of 2009 are going to be tough because that is when the American public will be hit in the face with the reality that we are in a recession after the GDP numbers for 2008 3rd and 4th q are revised down. I think whoever is in office is going to have a rough go because of the global economic issues. i just posted this but we must hav posted at the same time
and to PP; i understnd the op-ed piece i said nothing wrong that was not in response ; as did others

Youre welcome. And if anything, that is the part of the speech i would refer to as "disturbing". We are all obviously going to vote for the person we are putting our confidence in - That being said, they, whomever is elected, should reinforce us in terms of making the american public feel that they made the right choice. Not vice versa.

which sentences were scary?
i NEVER said or used the word scary
The last sentence of this "I promise you, you all are going to be sitting here a year from now going, 'Oh my God, why are they there in the polls, why is the polling so down, why is this thing so tough?' We're going have to make some incredibly tough decisions in the first two years," said Biden. "I'm asking you now, be prepared to stick with us. Remember the faith you had at this point because you're going to have to reinforce us."
MY OPINION I dont want to have to reinforce someone that I vote for! They should be reinforcing US as to why we CHOSE THEM!!
ok, I get it. There are going to be some hard choices either candidate will have to make that will question our faith in them. The message is clear..it's going to suck..remember I said it and I'm not candy coating it. That's what I get from this. Stick by us is actually re-assuring to me. I think it's very real and honest and if anyone thinks the next president is going to be our hero, then they are denial.
I don't envy either of them. It's going to really suck for a while. It ain't roses.

then your opinion says to me one of two things...
that you don't understand what he means by that
OR
you are capable of understanding, but CHOOSE to sway it in the direction of your candidate.

I LOVE Biden's remarks.
I dont' see ANYTHING wrong with them in the least.
GO JOE GO!
honestly and bluntness is refreshing.
he is basically saying WE ARE IN DEEP **** and to get out of it, they may have to make some sucky decisions.
to ME, it's a no brainer and to be expected.
but I applaud him for acknowleging it and reassuring us (b/c that is what I took his speech to do) that they are in it and will be fighting for the long haul for our country to bounce back and come out on top.
This is exactly the way I see it. No matter who wins, we're all going to be b*tching about it 6 months into it. To me, that says he knows that there is no great magic wand to waive all of our problems away.
I think it's crazy that anyone WANTS to be president right now. This mess is too great - and once the cleanup gets underway, I'm sure many people will be unhappy but hopefully, just for the short term.

I have to say when I read his remarks I did NOT see them this way. I read them as something far more sinister. But I like this way better, less scary LOL I will have to think about this one.

OP Ed pieces are never reliable sources.
I agree w/ snowflake when she said "Also, I would be more concerned with Biden's comments about "just give him a chance. Stick with him" showing signes of uncertainty and how this goes along with the comments he made months ago about his running mate not being "ready"."
only foxnews, cbs (who took it off their website), cw11 (who do not have it on their website) and abc who are not playing it as news-but are showing a video of the GOP rightfully using biden's words and calling it an attack instead of reporting it as news as they should. the media is so biased--unbiased journalism is dead.
if palin had made that comment, it would be the lead story on every network- it would not be ignored by cnn or a footnote and then pushed away by other media.
here is the link from abc. fox also has a link and they treat it like news and have a discussion about it, but i know how many of you feel about foxnews. abc link to what biden said
In biden's own words (pay close attention to the quote about if obama becomes pres and the very last paragraph) October 20, 2008 Biden predicts early crisis will test Obama Posted: 08:00 AM ET
From CNN Political Producer Alexander Marquardt
Biden predicts Obama will have to make some unpopular decisions in his first six months in office. SEATTLE (CNN) — Joe Biden told Democratic fundraisers Sunday night that there is no doubt in his mind a crisis will occur during Barack Obama's first six months in office that will test his mettle and force him to make unpopular decisions.
"Mark my words. It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy," said Biden to a roomful of donors. "The world is looking. We're about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America."
"Remember I said it standing here, if you don't remember anything else I said," Biden continued. "Watch, we're going to have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy.
"I promise you it will occur. As a student of history and having served with seven presidents, I guarantee you it's going happen. I can give you at least four or five scenarios from where it might originate."
The Delaware senator spoke at two Seattle fundraises Sunday night, expected to bring in $1 million for the campaign. Biden told the supporters that when Obama will need them to stand with the administration on the difficult calls — not financially, but by using their influence within their communities to convince others that the right decisions are being made.
"I promise you, you all are going to be sitting here a year from now going, 'Oh my God, why are they there in the polls, why is the polling so down, why is this thing so tough?' We're going have to make some incredibly tough decisions in the first two years," said Biden. "I'm asking you now, be prepared to stick with us. Remember the faith you had at this point because you're going to have to reinforce us."
Telling the crowd to "gird their loins" for a bumpy beginning to the next presidential term, Biden said it wouldn't be initially apparent that the correct decisions are being made because "they're not likely to be as popular as they are sound. Because if they're popular, they're probably not sound."
Fundraisers are generally closed to the media's cameras, though print journalists are usually allowed in. Biden appeared to forget Sunday night's fundraiser wasn't closed to reporters, saying, "I probably shouldn't have said all this because it dawned on me that the press is here." Moments later, he ended his remarks.
Interesting response.
Why would you turn this into a Biden thing when I'm asking about Palin?
It's fine if you put no merrit on it, it's an OP-ED piece so OF COURSE it's just an opinion.
I was just wondering what McCain/Palin supporters thought of it.

Re: Interesting Op-Ed Piece regarding Sarah Palin
I'm going to stick the original topic.
While it's an Op-Ed piece - which is someone's OPINION, it does bring up some interesting questions. I know I've tried to figure out the strategy myself.
I thought the pitbull with lipstick strategy was perfect until the interviews & the cutesieness during the debates, which seemed very un-pitbull like. I thought she was a clever & interesting choice at first too. (I wouldn't vote for her because politically I differ).
Now that they seem to contradict each other often or she seems to have gone "maverick" on her own, I'm still trying to figure out if this is strategy or just poor choice because dividing the Republican party isn't what they need right now.

what I honestly think is maybe they've (the repubs) have given up on this election and are posturing her for 2012.
from what I've read, they've been "grooming" her for a long time. she did something similar to the former governor of Alaska...he helped her climb the rungs, and then she ran against him and beat him.
they don't call her barracuda for nothing.

i felt it deserved some discussion, since anything and everything about mccain and palin seem to get that on here. but it seems that ended up not being the case.
however, my opinion on this OP-ED is that it was written by someone who is anti Palin and is doing whatever he can to discredit her and the rebublican ticket.
i miss the days of unbiased journalism...

#1- start you own thread if you want to discuss something else
#2- you can start as many McCain threads as you want- you might only get 5 posters- but go ahead
#3- OP-ED is an opinion- and therefore biased

I wish I had $1 everytime a McCain/Palin supporter said this--we could probably pay off our mortgage. In response, I would like to ask, where is the media in regards to G. Gordon Liddy? I have seen no big expose about his relationship with McCain. Are they examining whether or not McCain "palled around" with terrorists also? No.
In response to the OP, it's hard to say what's going on with Sarah. It's an interesting piece, though it just presents an opinion. Maybe she is a true maverick, more likely she is trying to make a name for herself, and may be digging in deeper since Obama has gained some ground. I can't blame her, this may be her one big shot at either a higher office or a future higher office.

Re: Interesting Op-Ed Piece regarding Sarah Palin
I'm a supporter, so I'll stick with the original question.
Being an OP-ED, I weigh this differently than another piece. But, it does bring up interesting points.
I think part of the appeal of Palin to McCain is not that she is a Maverick, but that she is a Conservative when through the years, he hasn't been the most Conservative. Sometimes in politics you do use the VP or secondary candidates (in a gov's election, the Lt. Gov or maybe the local Assembly member running with you) to stir things up and bring out items you don't want associate with your name.
In terms of the Biden speech (and I know I am breaking rules! ) I actually get what he is saying -- no matter who gets into office, their first two years are going to be rough and they will be scrutinized by America...and you know, what I say to that? GOOD.
