Well it's probably not the best wording but I would take it that they are a family in need, and probably send them a little something.

This was my thought. Without knowing them, it seems so over the top that they must really be in need. If I thought they were really in need, no matter how tacky, I'd give something for the baby because the baby shouldn't suffer because of the parents' lack of etiquette

Wow! A friend of mine received a baby shower invitation recently that stated: "In lieu of a gift, we prefer money to put towards baby's college fund" Chat Icon.

see, i like the idea of this, though it could be worded better.

for my godson, we simply wrote on the invites..registered at Store A, Store B, and T. Rowe Price college fund (acct #)

my godson's father is a financial analyst and really wanted that option on there..I call him Mr. MoneyChat Icon as far as I know, no one in our circle/family thought anything amiss about that.

I am not a big "etiquette" person about this stuff, but I think the OP's invite could have been worded better also. it's not about what the recipient prefers but rather how the guests would like to honor the child/couple. worded in that vein, I think it would have been ok.

I think the T Rowe account is much classier than asking for money if it means the people can actually put the money in the account versus wondering what the parents will do with the cash.

I've seen too many people online comment on how they used the cash to take a babymoon or do home repairs and they pay the money back later.

eeekkk!!

usually on the actual registry people put notes like "gift cards welcome" etc. not on the invite itself.

its not you...its them!

I'm saure I'll be the odd man out-BUT I don't really think its that bad. Like you said-they are a military family, only friends at the shower and maybe they really need money. The guests are spending mon ey on registry items anyway...so whats the difference? The difference is "someone" decided that asking for money is "tacky."

I don't see much difference asking for a gift(eg by having a registry) or asking for money. Lieke Ophelia said-maybe it could have been worded differently

ETA-I am a BTDT Mom and if I knew now what I knew then I would have bought all myt baby items used and saved money for formula, diapers etc..

In my opinion there is a big difference between buying an item for the baby and giving them money to pay the cable bill
