Is a birthday party on a school holiday like Columbus day annoying? Update!

Just curious. If we threw dds bday party on Columbus day, would it be more likely that a lot of her friends wouldn't be able to come? Do a lot of people go away that weekend? Are a lot of parents still working that day? Several of her friends have parents that are teachers and will be off, and several are SAHMs, but some probably will have to work...

Just a little update for anyone who might want to plan a party on a school holiday in the future. We invited 20 kids assuming we'd get at least a handful of No's, and 19 said Yes! So we are over our minimum of 14 and will have to pay extra for the additional guests, but at least dd will have a lot of friends to celebrate with her!

For me, it would be very difficult because I work that day.

I have never been off for Columbus Day in my life. A lot of companies are open that day. It would be a no go for us because I work.

We go away that weekend probably half the time. If we weren't going away I would be perfectly fine with it.

I think you'd get a good turnout. I have to work, so it wouldn't be good for me, but I think enough people would be able to attend. We went to a party on President's Day and a lot of people were there.

This. I'm not off and neither of any of my friends. But, no teachers or SAHMs in my crew. I would feel bad for the one or 2 parents who can't take their kids because they have to work.

For working parents yes beucase I think most are not off that day.

IMO any party during the week and during the day is inconsiderate to every working parent.
Granted I did have a Friday night party at 5:45 knowing people wouldn't be able to come because it was to close to when they get off but I was OK with that because we invited 45 kids and we could use the no's. Also felt for Friday night it wasn't to inconsiderate. Though this year if I have to have it on a Friday again I will have it start later at like 6:30. Which I was going to do this year but didn't

My job is open on Columbus Day (although my DD's daycare chooses to close that day so I am stuck taking off work). I think it would be hard for working parents to send their child to a birthday party that day.

I work that day, so it would depend on the relationship. For family or a bff, I'd find a way to go. Otherwise, no.

I think people either tend to be working or go away that weekend.

Dh is off, but I'm a teacher at a private school and work, but I'd still be fine with it.

We just went to a party on Labor Day, and are having ds 1st bday Columbus Day weekend.

We couldn't go. I wouldn't expect a huge turnout.

Pretty much all of her friends except maybe 1 or 2 have moms that are teachers, or stay home/work from home. So I guess I'm more curious if a lot of people go away that weekend. I know that's the big weekend for pumpkin picking usually.

Re: Is a birthday party on a school holiday like Columbus day annoying?

We typically go away on extended weekends but if we were around I'd go. If they're mostly people you're close-ish with I'd maybe throw the date around and see what people say. You never k ow, some people may like having something fun to do that day if they have nothing already planned .

I don't think it is annoying and I work. I would have someone bring my DS or try to arrange a friend to take him.

Gives them something to do!!

Exactly. In my world, if a parent works, they send their kid with someone else. It's really simple!

I think people just get so bitter and caught up with the fact that something is scheduled during a "traditional" work day, that they immediately write it off as a NO to be spiteful, because they think people aren't mindful of working parents. In reality, the host does what works for them ultimately Chat Icon I'm glad to see that wasn't your case OP!

Thanks! Yes, it would make sense that even if the parent has to work, whomever watches their child that day could bring them. I have at least one child coming to the party with that situation. Her grandparent will bring her, and her mom is very happy she's invited even though she has to work that day.
