Jewish Girls or those who didn't have showers
So, a registry for us is a little different, no?
Since anything we'll need right away we'll need to purchase ourselves since the gifts don't get sent until after the baby is born.
I assume everyone gets the bare minimum--- so, WHAT is the bare minimum?
I assume some bottles, obviously the layette (whatever that is, still not sure), diapers, etc. What did everyone else do?

Ugh, you're talking to an insanely anal jewish girl here.... We're ordering the furniture and bedding and giving the green light for delivery of the furniture when I go into the hospital but for the time being we're getting a bassinet for the baby's first few days...bottles, car seat, layette, bundle me since I'm due in December. I have a full on registry and anything being bought is being delivered to my in laws or parents....my mom just bought one of the pack n plays bc the pattern was one we loved and havne't seen anywhere else, so things here and there we're picking up.
I'm trying to think of what else we're forgetting...oh yah the stroller..everything that is NEEDED we're keeping at one of the parents or grandparents house.....
hope this helps
Its really making me crazy this entire thing...

Yeah, I don't think I'll be as anal as you... I just know most of the gifts won't come in til the kid gets here.
We'll probably send the gifts to one of our parents ahead of time anyway since we live in an apt-- and I could stand more time without baby clutter.
I'll get furniture delivered though close enough, and I don't mind having the necessities here.

see neither do I, but DH and my mom are extremely superstitious and are freaking out about having anything in the house.....so its one argument I'fm just not having, the store we're ordering furniture and bedding from is very familiar with the whole superstition so they said the way to go is to have someone call them when I go in, but to be honest I was planning on having teh baby in a bassinet in our bedroom the first month anyway, so thats not a big deal....I wish I would be less anal

I am less superstitious than my mom. I am keeping some stuff - just in the garage. I actually asked this question a few weeks ago on Parenting and bookmarked it. Here ya go! http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic.aspx?&P=1&ID=308253

Re: Jewish Girls or those who didn't have showers
my friend Cristie registered for mostly everything
as soon as she had the baby- everyone went on line and bought everything
it was all waiting for her when she got back to her 1 bedroom apartment
good thing she had a baby nurse to help her

Re: Jewish Girls or those who didn't have showers
I had a basinette in the beginning and got everything else that I registered for at DS's bris. The furniture was delivered a few days after I got home. My mom picked up my layette after I delivered since we didn't know the sex anyway. I borrowed my sister's basinette so she brought it while I was still in the hospital.
A layette is basically a collection of the first clothes the baby needs. The basics, if you will. Onesies, nightgowns, PJs, jumpers, bath towels, burpies. Also, the take home outfit is typically included. Sometimes, the bedding is included with that as well.

Re: Jewish Girls or those who didn't have showers
We registered for everything. As things came in, my parents took it to their place. I had the crib, dresser/changing station and glider delivered 2 weeks b/f my due date. Everything else came afterwards. I felt I was in the clear by then.
My mom picked up the layette while I was in the hospital and washed everything then.
Most of my mom's and grandmother's friends didn't get Shana gifts until her naming.

Re: Jewish Girls or those who didn't have showers
I had a full registry. My awesome friends made me a shower and a lot of what we needed was already purchased. However a nursery will NOT be set up. Like a PP said, our furniture is in and set for delivery as soon as I go into the hospital. Many stores are aware that most Jewish customers will order far enough in advance to make sure the furniture is in but know it wont be delivered until the child is delivered as well. Our layette is also beingh eld at Denny's and is ready for pick up. My sisters will do this and along with the other clothing we have already purchased, will wash it all before I step foot in my home.
As far as any other "must haves", I would say to have bottles and/or breast feeding supplies, diapers and changing supplies and perhaps some bathing supplies. Sure it is nice to have a diaper pail, but I see no reason why you can't throw a stinky diaper in a garbage can for a day or two until you have everything set up.
Personally, and this is my only super anal Jewish superstitious trait, I would make sure that you have a mezzuzah on the door post of the room that the child will be sleeping in as well as a red ribbon tied to the bassinet or crib. It is not a necessity, but more tradition. As soon as we finish painting, the mezzuzah goes on. We have one on almost every room except the bathroom (where they arent supposed to be anyway).
