I will not give my dog rawhide but I know a lot of people who do. It can be very difficult to digest among other things.

Yes, very bad! I do not give it to the dogs.

Found this online.

Are there risks associated with rawhide dog treats? Given the amount of rawhide consumed by dogs each year, the risks are relatively small. Still, risks can be serious, so don’t ignore them. Weigh the risks and benefits of giving rawhides based upon your dog's chewing needs and behaviors. These are the most common rawhide risks:

Contamination. As with pet toys, rawhide chews can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals. And, as with other pet (or human) foods, Salmonella or E. coli contamination are possible. Even humans can be at risk when coming into contact with these bacteria on rawhide treats. Digestive irritation. Some dogs are simply sensitive or allergic to rawhide or other substances used in their manufacture. This can cause problems, including diarrhea.

Choking or blockages. Rawhide bones and other edible chews can pose a choking and blockage risk. In fact, this is a much bigger risk than contamination or digestive irritation. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Sometimes a vet can remove these pieces fairly easily through the throat. But sometimes open surgery is needed to remove them. If it isn’t resolved, a blockage can lead to death.

I stopped giving Shammy rawhide bones. He was fine with them at first but then small pieces would start getting caught in his throat. He would make this horrible choking sound and then throw up (I know TMI) until he got it out. It happened 2 times and I stopped giving them to him. Every now and then DH will buy him one but we watch him to make sure he only chews on it. If we see him going to tear a piece off we take it away. I still dont like it though.

What he does love and doesnt splinter are deer or elk antlers. They are all natural and no deers or elks are harmed to get them. They shed them i think once a year

I give my dogs rawhide bones. They love them and I've never had any issues with E Coli for any of my many, many dogs growing up.

I do, however, take the bones away when they start to splinter and pieces break off. Choking is really my only concern though.

I also give my dogs rawhide bones on occasion and have never had an issue.

But we do mostly give them the beef knuckle bones - which they love... But like with the rawhide.. we watch them carefully.

I had no idea they were bad... my dog doesn't get them often, and we tend to go with small ones, but she never had a problem with them. Interesting...

Re: is it true that rawhide is bad for dogs?

Aside from the digestion issues with rawhide, I think the latest info is that most of the raw hides and other treats are coming from China (think toxic chemicals, etc.) We like to give our dog the jerky type or dried meat treats and I've only found a couple that are made in the USA. I saw one today from the AKC, sweat potato and chicken, made in China but the best " not for human consumption." Why the eff would I give it to my dog?

My vet also warned that raw hide can cause intestinal perforation if swallowed- Needless to say I NEVER give it to him.

Re: is it true that rawhide is bad for dogs?

rawhide is horrible, it even swells up in their mouth. My lab is a very large dog and a hard biter. I cannot give knuckle bones or any bone from a pet shop. If a piece comes off he can choke, he has broken them off in the past and has thrown up the pieces. I was advised years ago never to give rawhide. I buy them large beef marrow bones from the butcher. They r cheaper then bones and they spend hours trying to get the marrow out. He has never gotten a large piece off. I take them away after they r done with it.

I also only give my dog Elk bones. They are NOT cheep, but he LOVES them.

As a treat, we give him cow esophagus (sp). They are like 3 bucks, all natural, and DONT SMELL.

Nasty nasty bully sticks are banned in my house.
