IVF protocols for a blocked tube?
One of my friends just found out that she has a blocked tube and has about a 1% chance of conceiving naturally. She is with Dr. Palter. Can anyone give me some insight as to what her protocol may be? Will she still need to go on BCP?
Thanks

I'd think she still needs bcp before IVF. Isn't the point of bcp to keep the ovaries "quiet"?
Lots of luck to her!

Re: IVF protocols for a blocked tube?
The way it was explained to me by my RE is that the BCP increases the response to stimming. I know there are some REs that don't agree with that. As far as if your friend will need BCP...it would be hard to say bc every patient is different and every RE is slightly different in their protocols. I will say that I know someone who used Dr Palter and she started her IVF protocol with BCP.
Best of Luck to your friend!! Oh, and I am missing a tube too.
Found this: Q: Why do you use birth control pills before an IVF cycle? A: Birth control pills are often used before an IVF cycle to accomplish two purposes: 1) the pill allows a patient and physician to schedule the start of the IVF cycle at a time that best fits everyone's schedule, and 2) the pill may allow for a more even recruitment or growth of follicles (each follicle contains an egg) during the stimulation of egg production during the IVF cycle. Your physician will determine if using the pill before starting the IVF cycle is the best choice for you.

I have never been on BCP before stimming so I think it varies by doctor. .

IVF protocols for a blocked tube?
I was on BC for only 5 days. Now I am on my 2nd day of Estrace. I was on the BC so my cycle could align with my REs schedule for IVFs in September.

Re: IVF protocols for a blocked tube?
I'm not sure how much the tube will affect the actual IVF protocol so much as it affects the decision to go for IVF sooner than later since IUIs won't work half the time. The actual medication protocol will depend on her ovaries as gauged by hormone levels (FSH, AMH, baseline day-3 bloods, etc.)
As far as suppression, every doctor has their pet protocols. For otherwise fertile women (with blocked tubes) they will have concerns about OHSS and go for a milder stimulation, which tells me long Lupron or BCP into antagonist (ganirelix) but I think that's doctor's preference.
Good luck to your friend!
