Is $50 an ok Daycare Xmas gift for teachers?

I have 5 I need to give something to bc DD changed rooms in November, plus the Director and 2 assistants.

I was planning on giving the 5 teachers $50 gift cards each, the assistants a gift valued at $10-15 and $25 for the Director?

Am I being too cheap? DH is ready to kill me with all the tipping....

Personally, I think $50 gift cards for the teachers is overly generous... but then again I have been known to be very cheap. Curious to hear what others think!

Re: Is $50 and ok Daycare Xmas gift for teachers?

To each his own, but I think $50 is a lot. Last year I gave 5 women each $20 gift certificates because he was in 2 rooms. This year, I have the same thing again and I was planning on giving them all $20 g/c. I didn't descriminate between the teachers and assistants cause they all do an equal amount of work. I never even thought of giving the director a gift...she sits in her office all day. I was also going to bring in cookiesor bagels or something, for everyone.

ETA for clarification, each room is one teacher and one assistant (if it didn't say which was which on the door, I wouldn't even know the difference). I also have one girl who goes where needed and she often in those rooms.

Re: Is $50 an ok Daycare Xmas gift for teachers?

This is my first year so I don't know what the norm is. The assistants really don't do much - one is in the room for 30 minutes in the morning (with other teachers) and the other is in the room for 30 minutes at night (sometimes by herself sometimes with another teacher). If DD didn't switch rooms I was going to give her 3 main teachers $75 each...Chat Icon DH is right - I am insane. I just want to be generous - they do such a good job taking care of DD and I really like them. If my mom watched her all the time, I'd get her more than a $50 gift...KWIM? I hate not knowing what to do!!

i think that is very generous if you can afford to do it, but definately not the norm, and probably not expected...i would say 30 for head teachers, MAYBE 35..15-20 for asst. and somewhere in between for the director..or even just a basket from edible arrangements..

Re: Is $50 an ok Daycare Xmas gift for teachers?

I think that is VERY generous! I think $20 or $25 would be fine, and I'm sure they would appreciate anything!

Re: Is $50 an ok Daycare Xmas gift for teachers?

I'm giving $50 to the Director/Head Teacher, $25 to the other teacher and $20 to the aide that comes in to close (so she's only there for about 30-minutes when Ryan is). I might add little trickets but that's what I'm giving cash/GC-wise.

I must be a real cheap-o because I only got $10.00 gifts..that's because they're on a rotation schedule and her "regular" teachers are long gone. Who knows who will even be getting the gifts that dayChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is $50 an ok Daycare Xmas gift for teachers?

I think $50 is definitely very generous, but then again can you really put a price on the care/attention they give our DC? If you can afford it go for it.

I'm doing $25 gift card and maybe some brownies from Fairytale Brownies (These are the most fantastic brownies BTW)

Re: Is $50 an ok Daycare Xmas gift for teachers?

My day care provider is a woman who works out of her home with one assistant. Last year I got her a $30 gift card and the assistant $25. This year she has lost several children due to layoffs, pregnancy etc, including my DD in Jan. So I got her a $50 gift card and her assistant who is new and I don't know very well, a $25 one.

My DH would kill me if he knew how much! He doesn't think we need to tip her at all. Chat Icon

Re: Is $50 an ok Daycare Xmas gift for teachers?

I can relate. Last year I gave the two teachers $50.00 American Express gift cards and a really nice basket for another teacher. For some reason I thought there were only two teachers and then realized there were three. I am going to give all of them gift cards this year.

Christine with that many to buy for I would do either a lunch or a breakfast. That is a lot of people to buy for. My girls love to get a free mealChat Icon

HTH

ETA:

You could then give the 3 main teachers a $25 GC if you want to give them something extra.

If you write a really nice card to them and give them a meal I know they will be very appreciative.Chat Icon

ETA again:

I don't think gifts are necessary for the director and her two assistants. You could give the Director a box of chocolate or something like that. I usually get stuff like that or Bath and Body stuff. Most just write me a note saying nice things about the center. I have never had a parent give my assistants gifts.

Now I hope this helpedChat Icon

I gave $50 last year to my DD's 2 teachers but this year I have 2 kids in daycare and can't afford to do it again. I think they will appreciate whatever you give but my attitude were these people watch my children all day and I know they are not paid great so I like to show my appreciation.

ITA with the above sentiment.

Teachers at our center are pretty steady, not much turnover. We were planning on tipping the two teachers in the room. I guess our plan is on the generous side as well. They work very hard, are entrusted with the daily care of our children and make nearly minimum wage. I would give what you feel comfortable with and what you can afford.

For the rest of the staff, about 12, we are sending in a platter of assorted meats, cheeses, breads for lunch.

I feel like if my DD was in daycare and not preschool I would probably do $50 Chat Icon

DD is in preschool and has 5 teachers (no assistants) and I'm doing $20 gift cards with small Vera Bradley wallets that I got on sale and I may send in some kind of food treat as well.

I think that is a lot. We are going to buy breakfast one day (bagels, coffee, Dunkin donuts, etc.) and then get gift cards for the 2 main teachers. I haven't decided how much yet.
