is 8lb considered a big baby?
DD2 was born 8lb 1oz. When she was born some people made comment she was a big baby. The other day at Kohls a lady was looking for size help for a gift and asked me how old dd2 was and big she was at birth . When I told her 8lbs she went on about how she was a big baby. Seriously lady your asking me for my help but then insulting my daughter?!
So is 8lbs considered a big baby?
eta: I should clarify that she had said other things that were more insulting but my real question is is 8lbs a big baby? dd1 was less than 7 so this is all new to me.

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
No. Not at all. I think that's average. Not big or small. Just a perfect and healthy size. I would never consider it big. I think over 9lbs I'd say big, but still within normal. Plus, birth weight means nothing. I've seen kids born big that thinned out and were either small or average size and babies born early or tiny and then got big (also meaning real tall and stocky).

I think 8lb is on the bigger side but not by too much. 7ish pounds is about avg, in my book.
ps: I don't consider it an insult when somebody says that a baby is big - it's just something people say lol

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
People just call every baby a big baby. My daughter was 7lb when born and was only 18lbs at a year old and yet everyone always talked about how "fat" she was. She is short and was BF so she did have cute pudgy cheeks and the weight showed on her tiny frame... but so many people would go on and on about how I must overfeed my 18 lb one year old! How she was so chubby and big. Meanwhile she was the smallest baby I knew. so dont take it personally.

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
i think most people think 7lb is "normal" so using that perspective, 8+ is big and 6 is small
DD was born 8lb 5 oz...and i never thought she was big.

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
I think 7-8 is considered "average" and anything below 7 is considered "small" and anything above 8 is considered "big" (obviously moreso as you get further above/below). My DS was 8 lbs exactly and while he was big he was still small :)

IMO 8lb is on the bigger side of average. DS was 8 lb even at birth. Lots of people commented on how big he was. I would probably say something if the baby was 9lbs + at birth.

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
A lot of people mean that in a good way - every single person in DH's family equates BIG with HEALTHY when speaking in regards to a baby.
A nice, big, healthy baby!!!
That's all I heard was how GREAT it would be if you had a NICE, BIG, HEALTHY baby -- well, when my son came out 7 lbs they were all like OMG BEEF HIM UP, feed him more, he's so skinny, he's so tiny, he needs to eat, is everything OK?!?!?!
We can't win if we try, huh??

is 8lb considered a big baby?
I feel like 8lbs and over is when people might start to consider babies a little on the bigger side. DS was born exactly 8lbs and I considered him to be big. Then again, he was in NICU and his neighbor was barely 4lbs. So in comparison to the other babies in the hospital I saw him as big.

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
I'd say over like 9 is big. 7/8 is average. I think people do mean "big baby" as "healthy baby". But an 8 lb baby is still so tiny in the scheme of it all.

I don't think 8lbs is that big, above average but not huge.
And why is saying a baby is big an insult?

I think 8 lbs. is the upper end of average. I also do not think calling a baby big is insulting. I always equate big with healthy when referring to babies.

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
I think people have NO idea what a baby is suppose to look like in general at each age and stage..........even birth.
My DS was born at 9lb 4oz but was the skinniest thing, people were shocked he was so "big". He's a year now and everyone says, "Oh he's a healthy boy. OR What a big boy" meanwhile, the kid has actually been 35-40th percentile for height and weight since he was 2 months old!! He looks like a peanut.
On the other hand, my DD was born 8lbs 8oz and averaged 90% percentile her whole first year for height and weight and everyone would comment on how "little" she was............and she was A LOT BIGGER that whole first year than my son who everyone thinks is "so big".
Nobody knows what an average baby looks like and most people don't have a clue as to what a baby is suppose to even look like month to month so I've learned to just let those comments roll. People just always feel the need to comment on a baby's size even when their comments make no sense.

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
I really think, in this day and age, that 8lbs is normal/average. I'd say below 7 is small, and above 9 is big.

high side of average!
DS was 8.7lb and he is the largest of all 6 of mine/my siblings kids
I think 7.5 is average. 8.5+ is "larger"

I think 8 is above average but 9 to me is "big". My son was 8.7 and I was happy he wasn't small bc he always felt manageable never breakable

Agreed. My DS was 8 lbs 9 oz. he was pretty normal sized IMO. I also don't understand why it's an insult when someone says a baby is big?

This! it's such a small swing from pound to pound so it makes me laugh. my DS was also 8lb 1oz and yet if he was 7lb 13oz, people would say "oh that's a great size!" lol... so now, I personally don't consider it big.

is 8lb considered a big baby?
The average size baby boy is 8 lbs 4 oz.
I consider anything over 9 to be a larger baby; anything under 7.5 to be small.

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?
I think thats pretty average. I consider 6 to be a small-ish baby. 7-8/9 to be average, and 9+ to be big.
My boys were 9.14 and 9.8 so I get those comments all the time. The only child I consider big at 8+lbs was my friends child who was born a month early and was 8.5lbs
