Just great.. I got a jury duty standby notice..I have questions...

I am so annoyed. I hardly get called until I get married. I get a questinnaire in the mail over the summer and bam, I get called for January. I am freaking out. I know a lot of you do not mind going, if I do not go to work, I do not get paid at work, if I get paid for jury duty it is a lot less $$ then what I get paid. I have bills to be paid including a student loan. Last time I went the people were really weird. I cannot stand the thought of being questionned and cross questioned. I cannot take stress, I get migraines etc. With that background how long do you go for is it all week when you get called in? What are the chances of being called, I have a low #.What is going to happen when I go? How many days will I serve? What questions do they ask... how can I get out of it when I am questioned, do they ask if you can't serve... sorry for the questions, last time I had a medical note b/c of my stress and bad migraines and dry heaving, sorry if TMI... Can I take my laptop w/ me? Help! I am freaking out here, but want to get it get it overwith. TIA Please do not flame me, I do not handle stress well...

If your anxiety is that bad, you may be able to get a letter from your psychiatrist excusing you....

I am sorry I do not see a psychiatrist, I am not nuts altogether...not that people who see psychiatrists are nuts... I have dealt with a lot of sadness in my life and stress in my life, and do not handle it well. NY state says if you work a medical note will NOT work.

It sounds like you will have to go. It really isn't that bad even if you get called for a case.
As for your comment about being nuts, seeing a psychiatrist for help with something that is negatively impacting your life is something that should be commended not looked down upon.

I agree- therapy is a good thing and should not be looked down upon. I am just so upset- did not mean to sound rough.
I have accepted i have to go, and will get it overwith, hope it is only for 1 day- my # is pretty low, so I am anticipating having to go- just hope it is for one day.

Re: Just great.. I got a jury duty standby notice..I have questions...

No flames here- I feel the same as you.
I have no desire to sit on a jury nor do I have the attention span to really give the case what it deserves.
I'd be day dreaming the whole time

Here's how I managed to get out of it.

You are allowed to postpone one time.
Call the line and postpone it to a holiday week.

I postponed mine till the week of July 4th, but Xmas, New Year's Thanksgiving, any federal holiday will work.
Once you do that, they will send you a new notification to call for the new week you chose over the phone

Usually when it's a holiday week, the case load is a lot less that week because the courts are closed on the holiday. The week I had to call they only called about 500-600 people. My number was in the 1000's and I got out of it. And the best part- even though I never had to go and only call, I am excused for like 6 years now I think.

Now this is obviously not a guarantee, but your odss are better of NOT getting called on a holiday week if you happen to have a high number.

When I had jury duty, I went for one day (a Monday) and did not even get on a jury. The judge simply stamped a card saying I was good for "x" amount of years at the end of the day. That did mean, however, that I sat around the whole day waiting for my number to be called, but it wasn't really that bad.

The back of the notice says you cannot reschedule for a holiday week. Chat Icon

Re: Just great.. I got a jury duty standby notice..I have questions...

Jury duty is ONE day unless you get picked for a jury and you can answer their questions in a way that they won't want to pick you.

Putting it off is just avoiding it....you have to do it sometime and migraines and anxiety is not an excuse unless you are unable to leave you house for the medical condition......since you work you will have a hard time having jury duty excused.

I got called twice. First time I got picked for a case, but the case was settled so we were let go. Went a total of two days.

Second time I got called, went, and right away was shipped over to the criminal court building but I did not get picked for the case since I am in the law field, no one wants meChat Icon

How low is your #??? My number was called and I also didnt want to be there. Not like deathly ill by it but more of an annoyance. I went and I found it ridiculously easy. They keep you in a wait area for about 1.5-2 hrs and then bring you into a room. Its ridiculously simple and if you were me, you would give answers that would logically make them not want you. They give you the evidence and ask if you are openminded to the case...tell them no. they will ask you why and agree with one party wholeheartedly. I got dismissed on my case. I was out by 1. 8-1 for me. looking back, the experience was so easy I think I probably should have stayed. For you...I agree...not getting paid just plain sux!

Re: Just great.. I got a jury duty standby notice..I have questions...

heres the thing.....we ALL have to do it. 90% of us, dont get paid for it unless we use vacation time. Does it suck, absolutely, but its our civic duty and you might as well just get it over with and not have to worry about it for a few years. No one likes jury duty, no one wants to go. It is what it is though, just go and get it over with.

This is right. And if it makes you feel better, remember--no one handles stress well. No one wants stress or inconvenience. That's why it's called stress and not reward or vacation.

Re: Just great.. I got a jury duty standby notice..I have questions...

What happened to just NOT going? I am pretty sure I have done it at least once when I was a freelancer and got paid only when I was at work. Then, when I was on staff, I got called and went because I got paid for going on Jury Duty and figured I sh ould just get it over with. It didn't make it any less annoying but at least I wasn't loosing money. I also ended up going in the summer which I have been repeatedly told is the slowest time in courts. I was there for a day, never got called, got my card stamped and was excused for 4 years.

You can ignore it but be prepared for either a fine or even jail time. Depending on what state you live in you will either get a fine or go to jail because it is against the law to SKIP jury duty.

I thought that your job has to pay you at least for the first 3 days? Chat Icon I think it is only like $60 a day though.

My Mom just did it this past week. They didn't call her # until Thursday. She went in got picked for a jury (motor vehicle accident) they were done in a few hours and that was it.

I've gone twice and never got picked. They just stamp your card and you are excused for like 4 years, I think.

I honestly am not flaming you, but I think you are making a big deal out of nothing.

The chance that you will get picked is slim with the history that you just gave and you put in your one day and get it over with.

And you can't just reschedule for a holiday week, you postpone for 6 months to the day, so it is what it is.

That is what I am hoping for 1 day and overwith, read a book, they will not let you reschedule for a holiday week and it is 6 months to the day I do not want to spend my Birthday on jury duty.
