Kids and College - POLL
I just watched the episode of Cougar Town where Courtney Cox's character had to deal with her son going off to college and it made me really sad thinking about my own DS doing that eventually...
Would you want your kids to go away to college? Or are you like me and dreading the thought of your child even going to school in a different city?

I voted state.
I cannot imagine her not being here for one night, let alone a semester

Re: Kids and College - POLL
NY is such a large state, there are so many good colleges out of state that are closer than some in state colleges.
I would really prefer they stay on the eastern seaboard.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
The ONLY thing that would limit my kids' choices would/could be money. I just cannot see myself limiting my child because I want them close to home. I WANT them to be far enough away where I am NOT tempted to stop by for a visit. I feel they deserve the opportunity to have the same college experience I did. It is the transition from childhood into adulthood. My mommy didnt hold my hand. I dont want to hold theirs. They will either rise or fall and deal with the positive or negative consequences of their actions.
I went 5 hours away to my first choice. Had my first choice been further away with a better program, I would have gone there.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
I want them to stay as close to home as possible. I am fully aware that this will probably not happen, but I can dream, can't I?
Besides, if they move out of state how will I stalk them when they go out to the bars?
ETA: They will fully decide where they go. I will not stop them, or persuade them to stay close to home just to be near me.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
Anywhere in the country would be OK with me. I dont want it to be cost prohibitive to go see him or for him to come home on holidays, or just because but I dont want to hold him back either.
So I would be OK with anywhere in the CONTINENTAL US.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
anywhere
As long as I can get there! haha
Specifically I want her to GO AWAY for that first year for sure. Best year of my life at 18. I can't even begin to explain how it taught me so much about myself, my limits, my 'rules' haha its where the beginnings of Ronie Rules came from.. set I still use today.
I am so grateful I had at least that one year. I can't imagine taking that from my child. She needs to learn independence, self confidence and the value of being your own person. I *WILL* send her away even if she wants to stay home.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
College was the best experience ever! I would want my DC to have the same great experience and that includes them choosing where they want to be - not where I would like them to be! I would strongly encourage them to go away!

Anywhere they want. I will absolutely miss them...but I want them to have the most amazing experience, try living in a new and different place, learn a lot, and just enjoy life.

I would prefer for it to be within driving distance. I only hope we are able to offer our children what we had.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
I want my child to have the dorm experience like I did. I was local but I only went home for school vacations. All of it was my choice. The only thing that upsets me is that I've heard that dorms are not the same now b/c students sit in front of their computers so much.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
OK, I answered the poll as where I "want" her to go but I would never tell her that nor would I try to pursuade or prevent her from going anywhere, even another country.

I would prefer the Eastern seaboard, but would let him go anywhere. I doubt he would want me just dropping by, but it would be nice to have the option

Anywhere they want but if I could influence...I'd like them not to stay on Long Island & as long as it was "safe" I'm ok with it. By safe, I was thinknig along the lines of some countries I'd be hesitant to go to.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
Anywhere in the world they want to go I will support them anyway I can.
I have had some amazing experience. I even took off for 3 months when I was 19 and camped across the country, and this was before there was cell service everywhere.
I want them to embrace life. To learn, and grow and be challenged. And if that means they want to go to Tibet etc. for 4 years, then what a wonderful experience for them, and they better take lots of pictures.

Same. Living in the Northeast there are so many good schools here that I would love to say within driving distance. I remember my brother really wanted to go to Stanford, but also got into Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Duke, Brown, and my parents limited him to driving distance. California is just so hard for short vacations like Thanksgiving--you'd never be able to go home.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
Depending on DS ability, I think I would want him to stay closer to us.
I would send my child to ANY State but only if it was to go to Harvard, etc...
I personally don't see a reason to send a child so far away unless they want to go to an outstanding ivy college. And if I had the money, I would have no issue sending my child there.
