See, i disagree. In suffolk, people buy a house and in time fix it up. In queens, people buy a house, TEAR IT DOWN and build a brand new one that is three times bigger all while parking luxory cars and carrying louis. im talking entire blocks of this. If thats not keeping up, i dontbknow ehat is.
I dont know anyone in queens that has ever done that... ive lived here my whole life.
Howard beach............. yup. Almost everyone I know in HB who owns a big house has done this .

The obvious question everyone seems to be avoiding is....
Is it: Keeping up with the Jones' Keeping up with the Jones's Keeping up with the Joneses
The last one. The first two are possessive. I'm not keeping up with the Jones's dog or the Jones' (many different families of Jones) dogs.

Honestly, yes and no.
I do get jealous of people that seem to "have it all.". People I know irl, no on here. But I don't let it rule my life.
I'm grateful for what we have.

Bayside and Whitestone probably too but those are areas with "wealthier" folks generally speaking of course. In theory those are the Joneses
Beechhurst area of Whitestone definitely. I lived there for a few years in my dad's apartment and now there's a new McMansion practically every time I visit.

Not really. It's impossible to even try here! We live in a high rise with three apts on our floor. To the left the owners not only own their place but an apt in south america and a house on the beach as well. The neighbor to the right owns that place, the one below and several homes out of the city. We are the "poor" neighbors because we only own this place! Crazy!

Yup, definately like that over in Whitestone/Beechhurst.
Everytime DH & I see a "for sale" sign on an older home we make a bet on how fast it will sell and get knocked down and replaced with a McMansion.
The CRAZY part is it's young people who are doing this! How can they afford to knock down and start from scratch and go all out (these houses out do one another like it's going out of style).
DH & I are left and that we can't afford to buy a home in this area and yet left and right new ones are popping up.

Yes, absolutely true. The same trend is popular in Jamaica Estates, Fresh Meadows and Hollis Hills to name a few.

I'm from this area too and I agree! Some of the houses are so fancy They are actually really ugly, you know what I mean? I would take one of them though!
I don't really care about keeping up with the jonses, I'm content with what I have!

Re: "Keeping Up With the Jonses"
I really could care less but my DH has always been one to try and keep up. I don't know if it's just him being macho or the way he was raised. But I think a LOT of people take vacations, etc and put it on their credit cards. They have LV bags and will wind up paying double for it because they charged it. Someone asked online recently, what is the American dream to you? To me it is being able to own a home, pay my bills, have little to no debt, and retire comfortably.

I feel like those places are all faux Queens though. Come to Elmhurst and tell us we're the Joneses. Even Middle Village (where I grew up) which I consider to be... ritzier, there's only one or two houses that were torn down and built back up. It's the exception in my area of Queens, not the norm.
ETA: Not gonna lie, growing up, I always had the mentality that places like Howard Beach or Forest Hills were trying to be LI. No offense to anyone from any of those areas- it's not everyone, just certain houses.

Yep. When I said (much much earlier in this thread) that I felt that LI had more of a KUWTJ mentality than Queens, I wasn't talking about Howard Beach/Forest Hills/etc. I was thinking more along the lines of where I grew up-- a neighborhood similar to Middle Village.

Re: "Keeping Up With the Jonses"
I live in Middle Village and have plenty of friends (including my next door neighbors) who had houses either passed on to them from their parents or grandparents or who bought an old house that needed to be regutted anyway, and it was much cheaper to just knock it down and rebuild it from scratch. I think sometimes it just makes a lot more sense financially to do that. So its not necessarily KUWTJ mentality all the time. Remember, some of these Queens properties are relatively inexpensive and taxes are dirt cheap.
IMO we live within our means. We have a lot of friends that have things handed to them and we have some that work their a$$es off and are pretty well off, and then there are some that struggle. We never try to "match-up" to anyone. We just do our thing and live within our means. And we're happy

I just keep telling myself I'd rather have no debt and go on small vacations. We live nice but not above our means. Most of the Jones' are in hock up to their eyeballs. At the end of the day I can lay my head down on the pillow and know that I owe nobody. That's a great feeling!

There are very rich towns in Suffolk that instead of tearing it down, have it built on huge lots of property by the water etc. We have it out here too!!
