Re: Jean Paul Gaultier Responds to 0-sized Models
Posted by Redhead
well i am not going to bother reading the thread...
My Opinion...Simple and yet to the point
If having anorexic models walk down the runway is a bad thing
i would say equally bad is having obese woman do the same
I think if we are talking STRICTLY FOR HEATH REASONS and not for taste, then I'd agree.
If the industry is claiming that a size 0 impresses an unhealthy body image onto younger members of society, then could we not say the same for someone who is (dangerously) obese? Regardless of the reason for any individuals' shape, health or fitness level, but strictly because the claim is here, that these models DO impress a certain unhealthy standard onto society as a whole?
BTW, obesity does not come with a size. You can be a very fit "plus sized model", but you can be an unfit & unhealthy size 6. It is not to say that just because someone is fit that they are not considered "plus-sized"
ALSO: Regardless of what you think of JPGs style (which is not the topic here) you have to admit that the statement is a strong one. it might offend some, it might make some applaud, however WE ARE ALL TALKING ABOUT IT, and that was the point.
AND: As for the model, no one can know her motives, her feeling, her desire to do this, so please lets not fall into the same cr@p that happened on another thread where we take one look of one moment in a runways how & all of a sudden we all know what she is thinking/feeling etc. And again, not the purpose of the OP. Not that I don't mind a good debate, but those comments are unfair & they take away from the original point.

I am applauding that it is equally bad to have an unhealthy image, no matter what end of the spectrum is represented.

You're applauding statements that were unrelated to the topic at hand.
Imagine if we all jumped into a thread and just started stating our opinions with out reading the topic being discussed.

Thoughts?
SO THAT WAS MY THOUGHT...
and quite relevant

Re: Jean Paul Gaultier Responds to 0-sized Models
Jen I am so glad you brought this topic back because I actually have something else to say... go figure
Just when I thought this issue would die out, I happened upon this article in the New York Post while getting my hair done today.
John Paul Gaultier
And the picture they used:
Which is far different from the picture in the original post. There is also, in the paper, a picture of a thin model (I assume from the same show)
Here I am thinking, "Great, she looks happy and confident. Good for her!" This was until I read the article:
----- October 5, 2006 -- Talk about a weighty argument.
Fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier made his feelings known about efforts afoot in Europe to limit waif-like women on the runway - by sending a massive model down the catwalk as a form of protest.
Gaultier pulled the huge stunt during his 30th-anniversary show at the Paris Fashion Week on Tuesday, according to the Daily Mail of London.
The woman, whom the paper estimated as a size 20, donned a revealing boudoir outfit, featuring a barrel-sized corset and enough lace to outfit the entire Moulin Rouge.
The decision to let the heavyweight fashion plate strut her stuff alongside the wafer-thin models comes just weeks after Madrid banned skeletal women from its Fashion Week. ------ Ok so I put two lines in bold which pretty much confirms, at least in my mind, that this woman was not in fact used for her obvious beauty in the plus size community, but to make a statement that "Nobody tells JPG what to do. SO THERE!" This is not something to applaud.
However, I dont know whether I am disgusted more by the exploitation of this model for JPGs own purposes or by the writer who gives consistent and insulting jabs to this model throughout the article as well as the caption under the picture. This is all rather sad.

Yeah, now that I think about it, I agree. But then again, wasnt he responsible for putting the cones on Madonna's boobs?

Re: Jean Paul Gaultier Responds to 0-sized Models
as a follower of fashion and a grad of FIT
the point of runway models in to NOT OVER POWER THE CLOTHES
the designers like skinny girls b/c they don't have boobs, butts and hips to get in the way of there designs
they are suppose to be human hangers
they are NOT suppose to be representitives of all woman- let magazines do that in print
these shows are for buyers( store buyers and rich women) to see the clothes, publicity and nothing else
