Re: Is it rude to ask a neighbor not to let their dog on my lawn

Not it was not rude.

I had someone walk their big dog by my house. The next day I had an 18 inch circle of died grass. NICE!!! I had reseeded too for the season. I had to water the area for a while then reseed. What a PITA!

So no... not rude!

in my neighborhood, we dont have any sidewalks... so there is no "public" grass area for my dog to pee/poop when i take him for a walk & he wont go to the bathroom in the street

i have no choice but to have him pee/poop on people's lawns -- i ALWAYS clean up after him & i make sure he does it on the edge of the lawn

i have had one person tell me to not let my dog pee on their lawn and i say, im sorry, but my dog wont pee in the street and i make sure he does it on the very edge of the lawn

It's kind of your responsibilty to train your dog NOT to do those things... if you don't let him release on the lawn, he'll have no choice but to do it in the street. It's not your property and it ruins people's lawns....

ive tried to get him to pee in the street and he wont... the only time he will pee in the street is when there is a lot of snow on the ground

i agree thats its not my property and while it may ruin people's lawns... am i not suppossed to take my dog for a walk? my dog is very wierd with certain things that i cant "train" him to do otherwise... like when we play catch, he will NEVER run after the ball after it hits something and comes flying back at him.. am i suppossed to "train" him to not be scared of the ball? no thats just the way he is... and after he has just had a swim, he wont walk into an area that is mostly dirt... am i suppossed to "train" him to walk through the dirt even if hes wet? not really

i dont know what the answer is but i just wanted to give another side of the story... while i understand people get mad & i think that if i was letting my dog walk in the middle of someones yard, that would be wrong, but i pull him to the very edge b/c he just wont pee in the street

Honestly, it's nobody's fault if your dog won't pee in the street. Why ruin other people's lawn?

What if a neighbor has a dog/cat that won't pee unless it's on your front door. And they tell you that's the only place they will pee. See what I mean?

I do all the landscaping at my house. I spend hours mowing, weeding, etc... I would be very upset if someone would act that laid back. Of course, they do. It's not them who have to deal with the mess it leaves afterward.

And while someone think it's just their dog, it's not. It's the other dog who pees on top of another male pee to mark their territory too. We don't live in a pee free for all World. Animals are to be leashed.

I have 2 dogs. You bet I don't let them pee on someone else lawn.

Isn't it all about training though? We train our dogs to go outside so training them to go on our own property is the same thing. Dogs pee all over to mark their territory. My dog's territory is our backyard. There may be neighborhoods that don't care, but for those like myself, I pay a good deal of money for my landscaping and I don't want it ruined by another animals urine.

I have three dogs and I would never let them "go" on someone's lawn. But, sometimes, they lift their legs on the leash and pee on a bush or something that is bordering the property....does this count? I don't want anyone thinking I'm rude.

I would never, ever, ever let my dogs do their business on someone's lawn. It kills the grass and their kids may crawl on the lawn for all I know.... Damn entitlement - it's sickening.

I think it's rude for the owner to let their dog pee or poop on someone else's lawn - not rude of you to ask them to stop it.

Re: Is it rude to ask a neighbor not to let their dog on my lawn

I asked this question a while back, maybe even before we had a dog ourselves. It hadn't occurred to me before honestly, that people would get that upset, until I had my own home.

So we did train our dog(s) to relieve themselves in our backyard. It took a while and there were very specific things we did, tools we used like new commands and positive reinforcement. It took a lot of patience.

Once they relieve themselves, then we walk. When you have a male dog, they are biologically likely to sniff constantly and mark, and there is nothing you can do about that. It's nature. However, since we've already had him do his business in the backyard, there isn't much left, if anything. So even if he's lifting his leg, there's really not enough coming out to cause a problem. I could understand if people got upset to see it, and I'm always prepared to tell them that he's "dry" Chat Icon but he keeps trying.

I know other dogs relieve themselves on the first 10 feet of my property, which technically is owned by my town and not me, and I don't care. I don't garden that close to the curb and I haven't noticed any significant change in the grass down there. I think people focus too much on perfect lawns too much anyway. Chat Icon

I've read that the chemicals in urine that cause problems for grass can be all but eliminated if the person walking the dog brings a bottle of water with them and flushes the area immediately. Then the chemicals are dispersed into the ground below, and doesn't burn the roots.

Anyone who read my thread in the Pets board a few weeks ago knows where I stand on the poop situation, so I'm not going into that again! Chat Icon

Thank you all for the input. I don't have a dog & won't until the kids are old enough to help...but from what other dog owners have told me; when I do get a dog I plan to train them to use our backyard and then we go for walks.Chat Icon

I don't think it is rude at all.
It doesn't matter that it is the edge or not. Your property not theirs. If the same person and/or dog was doing that at my house, I would be annoyed too.

I should also mention I have a dog. I would not let it do that to someones yard daily, it is rude. If they are walking the dog to get out energy that is fine, walk it around their own yard and have it go to the bathroom there, before continuing on the walk. I do that with my dog.

you could at least have the balls to quote me if you are going to respond in reference to my post

and like i said, no matter how long i let my dog out in MY yard, he may pee on a walk... i cant predict that, nor can i help it... i take him for long walks on the weekend

My bad!!! I am quoting you now- Feel better?

I have a question in regards to the "lawn" - I live in Queens and we have our front lawn and then more grass in between the sidewalk and the street. When I walk my dog, he does go to the bathroom there (the grass near the street) but I would never let him go on someone's lawn in front of their house. Am I terrible for letting him do this? I always clean up.

Now that I didn't mistakenly forget to hit quote (as I did earlier in response to this thread) Chat Icon I would like to say that I agree with you both.
I think it is a matter of training and yes moving the dog so it does not ruin someone else property.
I also agree with some one else that mentioned marking territory- make if a dog won't go in it's own yard it is marking other territory Chat Icon

Where I live in Nassau, we have our lawn, then sidewalk then that piece of grass between the curb and the sidewalk. We have a tree on our piece and just further down a telephone pole that is part on our property and part on our neighbors. Dogs pee on both and this doesn't bother me. I guess the tree can take it? Chat Icon It's the yellow grass that bothers me.

I never really cared about the pee, but we don't have a landscaper and our grass doesn't look so great, anyway. But, my question is- are we talking about that area of grass between the sidewalk and the street, or the actual lawn that leads up to the house? We do our best to keep our dog on that part of grass that's between the sidewalk and the street and so does everyone else. Sometimes she'll sneak past me and get a few drops in on someone's actual lawn, but we try our best to prevent her from doing that.

IMO, the area between the sidewalk and the road is "free game" for everyone, as long as they pick up the poop.

This was what I was going to post as well; when our dog was a puppy she would just kind of go anywhere the feeling struck Chat Icon. I took her for walks with like 6 baggies and a GIGANTOR bottle of water to "flush" any urine she left on ANYONE'S property. I live in queens so we do have sidewalks and (mostly) fenced front lawns but I really think it's the HEIGHT of arrogance to let your dog pee/poop "whereever". It's just flat out rude and if I caught someone in the act I'd *definitely* tell them to move it along.
That dog CAN BE TRAINED to eliminate appropriately - IF the owner is willing to invest the time an implement correct strategies. She will not let her bladder explode, let's be realistic.
So frankly this is an owner issue NOT a doggie issue IMHO. And if you're unwilling to retrain doggie, at the VERY LEAST bring a water bottle with you to try to minimalize the damage to neighbors' lawns as best you can.

Re: Is it rude to ask a neighbor not to let their dog on my lawn

i don't think it's rude necessarily... it's your lawn & you have the right to ask it to be respected however you wish.
i have 2 small dogs and when i walk them, i do let them on the edge of lawns in certain areas. mostly where there is a telephone pole or tree (quinn likes to lift his leg even if nothing comes out) or on long stretches in between houses or around bends where it's not RIGHT in front of their house/walkway persay. i try to be respectful of people's lawns, as a homeowner myself who pays for landscaping - but at the same time - i think my dogs deserve to smell some grass when we take a walk. we don't have sidewalks and it's not as though i walk them on people's lawns the whole way, or right in the middle. they are generally content staying in the street, but they have certain areas where they like to sniff around and i let them. sometimes they tinkle, sometimes they don't. between the 2 of them, i have about 22lbs of dog, and i take the same routes day in and day out - i never notice patches of dead grass. if they go to poop, i let them - i do not pull them in the street. i think it's mean. would i want to be ripped off the toilet in the middle of going? Chat Icon to my dogs, we are outside, and they don't think they are misbehaving by going to the bathroom. maybe it is my "job" to train them to go in the street - as some posters mentioned - but i have enough i try to train them to do. i have no problem keeping a plastic bag and a paper towel with me and picking up their poop when they go. which i ALWAYS do. because i would be livid, if someone left that on my lawn, and would absolutely say something.
i think everyone has different things that bother them and that's fine... i could care less if someone's dog pees at the edge of our lawn... and if they go #2, so be it, just make sure you clean it up! however once, i watched some lady walk her dog through our circular flower bed around our tree at the edge of our lawn. i could have pummeled her and if i see her near my property again, there will be problems!Chat Icon if someone asked me not to let my dogs go on their lawn, i would absolutely respect that and stay away. i would have to. it's never happened to me... i think i too, live in a dog friendly area for the most part. to each their own, how they handle themselves and situations. as long as you do it respectfully. i think i act respectfully. some of you may not agree. it's what makes the world go round, agree to disagree i suppose!

Some neighborhoods don't have sidewalks so they don't have that grass you're referring to as "free game" but is still part of the homeowners property, as is the sidewalk.

Re: Is it rude to ask a neighbor not to let their dog on my lawn

OP- definitely NOT rude to have asked the person to not let their dog go on your lawn. It is your personal property, and not your problem if their dog is not trained.

I am a major dog lover, but they can absolutely be trained and at the very least, the person that has control of the leash can keep them off the lawn to prevent desire to eliminate/mark.

Edit: typo

I never really cared about the pee, but we don't have a landscaper and our grass doesn't look so great, anyway. But, my question is- are we talking about that area of grass between the sidewalk and the street, or the actual lawn that leads up to the house? We do our best to keep our dog on that part of grass that's between the sidewalk and the street and so does everyone else. Sometimes she'll sneak past me and get a few drops in on someone's actual lawn, but we try our best to prevent her from doing that.

Yes, that grass is definitely not 'free game', it is still part of the homeowner's property. I have a nice stretch of this and it is where I find poop at least once a week so sorry if I sound guarded.

I do not own a home but I was under the impression that the curb grass is not owned by the home owner, but the home owner must maintain it. I live in SI, so maybe that is the difference, possibly I don't know.

I do let my pups go on the curb grass as does everyone else in the many neighborhoods around here. I would never let them go on the front lawn. Poop is ALWAYS picked up. I never had an issue with anyone.

in my neighborhood, we dont have any sidewalks... so there is no "public" grass area for my dog to pee/poop when i take him for a walk & he wont go to the bathroom in the street

i have no choice but to have him pee/poop on people's lawns -- i ALWAYS clean up after him & i make sure he does it on the edge of the lawn

i have had one person tell me to not let my dog pee on their lawn and i say, im sorry, but my dog wont pee in the street and i make sure he does it on the very edge of the lawn

i am going to be perfectly honest. if you had your dog do that on my lawn i would go ballistic. a lot of time and money is spent on my lawn and i don't want it turning brown because of dog pee.

and if i saw it happen more than once i would be taking pictures and calling the town to file a complaint. there is no public lawn on my street either.

my son and i walk around barefoot around our yard whenever it is warm and i would be beyond p issed (no pun intended) if there was dog pee on it.

it is my property. private property that i pay taxes on and own. i don't want anyone's dog peeing on my lawn or walking on my driveway or property.
