is 8lb considered a big baby?

I'd say very close to or over 9 is big and very close to 7 or under is small. In the long run, it doesn't matter. I was close to 9 pounds and was the shortest, skinniest kid I was barely on the charts. My sister was 7 something and is 5 inches taller than me now. I also think they pump most moms so full of fluids these days during labor that a lot of babies are born bigger than they would be otherwise.

I think 8 is above average but 9 to me is "big". My son was 8.7 and I was happy he wasn't small bc he always felt manageable never breakable Chat Icon

Agreed! DD was 8.6. Those few pounds made a world of difference to me Chat Icon

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?

It is on the bigger size of average, but not enormous. To me 9+ is a big baby. Is the baby also long? My kids were in the 7 lb range but super long. People would always comment on that. I think it is more of something for people to say. Also, since you just gave birth, your pregnancy hormones are still in you. So things people say which might not bother you normally, *may* have a different effect right now.

My DD was 8lbs 2oz and I thought she was small considering my size, my husband's size and the fact that she was born at almost 42 weeks.

I don't think so - DS 1 was 8lbs 2oz and DS 2 was 7lbs 14oz and I thought they were about average...

I consider the high 8s and above to be large...

People talk out of their @ss. 8lbs is perfect. I'm sure this isn't the first of word vomit that has come out of this woman's mouth. People who make those comments tend to just lack in social skills.

I never considered it to be a big baby but my DD was born at 8 lbs on the dot and people commented that she was big. Chat Icon

I just respond with that's the high end of average. Big to me is 9+ lbs.

I think people are getting used to seeing smaller babies now because of the high rate of inductions (taking babies out sooner than 40 weeks), multiples, premature babies, etc.

If 8 lbs is big my DS was enormous! LOL He was 9lbs 1 oz at birth. By the time he came home (he was in NICU for a week due to an infection at birth) he was eating almost 4 oz of formula.

DS was 8lbs 1 oz when he was born and I think people are saying that he was a big baby because I am very petite (5'2").

This is DS exactly! Born at 6lbs 7oz and at 11 months he is in 18 month clothes. I can't believe how much growing he did in a year!

Re: is 8lb considered a big baby?

No. My smallest of 4 babies was 8lbs 6ozs. Largest was over 10lbs. People did make "big baby" comments with all 4 babies, but 8lbs is very common now a days.

oh i already explained above that it was more what she said and the way she said it. like a look of disgust. like i have a huge baby and theres no way the baby she was buying for would ever be that size.
she also called dd a "he". she was in all pink and a pink car seat and cover Chat Icon
but otherwise when people said big baby i was never insulted just wondered because i always throught it was average size. Dd1 was less than 7lbs when she was born so this is new to me.

My kids were 8 lb5oz, 8 lb 9 oz, and 8 lb 14 oz.

My last 2 had to have their sugar levels monitored after birth because they were considered "large".

Anything over 8 lbs is considered on the bigger side.
