Kids sleeping on a different floor?
For those of you who live in a house with bedrooms on different floors (i.e. a cape). At what age, if any, would you think its ok for your child to sleep on a different floor than you.?

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
I think I would be comfortable now having my 3-yr old sleep upstair, and have the master on the first floor. I don't think I would be comfortable we me upstairs, and kids downstairs ever.

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
I'm not a fan of being on different floors. We were house hunting recently, and that was something that caused us to pass on a few great houses.
But to answer yoru question: I would need the kids upstairs (and us on the first level) and they'd need to be 5yrs+.
The idea of them being on the first floor with access to exterior doors - for them to get out, or someone to get in, freaks me out too much. Even when they're older/teens - I don't want them to be able to easily sneak out without me knowing about it.

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
Like I said in your other thread, in both of my houses the kids were upstairs and I was downstairs.. I LOVED it.. The kids go to bed way earlier than me andI liked that I could roam around freely without disrupting the kids at night

that is how it is at my house-both kids are upstairs we are downstairs. the house i live in is really small so it doesn't feel weird but like this poster says i do love that after they go to bed around 7 or so the house is totally mine in a way without me worrying about tip-toeing around their rooms. i never thought i'd like it, but i really do.

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
Once DD moves out of our bedroom, she will have to be upstairs. That's where all the bedrooms other than the master are. I imagine that will be happening sometime around 9-months (since she's 6 months now and we have no intention of moving her away quite yet).
I do live OOS, though. I don't know if that makes a difference. Although I did insist on an alarm system despite our being somewhere "safe" now.

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
DS is up and we are down. I don't love it, but its the only way in our house. We are directly below him...have smoke detectors and CO detectors on each floor, fully alarmed and we have a video monitor. I like that I don't have to worry about being super quiet when he is sleeping b/c he is on the second floor, but it is always in the back of my head if there were to ever be an emergency what would I do and how would I get up there? (I mean...I will do ANYTHING that I have to...I am just doing my own pre freak-out checklist). Thankfully, (well...I mean this somewhat sarcastically) we have a rather small house. So it never seems like he is that far away.
I do however worry about when he gets old enough to sleep in a regular bed and getting up during the night and going down the stairs....ok. I am starting to freak myself out....

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
Before the house reno, DS was sleeping upstairs and we were downstairs from day 1. We had the sound monitor, so we heard him better on the other floor than if he was on the same floor without a monitor, so we weren't worried about it.
It also allowed us to sleep better, and for him to sleep better, since we weren't disturbing each other, unless he was crying for something in the middle of the night.
After the reno, we're all upstairs, but on opposite ends of the house, so it's almost like we're on different floors.

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
I have an expanded ranch. The MB bedroom is on the first floor as is my DDs room. We then have two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. DS room is upstairs. He's been there since day 1.
I never thought it to be an issue being on different floors.

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
We have a farm ranch. The master is downstairs and there are 2 other rooms that we do not use as bedrooms, the kids are up stairs with their own bathroom.
I love it. The best decision we have made. when they get much older, they will love it too and we will not have to switch rooms.
I never thought it was a problem.

Re: Kids sleeping on a different floor?
My 19 month old sleeps downstairs and our room and our 4 week olds rooms are upstairs. The baby will move downstairs when he moves out of the crib.
