Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
DH and I will be TTC soon but I am so worried about possible genetic disorders. A friend of mine recently had a baby and found out that he has cystic fibrosis. The tests during her pregnancy all came back negative. There are no occurrences in either family. It just got me nervous. Is anyone going for genetic testing/counseling before TTC?

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
First off it sounds like some one screwed up with your friend. It was explained to me that both parents have to be carriers of the CF gene to have a child with CF. She should get a copy of her records and if it does say negative she should be retested for everything since they must have screwed up the test or gave the results of some one else.
As for you, you can make an appointment with your ob/gyn. I went to mine when we were ready. He did a pap and exam, discussed family history and sent me for some testing. I was checked for CF and Jewish heritage diseases (ie Tay Sacs). If you come up positive they will test your dh. good luck

i had some testing done before ttc...the doc said it was a good idea but it's really a personal choice...i mean, even if you get a positive test result it doesn't mean that passing something on is 100%. it can help you take preventative measures if need be.

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
I got tested before I had DS. I just wanted to know if I was going to face anything. My father is adopted so I have zero medical history from his side of the family. I felt it was important for me to be prepared in any event. Thankfully all of my tests came back normal. I had the cf and jewish panel of tests there were 13 vials of blood taken at that visit.

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
Before we started fertility treatments, we were asked for an extensive history. We were given a packet about CF and were told that the testing was recommended, but optional - and only one of us had to do it... so we did.
A close friend of mine was tested because with her background, Tay Sachs is something to be concerned about... she actually unfortunately had a similar situation as your friend and was told that her and her husband weren't carriers, but their daughter now has Tay Sachs.
If you have anything in your background that would put you at risk I would get tested... and if you want to do the CF testing also, you might as well. It's just a simple bloodtest!

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
We were advised by our OB to get CF testing done although I don't really think we were at risk for it. She just tested me to see if I was a carrier.

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
I am not TTC yet but my dr recommended that I go to see a genetic dr bc I take certain medications that I don't know if I will be able to continue while I am pregnant. And plus I am in my 30's already so I want to get checked out

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
Our dr did the testing. Nobody in my family ever had CB so I didn't think I needed to get tested. It turns out that I am a carrier (and therefore 1 of my parents are too...they just never knew it). DH got tested and fortunately he wasn't a carrier, but it's a good thing we did do the testing.
I will say that it was a pretty tense time waiting for his results.

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
Can I ask where everyone got their testing done? Is it expensive? Do I get tested first or do DH and I go at the same time?

Only I got tested and if + then dh would of had to go. I got a script from my ob/gyn to have it done. It was actually performed by Quest and it was covered by insurance

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
I did get tested. It was done at a Quest lab (they drew a few vials of blood). Thankfully, my insurance paid for it.

Re: Is anyone getting genetic testing/counseling?
We had genetic counseling before TTC because we are both Ashkenazi Jews. However, I went more for the geneticist to discuss my medications and their effect on TTC. No matter what, we are trying for one on our own.
