We just put an offer in on a house that has baseboard oil heat, not forced air. Is it possible to have a CAC unit installed? Converting to gas isn't an option bc it's in a culdesac that does not allow any gas lines. TIA!

Do they have gas or oil?
All the people that we know with CAC have gas.
Just wondering if CAC is compatible with oil... My DH doesn't seem to think so.

One has nothing to do with the other. In order to put in CAC you need ducts. If there aren't any ducts they would have to be installed. If the house has an attic the ducts can be installed there for the 2nd floor. For the main floor they can be installed in the basement or you can use a ductless system.

Ok thank you! So what powers the CAC, the oil? Sorry I'm just completely oblivious to things like this, which I'm sure you've noticed!

The house we're looking to buy is a high ranch with 3 heating zones and the sellers literally have a window AC unit in every room bc there are so many separate rooms. We're trying to estimate what our monthly costs will be in the summer months and if CAC is possible/makes sense.

We have oil heat and CAC. The a/c condenser is run off electricity not oil or gas.

Yes, the heating system is usually totally separate, as others have said.

You may be getting confused only because sometimes people who have a forced hot air system (doesn't matter if it's oil or gas) use the same ductwork for heat and CAC. It's not always ideal because hot air rises, so the heat vents are usually placed low on the walls, and cold air sinks, so ideally central air vents are in the ceilings or higher up. But it works.

A lot of times if you see a home on the market with forced air heat, the seller or listing agent will comment on how easy (and how much less expensive) it will be to install CAC because there is existing ductwork.

CAC runs off electricity, but newer systems are very energy efficient and not that costly to run.

ETA - It shouldn't be an issue to install ducts in a high ranch (from a logistics standpoint). The only houses that can sometimes be an issue are capes or levitts... CAC is usually only on the first level of those homes because it's difficult to put in ducts upstairs.

Hope this helps!

Yes, we did it. You just have to have CAC and all new ductwork installed.

yes we installed ducts in our high ranch when we redid it

originally we were going to keep baseboard heat even when we were adding the vents- the baseboards were originally run off oil - but when we converted we decided to just use one system and one control panel

for the high ranch - the attic great for installing the ac upstairs - down stairs is much harder- but it can be done - we vaulted the upstairs main area - we took out the walls and opened it up and then we installed a double vault so that we still had a channel down the center for duct work
