Just got a call from my OB - progesterone is low..anyone experience this??
I went for blood work back on the 27th of Jan...I was 7 wks preg.
They just called now and told me progesterone level is 5, they like it to be 11. So I have to start taking a supplement immediately. From what I have researched, this doesn't look good.
Has anyone else had this experience?? Was the pregnancy successful, or should I be preparing myself for the worst?

I haven't personally had this, but my sister always has low progestrone. She takes supplements, and has had 5 healthy pregnancies.

Honestly I've had both. I MCed even after being put on supps immediately but I'm also 24 weeks PG after having had low progesterone and being put on supps. It's not a foregone conclusion that it's bad. Good luck

Re: Just got a call from my OB - progesterone is low..anyone experience this??
First off, take a deep breath and breathe. The same thing happened to me. I had bloodwork at almost 7 weeks and found out my progesterone was an 8. They wanted it over 15. I immediately freaked out and started googling (not a good idea, by the way becuase of all the horror stories about this). I immediately started progesterone suppositories and did them until I was 12 weeks. The tested my progesterone again 2 weeks later and it was only a 10. I went for sonos every 2 weeks until 12 weeks to make sure all was well with the baby and thank God I am 36 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby boy and all is well. Good luck and do what they tell you to do.

Re: Just got a call from my OB - progesterone is low..anyone experience this??
I was monitored by a RE and my lowest measured Progesterone level was 12.7 He told me that he'd start getting concerned if it was under 10. I think my highest measured Progesterone level was 23.
Don't forget, your Progesterone level will fluctuate throughout the day so the 5 is only a small snapshot in time. There are times throughout the day when it's lower and times throughout the day when it's higher. It's a hormone and hormones fluctuate constantly.
I was never on supplements, my Beta kept doubling all while my Progesterone hovered around 13 for weeks until he released me.
I will be 29w tomorrow!

I have heard of this many times. I also experienced it with this pregnancy. I opted not to take the progesterone but I do not know what my levels were. It was just a personal position. But I know a few that have and had healthy pregnancies. It is out of your hands so decide what is best for you with your doctor. Good Luck

Re: Just got a call from my OB - progesterone is low..anyone experience this??
When I was pregnant with my DD my progesterone was low........not quite as low as yours though. I was at about 10. I was on progesterone suppositories from weeks 5 through 12 of my pregnancy and my DD was born perfectly healthy and I had no complications. I am sure you will be fine. They just have to get you throughh the next few weeks because around week 12 when the placenta takes over you won't have to worry anymore........your body will produce plenty of progesterone.

I had low progesterone when I was pregnant with my son. It was 5 when I was 7 weeks. I started progesterone immediately and I kept doing it until I was 12 weeks. My son is 20 months old now.

Me too...my first pregnancy it was 7 and I mc. This pregnancy it started at 2.6 and everything is looking good at 18 weeks.
ETA: With the first pregnancy, I was put on Prometrium, and with the second I was put on suppositories.

Re: Just got a call from my OB - progesterone is low..anyone experience this??
Thanks ladies...I was really starting to panic when I was researching online...I have since taken your advice and stopped.
I go back to the OB on Wednesday, will have a sono and more blood work. And I start the suppositories tonight. I am trying not to worry and just that everything will be alright.

Re: Just got a call from my OB - progesterone is low..anyone experience this??
I actually just stopped taking the progesterone supplement at 22w. Ive been on it since 6. Ive been getting tested every 3 weeks. It finally got to the level of normal and the dr said to come off it for a week...than get retested (next week) I wouldn't stress it and make sure that your levels are in the normal rate before they take you off. I know my dr kept me on a lot longer than most woman on here.

Re: Just got a call from my OB - progesterone is low..anyone experience this??
I had IVF so its protocol to use intramuscular injections of progesterone. However-I think you should address with your Dr why it took them 15 days to call you and tell you this and provide treatment! Many people have low progesterone and it works out fine. As long as you don't have bleeding or cramping all is probably OK
