What are some things (examples) do the schools expect kindergarten children to know??

When they start and by the time the year is over?

I taught K for almost 4 years. We'd like the kids to know basic things like colors, shapes, etc. They should be able to identify some letters and maybe some sounds. If not, no biggie! By the end of K, they should know all letters, all sounds, recognize 20 sight words and have beginning reading behaviors like pointing to words, using the pictures to figure out the text, reading from left to right, etc. They should be able to read a book with a pattern in it by the end of K. Example: We ride on a bus, We ride on a plane, We ride on a train, etc., etc. They would use the pics to help figure out the word that changes in the pattern. Hope this helps!
