Just received a baby shower invite and...
A little background:
- The pregnant girl and her DH are throwing the shower for themselves.
- This is their 2nd child. DD is 2 and a half years old.
- They are a military family with no family close so the family will not attend shower. It is a friend/co-worker shower.
- She is Team Green and not finding out gender.
The invite stated the following: We have registered at Wal-Mart but prefer gift cards and money.
Are my hormones making me extremely hateful at 35 weeks OR does anyone else think that is a bit tacky?

Re: Just received a baby shower invite and...
Sounds to me like they are having the shower only to make a quick buck...rather then get the things that they need for baby. I think they may have everything already from their DD 2 years ago... I would feel the same way as you...

Re: Just received a baby shower invite and...
if this wasn't a VERY close friend, that would make me RSVP no. i agree with the PP who said that it seems like they are having the shower to get money. a sprinkle to celebrate the new baby is fine, but openly asking for GCs and money? that's the definition of tacky

Re: Just received a baby shower invite and...
Not close enough to attend to be honest.
I actually asked someone here at work and they said "well, it's the same as someone writing where they are registered on an invite".
I think it is definitely NOT the same. The same would have been: "Registered at Wal-Mart" and NOTHING ELSE!
If I did attend, I'd be sure to get her something other than a GC or CASH!

Re: Just received a baby shower invite and...
Wow! A friend of mine received a baby shower invitation recently that stated: "In lieu of a gift, we prefer money to put towards baby's college fund" .
I just don't know where people get off? I mean, how incredibly tacky to ask for money.
ETA: I would get them a book on etiquette as a gift by the way .

see, i like the idea of this, though it could be worded better.
for my godson, we simply wrote on the invites..registered at Store A, Store B, and T. Rowe Price college fund (acct #)
my godson's father is a financial analyst and really wanted that option on there..I call him Mr. Money as far as I know, no one in our circle/family thought anything amiss about that.
I am not a big "etiquette" person about this stuff, but I think the OP's invite could have been worded better also. it's not about what the recipient prefers but rather how the guests would like to honor the child/couple. worded in that vein, I think it would have been ok.

I think that is so tacky! If you prefer gift cards I think you could just put them on the registry. I would feel the same way you do!

I think the wording used on your godson's makes all the difference though...when you are including a college fund name & account number. It sounds a lot better then saying give us cash for baby's college fund.
My thought is this, I am more than happy to share such special occasions with people and I consider myself to be a very generous person when it comes to gifts, but do NOT tell me what to give or what you 'prefer'. I would 'prefer' not to be in a situation where I get someone a gift and I have to worry that they might not be pleased because it isn't cash. KWIM?

Re: Just received a baby shower invite and...
that is sooo tacky!! we were invited to a shower for twins (and we know the family has very little income) and instead of writing we prefer giftacards, they added it as an item on their registry, which i thought was a more tactful way of going about it

Re: Just received a baby shower invite and...
Incredibly tacky-why don't they just go door to door and ask for donations? There is nothing wrong with putting gift cards on your registry, it is a whole other thing to ask for money and gift cards.

Re: Just received a baby shower invite and...
thats a little nervy.
But I do have a soft spot for military families, being that her husband has decided to fight for our country. Maybe money is tight.
I buy gifts for aquantances anyway when they have a baby. So instead of spending the $25-$30 on an outfit, I would just sned money.

Re: Just received a baby shower invite and...
Well it's probably not the best wording but I would take it that they are a family in need, and probably send them a little something.
