Is anyone else worried about Swine Flu again

I felt like it had died down in the media the last few weeks but all of the scare is back up again.

How worried are all of you?

Re: Is anyone else worried about Swine Flu again

Honestly...pretty worried.

Unfortunately, I feel helpless so I am going to do the best I can and just kinda listen up for advisories and work from there.

I'm also in SC, in the military so the cases down here have been pretty scarce.

Re: Is anyone else worried about Swine Flu again

I'm concerned b/c I have my baby signed up for Daycare already to start in Sept. I just don't want to worry about the other kids. I know the daycare is extremely clean with the toys and they have an air-purifier in the baby's room and it's further away from the older kids classrooms, but it still worries me. I really hope they come out with a vaccine soon.

honestly - i'm not even remotely worried.

the NORMAL flu kills more people every year than the swine flu had (at last check that is)...

i think the media plays into knowing that they can scare the living daylights out of people and enjoys it!

Re: Is anyone else worried about Swine Flu again

I am not anymore concerned then I am during regular flu season. I am actually flying this weekend & honestly I have not considered postponing my trip at all. I make it a point to wash my hands constantly but I do that during the regular flu season. I honestly do believe that the media is again blowing things out of propotion bc of the one death in NYC now.

Re: Is anyone else worried about Swine Flu again

To an extent yes, and to an extent no.

I actually just got sick and ended up at the doctor. Turns out I just have a virus, but the doctor brought up the swine flu to see if it was a concern of mine. I honestly didn't think I had it, but she did rule i out.

As far as the swine flu, I asked how concerned I should be, especially since pregnant women shouldn't take the treatment. She said at this point, it is just like having a normal flu, it's milder than what they saw in Mexico, and to take similiar precautions as I would with any other flu. She said the media is very hyped up, and to just make sure I wash my hands, and take care of myself.

I am pretty worried about it. Alot of the confirmed cases here in Maine happen to be in the area where my baby shower will be....im hoping things start getting better. I just heard on AOL news that a NYC assistant principal died this past weekend from it.

Yep, I agree. I think people are getting worked up over nothing. It's just a strain of the flu (all flu viruses mutate...that's why we have new vaccines every year). We're in a country with advanced medical care and swine flu is treatable now. The media is making this out to be some sort of epidemic Chat Icon

I disagree. YES the swine flu is treatable now but - the issue is much more complicated for the people on this board. It is my understanding that the drugs being used to treat the Swine Flu are Category C drugs - which, as you know can not be assured to be safe for the baby. On top of that - pregnancy makes your immune system weaker so you are more susceptible to complications. So, YES, I am concerned. But, am I altering my life over it - no. I have a toddler and we are still out and about (classes and playdates) as we were before. My DH commutes the city everyday so he is exposed to but this is a part of life.

It is also different than the regular flu b/c no one is vaccinated against it - so it will likely spread much faster. And, here it is spereading like this when it is not even typical flu season...

I also don't think the media is hyping it for no reason any more I mean how many schools in a very small radius are closed? And, a man, a teacher and a father in our area who was previously fine is now dead b/c of it...

Re: Is anyone else worried about Swine Flu again

It has hit me "close to home" so of course I am concerned. 2 weeks ago my boss was home sick with the flu along with his whole family but was back in the office the next day contrary to Dr's orders. As a precaution my HR dept advised me to stay home for a while so I wouldnt come into contact with him. Today's his son's NYC school was closed due to swine flu exposure. When people around you have it or have come into contact with it is no Chat Icon matter. Esp if you are pregnant or have a young child at home.

Yes and no. For now not necessarily any more concerned than I would be in the winter with the regular flu. Only b/c I will have a newborn soon and one of the reasons I plan for spring/summer babies is that I don't want to be trapped at home with worrying about taking the baby outside during flu season for walks or to the park (even if I don't take them to stores)- but I'm not happy about it in general. I am concerned that it could get worse while it is a mild flu now - that doesn't mean that it will be mild for YOU or YOUR child - and if it mutates then that is where more of a concern comes in.

I agree with all of the previous posters. I am actually a teacher at St Francis Prep, the first school that shut down, and am 5 months pregnant. I am taking the normal precautions that I would if anyone around me was sick. Yes our immune systems are vulnerable at this time, but not any more vulnerable to this swine flu than to any other flu. I went to my high risk doctor during this whole "ordeal." We technically can take the drugs, although because of the lack of research on their affect on pregnant women and infants, I would be hesitant to. My doctors advice was that if I feel at all sick, go to the ER, not L&D, and tell them your situation. If people would take precautions, this probably would not have spread as far. They close the school to sanitize it and to prevent it from spreading, meanwhile, all of the kids are hanging out together outside of the school. Also, every single person that has died, each one tragic, has had other conditions that have made the treatment more difficult. Just keep clean and away from sick people. Just my opinion.

Re: Is anyone else worried about Swine Flu again

I'm only 5 1/2 weeks and we found out today that there are 4 cases in my school. Its an early childhhood building so I think it could spread quickly. Eveyone keeps saying its not big deal. But, it is to me....but no one knows I'm pregnant so I can't voice my concern. I told my school nurse just so that she'll keep me updated. I called the doctor and she said there's nothing we can do at this point.

Yes and this is what worries me. When your pregnant your immune system is not as good. It is only a "mild" case as some consistently point out but I dont want to be sick period while I'm pregnant b/c I dont want to have to take any medications I dont need to, including tamiflu and other category c medications.

I bought anti-bacterial hands wipes and lysol everything!!! I also make sure not to come to close to people if i'm out so they can't sneeze or cough on me and I dont tough food or my hands to my mouth, nose, etc. unless I have washed my hands. I am making sure I disinfect DS who is 2 as well.

People keep claiming this is only a flu...but it is spreading like wildfire b/c there is no vaccine against it so anyone and everyone is susceptible. Flu viruses generally thrive in the cold weather which is another reason this virus may be staying mild. If it were the winter, who knows how serious it would be.

All in all, being pregnant, I prefer to not get sick at all, including a cold, and to not take any medications, including antibiotics, unless I absolutely have to.

I HATE when people come into work sick, especially with something like this. I think it is rude and inconsiderate. And good for you for taking off from work.

During this whole ordeal my boss was sick for several weeks with a cough and on and off fever and some other symtpoms. He came into work too Chat Icon I told him to stay away from me and I lysoled our desk and entire office (it's a small office) every time I worked. Luckily it turned out he had mono something I didnt have to worry about catching but swine flu is the first thing I thought about.
