I've been working on a COVID unit for three weeks...
..and I never thought I would miss my Oncology floor this much.
I've been floated several times in the last few weeks. I work in a large hospital near Annapolis, MD. We are not at our peak yet with this virus. Tents have been created and we are preparing for 200 more patients than the hospital is equipped for.
All I can say is that I love being a nurse and will do anything to help others. But this is unlike anything I ever could have imagined. The way patients are declining so rapidly. The terror you see in their eyes when it literally hurts to take a shallow breath.
This isn't like the flu. It's something so different than most of us have seen, and its torture for the families who cannot be with their loved ones.
MANY are recovering so that is always a positive thing. But there are many who aren't, and I am so tense during my 13 hour shift I find that when I go home and shower I cry almost every time. My face hurts. My legs hurt. I sweat in my PPE and I started getting pressure injuries behind my ears from the n95. I finally wised up and started putting mepilex pieces to protect the area.
I'm not 100% sure the reason I'm posting, lol. I just wanted I guess to say please be patient with social distancing. I hope this nightmare ends soon. Try to enjoy time with your families. It's a weird time and surreal feeling but the best we can all do right now is practice patience.
Thanks for reading.

Thank you for sharing that. Those of us who are only experiencing this through news stories need to hear from real people dealing with this to stay in check. God bless you. I hope you stay safe and well. Our country needs you. You and your colleagues are the true heroes of this disaster and we would be lost without you.

Thank you for all you do! Stay safe!
I saw a post on FB that some healthcare workers are using headbands or bandanas on their heads with buttons sewn on to keep the pressure from the elastic off their ears. After their long shifts they're in a lot of pain
I can't post a pic but here's a link for an idea. headband

Check out this Facebook group: Suffolk County Creators of Coviid19 Medical Supplies I've printed over 800 ear saver bands so far, and I'm giving them out as fast as I can print them. There are people all over making all types of bands, as well as other supplies to help essential employees.

Yes. I'm 3d printing them. Others are crocheting them, others are sewing them out of fabric, etc. I can't sew or crochet, but I have a printer, so we're all helping however we can.

Thank you for sharing this. I wish more people on the front lines would speak out about what they are dealing with. DHs close family member has it now and has spent 4 weeks in the hospital and still isn’t doing well. Even for those “recovering” the road could be long.
Thank you for being our health care hero!!!

Thank you for your hard work. I can’t imagine how difficult it is. I have a few extended family members who are working as nurses, and a niece who is a medical resident, all who say how difficult this is. Hang in there. Your work is truly appreciated.

Thank you for posting this. My husband is a nurse and I had no idea his ears hurt from his mask. I mentioned this post to him and he made an ear band with supplies at home. His coworker has an ulcer on her nose from the front of the mask.
