I can't believe some of the things I'm reading on this thread. George Floyd died that day because he was murdered by Derek Chauvin. Period. End of story. I can't wrap my head around anyone thinking differently. It's on video. How much clearer can it be?
ITA
Nobody is saying that he didn't - it's just a question of what type of murder will he be charged with due to the facts surrounding the case.
I think most people are concerned that they will get away with blaming Floyd's death on something like the drugs in his system and then Chauvin gets off easy when in reality, he's 100% to blame for his death. and should get a very stiff sentence. Guess we'll see.

Re: Is anyone watching the Derek Chauvin's murder trial?
What I keep going back to is those other 2 cops who stood there. Just stood there. I mean you had one psychopath on the scene. And then you had 2 other psychopaths that did not think, for a second, to try and stop it? To say something? To pull him off? Not just one guy... but 2. Out of all of them nobody thought, damn I should step in? 2 other people with no conscience? Were they all of the same mindset?
Every time they show the clip on the news, my DH is flabbergasted by that. He keeps saying how he would be physically pulling Chauvin off of him if he were on that scene...
I would love to know the stories of the others. What was going through their heads? Were they scared of Chauvin? I know one was a rookie- but I just cannot comprehend what went on.

ITA and I say the SAME thing to myself every time I see that video. How could ANYONE sit idly by while that man was being abused and killed????? Did none of them have any humanity or empathy????
It's a police officers job to secure the threat, they did that quickly. WHY at that point wasn't Floyd immediately handcuffed and placed in the police car? He was not trying to flee, he was face down begging for his life and yet those other officers sat there and ALLOWED Chauvin to restrain him for over nine minutes. It makes absolutely no sense. They are all accessories to murder and should be charged as such.
How do you get FOUR heartless, cruel, criminal cops all in the same situation at one time? It's really unbelievable. The whole situation was disgusting.

It's disgusting and I don't understand how they can even defend him. If anything was a cut and dry case, this is it. He should have saved everyone all the time and pain of watching this again by just pleading guilty.
I have not watched the video but I was reading this really isn’t a “cut and dry case” and the prosecution will have an uphill battle. Partly because Chauvin was using an approved choke hold and there wasn’t damage found to George Floyd’s airway-which would cause reasonable doubt as to why he died. I’m not saying I agree with the argument just putting it out there.
It is as "cut and dry" as you can get. OVER nine minutes of an officer kneeling on a man's neck who was BEGGING for his life and begging for AIR and who was NO threat while 3 other officers looked on doing NOTHING. That POS will hopefully rot in jail for the MURDER he committed.
I disagree that he is not entitled to a fair trial. That is a huge part of the basis for our entire judicial system. Everyone, no matter what they are accused of, is entitled to that.
Also, he is charged with multiple counts of murder so I don't think the question is so much "Is he guilty of murder?" but "what kind of murder did he commit?" since each come with very different outcomes at sentencing. I am sure he will get found guilty of murder or manslaughter.
That being said, Floyd's death was caused by a combination of Chauvin on his neck and the fentanyl and methamphetamine that Floyd had in his system (as per the medical examiner's report) so it might not be as cut and dry as you think.
I don't care what drugs (illegal or not) are in a person's body because the fact is, if someone places a knee on your neck and presses down for 9 minutes you will be gasping for air and die. Period. He could've been hopped up on anything and everything but drugs didn't cause his death. A knee to the neck did.
The cause of death as per the medical examiner was a combination of the two. It’s in the report. So clearly a trained medical doctor believed it was the combination of the two.
And yet the independent autopsy that was ordered by the family does not indicate the same.
At the end of the day, it's ALL ON VIDEO. How anyone can even attempt to defend that garbage cop is beyond me.
Independent Autopsy Ordered By Family
"The independent autopsy was conducted by Dr. Allecia M. Wilson of the University of Michigan and Dr. Michael Baden, a former New York City medical examiner, who also conducted an independent autopsy on Jeffrey Epstein and testified at the O.J. Simpson trial. Their autopsy also found that Floyd died not just because Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck, but because the other officers helped hold Floyd down. For instance, another officer’s knee, pressed against Floyd’s back, reportedly compressed his lungs and made it harder for him to breathe."
George Floyd Cause of Death
"The autopsy found that sustained pressure on the right side of Floyd’s carotid artery impeded blood flow to the brain, and the weight on his back, handcuffs and positioning were contributing factors that impaired the ability of his diaphragm to function."
I'm sorry but the private autopsy that the family ordered, the physician has every reason to provide an answer that is in line with what the family is looking to hear, since they are the one's paying for the autopsy. I trust the chief medical examiner's opinion on cause of death more than any independent person.
I do believe that Chauvin is responsible for his death, however I also think that the high level of drugs in his system contributed to his death.

Is anyone watching the Derek Chauvin's murder trial?
It says so much to me about people who look to blame drug use as a big contributing factor to a black man dying after a white cop kneeled on his neck for almost 10 minutes...as he gasped for air, pleading for his life and cried out for his mother.

No one is blaming drug use but to deny that it MIGHT have been a contributing factor is strange to me as well. No one is saying he DESERVED it. No one is saying Chauvin is innocent. Just that drug use may have contributed.

It is probably too upsetting to watch the trial for many, especially since chauvin will have a lawyer defend him.

I am not defending their actions at all, but I watched all the videos and even read the body cam transcript. Floyd was resisting arrest and refusing to get in the car due to his claustrophobia and anxiety. They tried to reason with him several times but he became erratic. I had the same reaction at first and questioned why they didn’t just put him in the car.

Sorry but I (along with most of this country) think a knee to the neck for over 9 minutes on hard pavement is what "contributed" to his death.
There is no reason whatsoever for Chauvin to have pinned him down for that length of time. When a man isn't a threat to you and is begging and pleading for his life while gasping for air, you get the f@#k off his neck. Period.
Changing the conversation to be about what drugs he was on is nothing more than victim blaming and a sad attempt at taking the focus off the criminality of this cop.

Yes BUT there came a point where he was restrained. That was the time to finally put him in the police car. Just because he resisted in the beginning doesn't mean you get to sit on a man's neck for almost 10 minutes, it was EXCESSIVE force at that point.
Furthermore, as someone who is severely claustrophobic and subsequently suffers from panic attacks when I feel trapped I completely understand why he'd panic. I am not excusing his resisting arrest but I understand the panic and it can overwhelm you and make erratic. I know because I have been in that position myself.

No one is taunting anyone. This is silly - it was a contributing factor. It's completely different than saying a woman was asking to get raped because she drank too much or her clothes were too revealing. But clearly a trained medical professional, who I am sure has performed thousands of autopsies, considered it important enough to determine it contributed to his death.
I brought it up because hofstra insisted that it was a "cut and dry" case. I don't think that it's cut and dry because he is facing several different counts of murder/manslaughter. In fact, if it was completely cut and dry there wouldn't be the need for multiple murder charges as they would be sure to get a conviction of the one cut and dry charge.
I completely forget that we can't have an intelligent discussion on here without being referred to as a racist. I know you are saying you are not referring to me specifically but I am the one that keeps bringing it up, so I will read between the lines on this one. But I can assure you my bringing this up has nothing to do with race. I would say the same no matter what the color of his skin was.

But for people to keep bringing it up over and over in an almost taunting way reminds me of how some people try to justify a woman being raped if she was drunk or a prostitute. It’s almost as it it’s a way to justify it somehow. Why keep bringing attention to it over and over? Unless you either want to upset people and troll or you are a racist. Not you personally, but people in general.
I should clarify that I was referring to reading comments on Facebook under news articles and in other online groups where people are discussing the trial and not this thread. I didn’t see taunting here on this thread but I have in other places.

It’s not blaming the victim. If you have ACTUALLY been watching the trial and not the narrative that has been put forth to prepare for rioting then you would know there were other cameras that showed his knee on Floyd’s shoulder, not neck. There are so many MAJOR details that have been under or non-reported about this case it’s gross. The prosecution is crumbling.

Is anyone watching the Derek Chauvin's murder trial?
The only thing gross about any of this is the murder of George Floyd. There were times when the knee was on the back, but not the entire 9 minutes. How anyone is defending this disgusting human being is beyond me. You know what? If this man is acquitted, and riots once again destroy American cities- go for it. At that point I will say, all of that rage, pain, and anger is justified.

Hope you own a brick and mortar store in a disenfranchised neighborhood. Get the plywood ready.
