Re: Intermittent fasting
Also, every one is different when it comes to what they can and can't eat to lose weight. My husband is insulin resistant and absolutely can't lose significant weight- and KEEP it off- unless he is doing keto. He had tried everything from weight watchers to sensible eating, to South Beach with no real luck or sustainability.
I, on the other hand can eat carbs and shit until the cows come home with little to no effect.
So what works for one person, will not necessarily work for another. A lot has to do with your own personal metabolism, how your body processes insulin, genetics etc.
That is why some on this thread say the intermittent fasting is all they need to lose weight while others have had little to no effect from it.

Re: Intermittent fasting
Interesting, I may try this. I tried Keto and after two weeks I couldn't take it anymore. I never wanted to see another egg or piece of meat again LOL.

Intermittent fasting
I’ve tried keto and yeah, I couldn’t last. I also don’t like eggs or beef so I basically ate chicken, broccoli and cheese sticks.
I haven’t done much research on it, but scientifically, I don’t really see how intermittent fasting alone would do much. Maybe if you’re eating chips at 10pm every night and stop, you’ll see results but that’s not called intermittent fasting, that’s called cutting calories. If you replaced the chips with celery you’d lose weight, too.
If you do it in conjunction with a diet, it’s the diet that’s making you lose weight, not the intermittent fasting.

I've been doing it...combined with a 1200 calorie diet. I've lost 25 lbs. I started in April and lost all 25lbs within 3 months. I don't eat anything (other than having coffee with milk) prior to noon. No food after 7pm.
My husband's friend has also been doing it. He doesn't follow any calorie restrictions like I do though. And he's lost 15 lbs. in the last 3 months.
Wow! Could you share what you eat in a typical day?
So, I eat very low carb, higher protein, and a lot of veggies. I try to stay away from sugars. If I do eat a carb or a sugar I ALWAYS pair it with a protein of some sort. Your body breaks down carbs differently when it's also trying to break down a protein.
I have coffee with half & half in the morning.
Aside from that, I drink water with lemon the ENTIRE day.
At noon I have a salad with grilled chicken, chick peas, cucumbers, avacado, etc. I add a few croutons to it (I measure out a serving size) and I use Newman's Own Light Balsamic dressing because it's the lowest calorie with lowest sodium - 2 tbsp.
For a mid-day snack I have some almonds with low-sugar craisins, OR 10 Nut thins and a light baby bell cheese, OR a Think Thin Protein Bar.
Dinner varies, but I try to stick to No or very low carb meals at least 5 days of the week. That might be fish and veggies with 1/4 cup of rice, or a veggie burger topped with salsa and avacado and black beans, or some kind of meat with veggies on the side. Once in a while I'll have a slice of pizza or something, but I try to limit that to once every few weeks.
And I always save some extra calories for myself to have a drink in the evenings
Honestly, I try not to eat out (or at least in the beginning) much because it's much harder to know what you're eating. And one of the biggest things is portion control. I use salad plates for my meals, never dinner plates. Dinner plates are larger and you tend to fill it up, but if you use a salad plate it's easier to keep your portions smaller.

Intermittent fasting
I am on day 4 of intermittent fasting. Not as bad as I thought. I always ate breakfast immediately so I was worried about headaches, being cranky etc but for some reason I have not been. I drink black coffee and that seems to help and a lot of water. I am eating from 12-8 and started with 20 mins cardio during the fast in the morning. Have not weighed myself as it has only been four days. My stomach feels smaller and looks less bloated BUT I am constipated. I read that others have this problem in the beginning. I am still drinking alcohol and I am sure that does not help. I am also not eating the best food but I am not snacking so I hope to see some difference!!!

Re: Intermittent fasting
So... I officially did it for a week so far and have to say, I am liking it and feel it's something I will be able to stick with. I am constantly trying to lose weight. My whole adult life. I've tried many things unsuccessfully mostly because I feel deprived. I love food. With this, I think the fact that I know my eating window is coming and I'm not restricted by WHAT I eat, just the TIME I eat it is keeping me motivated. I also need to say that I am not making the best choices with my food (for example had some fries today and a brownie yesterday lol) BUT I am very strict with my times (now doing 11:30-7:30). I haven't had a calorie after my eating window is over. That is huge for me because I am a snacker after dinner. I also am craving ice cold water and have been great about drinking lots of it. I'm also noticing I am getting fuller faster and my appetite has lessened. I am down 2-3 lbs. and feel motivated to continue because I can see this as a lifestyle change for me. Not a diet that I will fail at... again.

Good to see that it’s working for you. You have to be realistic and not cut out foods totally, so don’t be upset about the fries and brownie.

Re: Intermittent fasting- UPDATE on 2nd page
That’s great! I should try this too as I often find myself snacking late. And I think 11:30-7:30 is a very realistic eating window so that’s smart. My friend tried something similar but from 12-5. Who eats dinner at 4? So hers never made sense to me.

Intermittent fasting- UPDATE on 2nd page
That's awesome OP! I'm going to try this. I sometimes don't eat breakfast until 10 or 11 anyway. My issue is eating that 2nd dessert around 8 or 9 (yes, that's right. I said 2nd dessert).

Re: Intermittent fasting- UPDATE on 2nd page
Glad to hear you feel good doing it! I do too and I like feeling more in control.
But just remember that it's not actually a "diet". You still have to be aware of your calories, because if you're not in a deficit you will not lose weight, no matter what time you eat.

Exactly. If I eat 5000 calories a day but only between the hours of noon and 5 pm, it's still 5000 calories a day.

Very true. I think the reason it works for many is bc it naturally cuts down on your calories. You're likely to eat a lot less in 7or 8 hours than if you're eating for 12+hours. I couldn't eat three full meals and snacks in that time if I tried so I end up with two meals and a snack instead of lunch or three small meals.

Yes! on weekdays I am not hungry before 11 am. Some days I don't eat my "breakfast" at work until almost noon. So I am not hungry for lunch at all after that. Sometimes around 3 pm I will want lunch but it's usually small. So even though I am not consciously doing intermittent fasting, my eating schedule kind of works out that way and I can see how it cuts down on what you eat. When I eat my breakfast so late, I never want lunch

Intermittent fasting- UPDATE on 2nd page

^^ 100% agree. I highly recommend trying to track your caloric intake with MyFitnessPal for a week or two. This will just help give you a better understanding of how many calories you're taking in on average and how much each food is actually worth. It helps you to make better decisions during your eating window...or realize that you CAN have that brownie or cookie during your window and not feel guilty about it because you're still staying within your calorie goal for the day.
And to the OP - so glad you're liking it so far and already starting to lose!! I've failed at other diets too in the past. Overall, I've found intermittent fasting to be a very reasonable long-term lifestyle change and very easy to maintain. Wishing you continued progress

Intermittent fasting- UPDATE on 2nd page
Weight loss is all about calories in vs calories burned.
If you do not eat less calories than you burn then you won't lose weight, no matter what time of day you eat the calories.
Fasting helps some people stick to their calorie goals more easily but you can't just eat whatever you want.

Yes. Intermittent fasting is not a "diet". It's a tool.
It does help some people with insulin resistance because every time you eat you do spike insulin. So if you can reduce the number of times a day you eat, you are spiking insulin less. I think the good thing about it for the average person is you are not mindlessly eating at 11 pm while watching TV.
This explains it (and the science behind it) well.
