I kind of disagree. I don't think they are a "cult" at all. They are just religious and follow those practices. That is the beauty of America. Live how you want. The kids look happy to me, the father isn't pimping out his girls and marrying them off at 13. There doesn't seem to be any abuse since the cameras are always around. They just have different beliefs that us and honestly I'd rather see kids court and get to know each other without physical contact before marriage, then watch some other shows where all the kids do is have sex, doing drugs and get knocked up at 16.
I'm sure that there will be one or more kids rebelling and doing a tell all, but that wouldn't surprise me, people rebel from their families all the time regardless of what beliefs they have or how they grew up.
I know I'm kind of naive but I mostly agree. I'd take them as neighbors over all the parents who don't teach their kids any morals or hold them accountable for anything. I've watched most of the series and haven't seen anything about a lot of the teachings mentioned here but I don't really follow anything outside of the show. I'd like to think that once they are married they can establish their own ground rules to some extent.
Agreed.
Do I think they are extreme- YES!
Do I think there's a method to their madness- YES! lol
I actually want to buy the girls' book and use SOME of their points in teaching my daughters (respect for yourself and your body, some modicum of modesty, etc.)

I'm sorry but I find Jim Bob just a little bit, ok a LOT of bit creepy. lol. If my dh was on top of me all day long trying to kiss me, I would tell him to back off. lol. He seems just a little bit too close with his daughters too. He seems like that dirty old man you try and avoid. lol
Right?!?! I'd be like "let's side hug"

I mean, I've heard of other religions banning dancing and making women wear long skirts but I've never heard of this 'side hug' nonsense.
I saw someone do that at a beach in Georgia--but they were wearing normal bathing suits--I was so confused!
I am fascinated by Jana. She is 24 & sort of has a job & is not courting. I guess that's as close to independent as it gets for women in this family.
And someone mentioned the hair & makeup up--I am sure it is encouraged part of their man-catching skills. It's OK to look at faces, just not bodies.

Ive seen orthodox jewish women wear those bathing suits and as for the makeup there is nothing in the bible about that but the the bible does speak about dressing modestly which is what they base their life on. Now, while I think they take it to major extremes there are definitely people who go even more extreme. I mean, those girls may wear skirts but they wear very short sleeves and form fitting clothes. I have orthodox cousins that would consider that very immodest.

It's possible but it's also possible that she got pregnant on the honeymoon. My DD was due 3/17 and I think she was conceived around 6/25 or so. Hope that's not TMI.
If she did get pregnant before her chaperones will be getting FIRED. Or condemned to hell.

Re: jill dugger pregnant!
I often defend the duggers and like them but, this thread made me do some research.
This girl left the quiverfull movement and is blogging about it. She has written blogs about the duggers teachings. It comes from a view of someone who is now atheist and hates that religion so I am sure it's not all accurate. But, it's interesting. link to one of the articles.

Well that certainly was an interesting read. Holey Moley!
So if all the older girls are taking full time care of the little ones, what is Mama Dugger doing all day?

Re: jill dugger pregnant!
If she got pg on her Honeymoon, the due date is Mid March. Makes sense, based on their announcement. Let's wait and see if they give birth to a 9lb."preemie" at the end of Feb.

Agree, the good thing about Good ole 'Merica is that you can raise your kids any damn way you please. So long as they aren't living off the government, or starving/beating their kids they can run naked through fields for all I care. Their kids seem respectful, kind, and full of morals. You can say all you want that if you teach your kids morals they will follow them, it's not always true. Look how many kids were brought up on morals and were pregnant before they were out of high school, or on drugs. Live and let live people!

Except that they are teaching their children to HATE and be hypocrites. And they most certainly do beat their kids. They follow the teachings of ATI, Bill Gothard (whose been accused of sexual abuse of young females working for his nonprofit for decades since he founded the organization), blanket trainings, etc... Those children are taught to be happy or they will suffer the consequences. An unhappy child (or a child who shows any emotion other than cheerfulness) is a direct reflection of their parents and a sign of disrespect. That is why they don't tow the line. The reason all the duggar girls spend so much time primping their hair, and literally nothing else about their little house on the prairie costumes? Because Bill Gothard (the sexual abuser mentioned before) thinks the ideal woman should have long curly hair. Not such an innocent wholesome family after all as they'd like to have us believe.
Also, until they "hit it big" with TLC, book deals, and spewing their hate speech on grand stages full of audiences across the nation - how was one man supporting himself plus wife (who's not ALLOWED to work under the teachings they follow) and all those children? (Has it been confirmed that absolutely no government assistance was used?)

What MC09 is saying is what I read in the links provided in previous posts on this thread. The blogger is a woman who was raised in these teachings, and left.
They even have a song called the "Smile Song" that teaches them that anything other than smiling will not be tolerated. It sounds like this religion borders on a cult like atmosphere.

This is what I was referring to earlier. While they certainly have the freedom to raise their children any way they see fit, I don't have to support it on television or pretend not to be offended by it, because they cloak it under the guise of religion.

Not for nothing, but my father did the same thing to my sister and I. We always had to have a smile on our face. We never were "allowed" to be in a bad mood. If we were not "happy" at the dinner table we had to leave. That was being brought up in an Italian household.

However, that's not really my issue. I think Gothard is a frightening, hateful man who uses religion and his interpretation of conservative values to masquerade as religion. So, as I stated earlier, I'm offended and not the least but interested in the Duggars. I think a lot of what they stand for, modesty and good manners aside, would be difficult for most people to accept, if they really understood the Duggar's religion.
BTW, I do think that since they gained notarity, the Duggars have done their best to publically distance and even deceive the public regarding their real religious beliefs. JMO.

I'm with you 2girlsforme! Peel off that happy, wholesome America facade and they are the scariest kind of people... the kind that hide their hatred behind their religion and try to pass it off as virtuous.
Off the boat Italian here as well... we also were allowed to express our emotions and encouraged to talk about what we were feeling.
