Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
The more I think about it the more overwhelmed I get and I part of me wants to keep it really small (immediate family only). Off course I love my friends and extended family but it is just soooooo many people (atlreast 60) and I just don't know if I'm up to it (espcieally since I feellike we just had a huge baptism). My one concern is that my son will be missing something really special.
If I don't to the big deal I will still have a small party with immediate family (maybe 15 people) and have fun with it.
What are your thoughts? I would love to hear both sides

We did not have a party for DS. Close family for dinner and cake. Simple and no stress. DS doesn't remember it lol.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
I'm hoping to do a big 1st b-day and a very small christening. I think it should be one or the other. I would never want to do two big parties in one year. Its way too much work and way too much $$$.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
I'm only having like 35 people at our house for his birthday. I feel like since birthdays are every year, theres nothing TOO special, where one is more important and another, kwim? I had a big christening, over 100 people, but he's only gonna have 1 christening. Birthdays will be every year so I dont feel bad about it. Thank god I dont have a DD yet but I will be passing this theory on to her when it comes time for a super sweet 16!

This is what I'm talking about! I just feel like the stress of planning another party will get the best of me Especially since $$$ is tight!

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
We had a small birthday party for DS but spent way to much on it for the number of people. We will have a small birthday party for DD but I now know how to shop and where to go to get good food near me for a lot less than we paid last time.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
me!
Didnt go big on first or second bday
Both time we've taken her to the Zoo. interesting to see how much MORE she's aware and into the Zoo this year than last year actually.
I personally felt big parties were a waste of money, time and effort. She had no idea what 'birthday' meant much less that it was HERS on either her first or second, so why bother?
For us it was about FAMILY and for that very important first bday it was about JUST us .. the three of us. I made sure of it. Finally a day to celebrate the insanity of the year before. To remember "at this time I was just seeing her again for the first time" etc. It worked well for us. It was meaningful and private.
But, I admit for her 3rd bday its going to be different. We are going to the zoo again and then in Oct/Nov we're taking her to Disney! So you could say we'll be making it up to her!
ETA: both birthdays though I've spent about $150 to $200 on really nice professional photos though.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
I had a big 1st birthday party for both my boys. I think It's more for us (parents) than the birthday child. I'm sure it will be special no matter which one you decide to do. The most important thing is that he will have the people who love him most there!

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
We are keeping it small and simple - close friends and family - about 20 people total.
I prefer it that way.... it seems more special to me to celebrate her first year of life with the people who actually have seen her grow during that time.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
Me! Immediate family and our closest of friends for dinner and cake at our apt - that's it for us. I'm a simple gal at heart and would've done the same for the christening but for DH's family. DD's the first grandkid for his family so I let it go then but no more - it was way too much of a pain for me to do.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
Normally. I probably would not do anything big, just family at the house for cake and stuff..but I did nothing for his baptism other than immediate family and 2 friends at a restaurant after the christening.
so i dont think I can get away with not doing anything..especially since half my family hasnt eve MET ds yet

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
DS's was pretty small...around 30 people total...mostly family and few close friends. As AP said, I don't think it's necessary to have a big birthday party - he won't remember it anyway, birthdays come every year and a big party means even more toys around the house...and he has plenty already.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
I am feel the same way. I am becoming really stressed out over the first birthday, which is in Oct. After going back and forth about renting a place, I have decided to have it here at the house. If I invite family and friends, I am looking at around 60 people also, and it is just way to much for me to handle on my own. And my famlly member that don't have young children are completely useless and don't help out. I am thinking that I am just going to invite friends who have kids only. But, then there are some who are childless who I would really want there. It is just so stressful because I can't please everyone.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
Me!
Was planning on it, then decided against it.
We will be taking her to the zoo on her birthday then to a toy store. Have cake & presents with immediate family. I think it will be nice.
Planning the party, the $$, running around the whole day.
I think it will be a fun intimitate day I can enjoy with DH and my little girl. I honestly think she will enjoy that more than her backyard filled with 100 people. Just the 3 of us, just like it was that day

If I had a huge babtisim like you, I would keep the party small. We didn't so his birthday is the big event for us.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
I really don't want to have a party out but I feel bad not having anything. Ideally, I would like to do something at home, but our co-op is just waaaaay too small to do that.
The solution I have come up with is to have a dinner at a restaurant with immediate family and our closest friends (which comes out to 40 people ) We are having it during the week also because DD's birthday is Dec. 28 so the weekend before and after is Christmas and New Years, plus its helping to cut the cost down

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
If you had a huge christening, I would keep the 1st birthday party small- especially since money is tight. Invite close family / friends & have coffee & cake.

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
I'm undecided. We're having a big Christening at a catering hall this weekend..about 80 ppl. It would be the same ppl for her birhtday and honestly, it's a lot. BUT, my family is huge just aunts/uncles & cousins on my side is about 40 people, sooo IDK. We have a big finished basement, so I was thinking of just doing it there..but I think my mom will want the big party. I just don't know..

Re: Is anyone NOT doing a big first birthday?
We didn't, we had just our family over (20 people)for a big dinner, some cake and goodies. We decorated and made it really cute.
