Re: Irrational thoughts?
I constantly think about this.. constantly. I just want them to fit in and not be the outcast.. I just want them to be happy!
When I was younger, there were a couple of boys on my bus that would tease me, pull my hat off, made me cry. I saw one of them working in Starbucks near my moms house the other night and I STILL remembered him and what a pr*ck he was to me when I was little. I will never forget it and it just always stays with you. I NEVER want them to go through that.
My sister was bullied her entire school years.. K-12..because she looked different. I get so angry thinking about it I can't even imagine if that was my child.. I would be a lunatic!!

Re: Irrational thoughts?
Karate all the way.
these thoughts are not irrational at all. especially since your abby is socializing.
I hope to raise my son to be strong enough to intimidate the bullies, but soft enough to know that being mean is utterly and totally unacceptable.
I don't care really what group he falls in to or where he is on the social ladder, as long as he does his best grade wise and is happy, well behaved and good to others, I will be fine.
I WILL kick some bully mommy or daddy *** though. kudos to ChrisDee.

Re: Irrational thoughts?
My niece has Asperger's syndrome and is constantly bullied. I have SOBBED over it (not in front of her). I am crying now typing this. I want to take her to school every single day and sit with her and DARE any of the kids to say something to her.
We found out that she has been giving up her lunch because they told her that is what "friends" do. I try to teach her to stand up for herself but she doesnt always "get" that she is being bullied.
It is heartbreaking and I dread going through it with my younger nieces and nephews and eventually, this baby.

Re: Irrational thoughts?
I don't think it is irrational. I think about it too! I was fortunate that I had a very good school experience - I was never picked on, bullied, etc. I was very involved in activities - varsity sports, student goverment, etc. I really hope DS has a similar experience that I had - I just want him to be happy and healthy!

Re: Irrational thoughts?
I think about this too. When I was a child, I had my share of bullies and teasing. I've worn glasses since kindergarden and I've also had weight issues. What my main concern is when she's old enough to date. When I was 16/17 I had my first relationship which turned into an abusive relationship both physically and verbally. My parents had an idea what was going on but they were afraid of interfering because it might've drove me even closer to my abuser and farther from them. I don't blame my parents. I had to get out of the situation myself in order to see clearly. I have no idea what I would do if Shaylie was in that situation. When she does get to the dating age, I plan on sitting her down and discussing this.

Re: Irrational thoughts?
I fear the same thing. I had some issues fitting in growing up and I hope DS doesn't have to go through it. DH didn't seem to have any issues fitting in - he lets things roll right off of him, hopefully DS will be like that!

Re: Irrational thoughts?
I think about these things all of the time. I guess part of it has to do with the fact that I teach in a high school and I know how kids can be. I do worry about how DS will grow up.

Re: Irrational thoughts?
I think about it all the time...I tend to sometimes think that I'm overcompensating because of things that I went through growing up...nothing traumatic, but just things that I now look back and say I want that for my child..I can't really verbalize it well..but I def think of how my parenting will mold her into the person she may become later on, and will she be a creative free spirit type or all the other possibilities....

Re: Irrational thoughts?
my DS is only 6 months old and i think about this all the time! i put all of my hopes and dreams into him and just want more than anything for him to be happy...whatever version of happy is to him. i pray for him every night and would do bodily harm to anyone that ever hurt him. its normal to worry for them. I dont think your thoughts are irrational at all.

Re: Irrational thoughts?
As a teacher, I think it might be even harder...because I see what my middle schoolers go through every day and I constantly picture Lily at their age! Each year, I see a little girl who I want my Lily to be like when she gets older. And a few little girls that I never want her to be like.
On the positive side.....since I work in a 7-12 building, I get to see the kids grow up.....and a good number of them stay as nice as they were in middle school....so there is hope!

ITA! As a teacher, looking at children and how they behave all day long, I think about DS being in school and how he will fit in and what type of child he will be. I am so scared that he will get his feelings hurt, etc. That kills me. I guess all we can do is try to make them comfortable and confident in who they are and hope for the best.

This is so heart wrenching. Chelsea has a friend at school. He has aspergers also. She always looks out for him and makes sure he doesn't get picked on. This in turn has made him think that she likes, likes him. But she always reminds him that she is his friend and that's all. She's a good kid. Maybe your niece has a friend like this?
Your daughter sounds pretty awesome! My niece had a friend like that, Sarah, but now they make sure they are always in a different class b/c she was becoming too dependent on her some kids ARE nice though, but there is always that group of bullies you know. . .

Re: Irrational thoughts?
As a middle school teacher, it does scare the crap out of me. DD is only 14 months old, but I think about it. She already has a sweet personality and although she is small in size, she is feisty. She loves being around other kids and is really curious, and DH and I always wonder (and hope) aloud that she will always be this way. Seeing how middle school girls in particular treat each other really freaks me out. I give a LOT of lectures to my students about how to treat each other, even telling them how I was treated in middle school and how it made me feel.

Re: Irrational thoughts?
As I was the kid always picked on in school, I think about this often. My mom didnt do the best in the self esteem catagory (although she doesnt see it that way) since she used to pick on me too. I wish I knew how the "picked on" and bullied children were chosen. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to me. I always was easy going and laid back and if someone made fun I would kind of ignore it and laugh it off or laugh with them (still do). While i always thought this was the right way to go about it, perhaps I was wrong? Perhaps these "pickers" and bullies need to be shoved back immediately. No easy going, no laid back attitude. I dont know the beswt course, but I worry
