Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

Why or why not? As I get closer to the date I feel that I want to try to take this route, but everyone says the epi is a life saver!!! Any opinions or advice would be appreciated:)

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

I totally am. Well my first delivery I went in with an open mind, that if the pain was too much and I couldn't handle it I would ask for an epi. Which it did happen...only thing is I have scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and they had a hard time giving me the epidural. They injected it 3 times in my back and it never worked..never had the effects of it. Therefore for my second I figured I did it without any meds the first time I can do it again. Plus I don't want to go thru having my back stabbed several times again Chat Icon

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

I had always planned on going natural...no drugs, and did it for about 17 hours until a c/s was needed due to complications.

I am planning/considering it. I guess my main reason(s) are that I've heard the recovery may be a little easier. Also, I would really like to BF as soon afer the birth if possible but heard that sometimes after being medicated both the baby and/or mother may be too groggy to BF. I also like the idea of being able to move around freely during labor for as long as possible.

But who knows what will happen when the time actually comes Chat Icon.

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

I am. After taking lamaze, speaking with a doula there, doing research, reading birth stories, watching movies, etc I think I am very informed on how the body works during labor/delivery.

There is no way I can know if I can handle the pain until I actually go through it, but I am going to try to use all the techniques i've learned when in labor.

I'm also going to try to labor at home for as long as possible to avoid interventions.

I know my plan change at any time due to circumstances beyond my control but I am going in knowing i'm going to try my hardest to have a natural birth.

just so you know, I had a c-section and fed dd within an hour of birth and had her with me, in my arms the whole time I was in recovery

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

Yes, I did it with DS and hope to do it again. You never know what you're in for - but I always had the mindset that I wanted to give it a shot when the time came and not to worry if "the plan" didn't work - that's life. When I got to the hospital with DS, I said to myself, "ok, if this is 3-4 cm dilated, then I'm ready to be signed up for an epi - if I'm further dilated, I'll stick it out longer - I was 9cm already).

I def. want to give it a shot... I never liked drugs... and just the way that it is stuck in your back I don't like. We'll see how I am when that time comes around though. lol

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

I didn't until very recently-I have somehow developed a major fear of the epi. I also found out that my mom delivered both me and my brother without it(me-7lb10oz, my bro-9lb2oz) so I figure if she can do it so can I. However, I haven't taken any classes or done any preparation for a drug-free birth, so I may very quickly change my mind when I actually go through it.

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

Yes, I am definitely in the mindset that I want to go as long as possible without drugs. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, having been through several surgeries/recoveries, kidney stones and ruptured cystsChat Icon

That being said- if I need it, I need it and I won't be ashamed or disappointed in myself if I can't do it.

I am pretty much the same.

If I can do it without, great, but my mamma didn't raise no martyr..and if it's beyond what I can stand, and I can't stands no more...I'm getting the shot.

Pretty much my exact story as well, except they tried about 8-10 times before getting the epi in, and it also never took effect on me. What I am considering next time is a doula because when the pain was at its worst, I had nurses (who were great and I really cant complain about them) who encouraged the epi and kept asking why i wanted to avoid it, and were telling me the pain could last a lot longer and get a lot worse. i think having someone there encouraging me not to get the epi would be a huge help. I felt like I had to keep justifying it last time and everyone was saying come on, get it, why not. (the why not for me is bc it's only 50/50 that it will work, which I knew going into it, and it's very difficult to put in my spine, and the worst part is sitting there not able to move for 30 min w someone unsuccessfully stabbing you in the back saying cant you bend more, please try, just a little more. and me saying, no i can't, my spine is fused, it does not bend and there is nothing i can do about it!)

Same here!

(Although I'm a BIG baby when it comes to pain, so I'm not holding out too much hope. Unless the hypnobabies program that I'm planning on taking can work miracles.)

I haven't considered a natural, non-medicated birth. I have a low pain threshold.

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

I have every intention of going naturally without meds. It's just a desire I have. I feel as though I really can do it.. People have been doing it for ages- so I'm sure I can give it a shot. A second factor might be the anaphylactic shock I went into years ago when a dr administered pain drugs.. I'm okay with dying in pain if it means I don't die from drug allergies.. Seriously though, I am going in with the mindset that I will NOT have drugs. Should I need a csection, I better have a great set of drs on hand god forbid anything were to happen

I delivered with a midwife the first time and this time as well. My midwife was very open minded and told me that if I wanted to get the epi---not to be ashamed and ask for it. But like I said definately for #2 I'm going for the whole midwifery experienceChat Icon

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

I went in without a plan, and thank God I did because everything went a little wacky. I ended up delivering without pain meds after 17 hrs of active labor (and 2 weeks of pre-labor Chat Icon) and it hurt more than i could ever describe. And i've been through ruptured ovarian cysts the size of peaches.

Re: Is anyone considering a natural birth with no meds?

I've been fortunate enough to have 2 drug-free births. I did tons and tons of research and, although many people have wonderful epidural experiences, there are side-effects and some of them are pretty bad. I really felt like it was best to avoid it if possible.

My first birth was long and difficult and I can totally understand why some women feel they need an epidural. My second was a breeze and drugs would have been completely unnecessary.

If you really want a drug-free birth, find a supportive midwife or doctor. It's very hard to go natural when you have a nurse asking you every 15 min if you are ready for your epidural yet.
