Jewish girls on Team Pink-Baby Naming Question
Does your rabbi come up with a name close to DD's real name or do you chose to name the child? DD's first name is going to be after my great aunt and her middle name after DH's maternal grandfather.
DH thinks the rabbi will look it up in a book. I thought we pick it.
Also, about when do you do the baby naming? We aren't going to have a big party, because I am having a shower, but I was thinking a little party. We can wait, right? Or can we have her named at the temple, do the kiddush and have a party a little while after?

Re: Jewish girls on Team Pink-Baby Naming Question
We came up with the name. We knew who we wanted her hebrew name to be after.
for the record the hebrew names and the english names do not have to be after the same person/people. DD is named after 4 people. Her english name is after my great, great uncle and his wife. Her hebrew name (Tovah Rivka) is named after DH's grandmother and her sister.
We didn't do a traditional baby naming. Technically, we did. Since DD was born in February, I was NOT going to bring her to Shul and have a party with lots of people coming near her. So, the week after DD was born. DH went to shul on a morning they took the Torah out and officially named her. When DD was 2.5 months old we had a Simcha Bat to "welcome" her and to reveal her name to everyone. We actually had a huge Kiddish/Brunch (150 people - but that was my IL's doing).
You can most definately do it in Shul and then have a small kiddish afterwards.

That is what I am thinking, because my FIL is the cantor at his temple and he is retiring next December, so this is the last family thing. We live in Florida currently and I don't want to put her on a plane until at least 2 months!

Re: Jewish girls on Team Pink-Baby Naming Question
I picked a name-- and in fact changed the name after she was born since we lost a relative when she was less than 3 months old.
She is now 8 1/2 months and I still haven't officially named her.
I was team green-- so I didn't make any plans beforehand.
I might just have my MIL go to the temple and do it, but I am thinking I will bypass the party-- maybe say a little something at her 1st bday. I honestly cannot deal with planning a party now, picking a location and paying for it.

Re: Jewish girls on Team Pink-Baby Naming Question
We did a Babynaming at my Temple on a Friday night. My husband and I hosted the Kiddush - we brought in fruit platters and a cake. Then the next night we took our immediate family out for a nice dinner to celebrate. The Rabbi gave me a few choices based on her english first and middle name and we chose from there.

Thanks ladies! I think we are going to sit down with FIL to help us. We really just wanted to do a kiddush and a small party. I just didn't want to go through the craziness of a big to-do.

Re: Jewish girls on Team Pink-Baby Naming Question
DD is not named after anyone. We looked at Hebrew names that started with the same first letter of her first name..and picked the one that had the most meaning for us..her Hebrew name means "miracle".
We had her babynaming when she was about 3.5 months old...we live in a townhome community and had it in our clubhouse, where the rabbi came and performed the brief ceremony. We had about 35 - 40 people and brought in bagels, lox, etc.

Re: Jewish girls on Team Pink-Baby Naming Question
Well, DDs name is a biblical name for her first name and an American name for her middle name. For her Hebrew name we just used the same first name, but for the second we told the Rabbi this is her English name and what would the Hebrew transliteration be. We ended up going with the same Hebrew name as the person she is named after. Yes, the rabbi looked it up in a book. So you are both right.
ETA: DH, my parents and my inlaws went to the temple without DD and I to have an aliah and have DD named a week after we came home from the hospital. DDs "welcome to the world" party is in a couple of weeks. I think we will have about 50 people at my parents house for bagels and lox. My parent's rabbi will say a blessing over DD.
