Ditto. I went waaaay upstate to college, I wanted to go out of state but it wasn't affordable so SUNY I went, but I wanted awaaaaay from my family. I wanted the independence and I'm so glad I did. Not because I didn't love them, it was just so important for me to grow in that way.
All of my friends went "away" to college too, to be honest the thought of my kids staying close to home to go to school is kind of foreign to me.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
I would want them to stay in the US, just for practical reasons, and to avoid potential issues later on, in case there's an issue with a non-US accredited degree.
I went to SBU, but I stayed on campus. I would *like* it if DC went to a LI school, but my brother went to Harvard and Stanford because that's what he wanted, and it worked out for him, so I wouldn't have a problem with DC going to the west coast.
(Not sure how DW or the bank account may feel at that time, though.... )

Re: Kids and College - POLL
I'd send DS to Mars if he wanted to go to college there. My only issues is, how old will he when he will be ready.
I was academically ready to go to college at 16 (I could have even have been ready at 15), my parents didn't allow, not even to a local one, until i hit 17. I was so angry about it, but respected them.
I was told that they would only allow me to go one in the same city, you know what I did, I didn't apply to any in the city, and only a few in state that were at least 2 hours a way. There were really happy with the school, and at 17 sent me away to college, not too far, but a 2.5 hour drive away.
I was ready to run back to the city by my sophomore year.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
I know it is going to kill me but I would let them go anywhere they want...in fact I would want them to go away to school.
My parents made me stay closer to home (had to be driving distance) because I was an only child and I dont think they knew how to let me go. I dont want to put those same parameters on my DC. Plus I'm banking on some sports scholarships

I answered same country. I can only hope she wants to be close to me, but at the same time, I can only hope she uses the opportunity to have the experiences DH & I never had.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
I think going away to school is an excellent life experience. I wish I had done it.
I would let my child go anywhere, I would encourage an away school.
If they want to go somewhere crazy expensive, they will have to take out student loans. Most people I know have them. It's part of life.

I would be ok with anywhere, but for practicality I would prefer within driving distance. I don't ever want them to not come home for a holiday or long weekend because the airfare is to much.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
Unless there is a specific reason that they "have" to go away to school ( program only offered at a specific college etc..) , then I would most likely send them locally for both financial reasons as well as the fact that I would like to be able to be invlved in their day to day life and continue to supervise...I'm sure this is not the poplular answer, but I'm being honest here- LOL
They are not going to just go away to school to take Liberal Arts and party all night just to be away from home...Saw it happen with some of my own friends.....Not happening

Re: Kids and College - POLL
Anywhere they want.
My parents were SO supportive - I started at NYU and transferred to a state school, was so much happier.
One of my sisters started out of state and again, transferred to a state school and was much happier.
My other sister went all the way to Cali for school and loved it.
My DH's sister never went away and it was the biggest mistake she's made in life so far - she's so dependent on her parents it's ridiculous.
DH never went away to college and he regrets it too.
As long as they call and visit, I just want them to be happy. Life is all about experiences!

Same. I would hate to limit my kids because of my issues with them leaving.
Me too so long as they are responsible enough (and I don't expect an angel but I won't fund all partying and no education across the country). If they show me they can maintain a balance, I will encourage them to make the decision for themselves although my preference would be an away school with a drive of max 5-6 hrs.

Same here, provided the school is a good match for them.
I would rather they go far away to a school that is perfect for them, than to stay close to home to attend a school that is the wrong fit. As a former HS counselor, I saw a kid who stayed close to home to go to a state school with a great reputation that was a terrible experience because it was just too large for her. A lot of the reason she started out there was due to parental pressure. I would rather my DS make the best choice for him, regardless of location, given that we can afford it.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
I would support anywhere they want to go as long as it's for a good reason. Like I wouldn't want her going across the country to a party school just to be far away, KWIM? But if they wanted to go to a good school on the west coast that would benefit them, then sure. I would miss them so far away but I think it's great for independence.
Of course my first choice would be somewhere within driving distance though. I went to school in MD so it was about a 4-5 hour drive and it was perfect. Close enough to come home for a long weeked but not close enough that my parents could come down every weekend!

I chose Anywhere. I think going away to college is a great experience. DH went to Arizona and I went to RI. We both agree we had amazing times and still have lifelong friends from school.

Re: Kids and College - POLL
Anywhere they want to go...no conditions. I am reasonably sure we'll be in a good position to afford college, but even if we can't swing the whole thing, there are always student loans if they have their hearts set on a specific school.
I guess I'll have to wait another oh...12 or 13 years to see what kind of students they are...THAT might be a determining factor, actually. If they are educational deadbeats, I'm pretty sure if they want to attend Hawaii State or something, THEY can pay for it.
Otherwise, I sort of hope they go somewhere in Boston, because *I* LOVE Boston.
(Oh and my DH and I both stayed home and both of us are really intelligent...and independent! So that's fine too!)

Re: Kids and College - POLL
Right now? I want them as close to home as possible. However, I want them to have a good college experience and understand the desire to board at school so within 3-4 hours would be ideal FOR ME.
Of course, I would never limit them, it's there choice and no matter where they go, if they board away I'll send them weekly care packages because I couldn't get enough care packages when I was in school.
When they are crazy teenagers I will probably be happy to pack them off to timbuktoo.
