Re: Ladies Who Have Been Prescribed Clomid..Q?
Posted by MrsMessina
i disagree in that clomid is the "big guns" it is actually the FIRST thing used to treat infertility, WAY before moving on to much more invasive tactics
This statement is totally wrong. My RE told me clomid shouldn't be used for more than 6 rounds at a time, with a long break in between, because of what it can do to your body. And it literally is 1 step away from injectables, which is up there in the big guns department as well. Changing your diet, exercising more, stressing less, charting your cycles, for PCOS starting metformin, THOSE are the first things that are usually done to treat infertility....
You are SO right!! My RE flat out REFUSED to prescribe Clomid right away and said it's something to consider down the road after we try other avenues. (And again, I was NOT getting periods OR ovulating and still he didn't give it to me!!) I was put on Metformin and luckily for me I ovulated on my own in the 3rd month and get pregnant without the help of Clomid which goes to show you..............it's not always necessary to jump right into the fertility meds. Other possibilities should be explored first. I have to stress, nobody is saying your GYN is not a good doctor but they are NOT fertility specialists and it's been my experience along with many other ladies that because they don't know how to treat the extensive amount of fertility problems they use Clomid as if it's going to magically fix everything and it doesn't. In the meantime you run the risk of other problems.
You ovulate, you have regular (albeit longer cycles) but I would strongly recommend seeing an RE to find out why you're not getting pregnant instead of just taking Clomid and crossing your fingers. And your GYN is doing you a terrible disservice in not monitoring you. When I did take Clomid at least my GYN had the common sense to do an U/S before, during, and after my Clomid cycle to watch for overstimulation of my ovaries. I love my GYN but she was NOT the right person to address my fertility issues and the BEST thing I ever did was see an RE and I am proud to say I am almost 18 weeks pregnant with no complications. I don't know that I would be in the same place right now had I just stuck with my GYN.

How does clomid regulate your thyroid? i never said that it did
however, the problems that result from hashimoto's are major factors in infertility and many women with hypothyroidism and/or hashimoto's are given met and clomid
if it is known that there are no other factors and no male issues
all i was saying / asking
maybe we should all look at OP again armyofbabies wrote:

I don't have Hashimoto's BUT regardless of the underlying reasons for taking the Clomid you should be closely monitored because of the possible side effects. Your reasons for taking the Clomid may differ from ours BUT you still run the same risks we do with prolonged use and I just think it would be terrible if down the road you discovered a problem that could've either been avoided or rectified had you been properly monitored.
I hope you don't feel attacked, I don't think anyone is trying to make you upset or make you feel like your opinion and experience don't matter but so many women have gone through so much with so many doctors and meds that they speak from a place of long term experience and knowledge. The goal is not to upset anyone but to offer advice so someone can make informed choices and not waste time in getting pregnant.

Look, no one is attacking you. We are here to HELP not to make people feel defensive. I don't know your full story. I don't know what kind of testing you have had, I don't know what kind of testing your DH has had. But the combined experience of all the women here is ENORMOUS. There are so many of us who kick ourselves for not going to an RE sooner. I look at it this way. An RE's job is to GET you pregnant. That is all they do, they are trained to help with all kinds of fertility problems. An ob/gyn is there to take care of you once you get pregnant. Most do not know much about fertility issues and most do not have the time or capacity to deal with fertility problems. We are trying to tell the OP and anyone else who might have similar questions the best thing to do based on our knowledge and experience, which unfortunately is great.

Well, the response to the OP was that if she is considering going the clomid route she should see an RE, not consult her ob/gyn. And if she does go with her ob/gyn to make sure she is properly monitored.

It's never too early to see an RE. Like someone said, their job is to get you pregnant so to me why waste time with your GYN. If you're having any fertility probs the RE is the one to see.

Re: Ladies Who Have Been Prescribed Clomid..Q?
Sorry to post twice in a row but after reading back though this thread I think it's safe to say that everyone has said their peace and the bottom line is "to each his own". Different people have different expectations of their doctors and as long as you're comfortable with your care then there is nothing more to say. For me, the RE was the best route but I cannot force someone to make the same decision as me. I can only offer my advice and experience and I feel that is all everyone else was trying to do in this thread. Ultimately how you go about getting pregnant and who you choose to help you is your choice (as it should be) but everyone here was only trying to offer their insight and help. Just take it for what it was worth......it was not coming from a mean or attacking place. That's all.

I completely agree. I am 24 and have a child and currently seeing an RE. I am suffering from PCOS and what my gyn called Secondary Infertility. While my gyn is great and did what she could, I felt that she can only take me so far. IMHO, If I want to get a BFP then a RE will the one to do it.
Jeri, I hope you get the answers you need and You make the right decision for you. GL!!!!!

I think this statement was what upset people- because it's not their opinion, it's their experience and it's fact. I'm sure their frustration also stems from OB's acting as RE's. You wouldn't have your PCP perform a major surgery for you, so why take hormonal meds from someone who is not an expert?
Please also don't liken this board to petty 08-type drama... this is not about a guest wearing white to a wedding, it's about something so much more significant, and a statement like that just dismisses the real emotions involved on this board. and i dont agree that that is what upset people, since this is the first time it's being quoted

OK. I have to admit it did upset me a bit even though I didn't quote it, for the reasons ttc said.
And again, I am sorry but some of the things you stated aren't true. I think a lot of capitalized those words because we are too lazy to click on the italics feature

I was saying that that was why other people got frustrated (I'm not talking for them, but i see it as a frustrating statement).
Also, there's a difference between using caps for screaming, and using them to make sure that it is clear that misinformation is being posted. Some people (eventhough it may be wrong) take things that are posted on here as gospel. Maybe your information was right for your specific condition, but in general it is not, and i can't see being upset because others wanted to clarify that point. We need to be as (correctly) informed as possible when it comes to our health care. i understand what you are saying, but as long as its written or typed, it can be understood - it does nto need to be in caps - may sound silly, but it does imply yelling
oh well, again, to each HER own LOL

But that's many of our points... you may trust your doctor just fine. I trust my OB 150%, and will go back to her as soon as I get a pregnancy that sticks and I'm released from my RE back to my OB. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my OB, but I felt valuable time was wasted which I can now see after becoming more knowledgable and educated about Clomid. We are only saying that a regular OB is not going to monitor the way someone on Clomid should be.
Nobody is attacking anyone.

I'm sure she does. I trust my gyn. Like I said before, my Gyn is great but she can only take me so far with TTC and my IF issues, if I (and this is just my issues not anyone's else's) wanted a BFP it was going to be under the care of a RE not a gyn.
I did a lot of research on the Clomid after being told on here about how I needed to monitored. I brought all that up to my gyn. She agreed that I would benefit from seeing a RE as well.
I guess it really all does boil down to "to each her own".

Are you referring to me? Yes, I used some Caps in my response, but my intent was not to attack, but to emphasize. I do it a lot around here, I suppose it's habit, so I do hope you didn't take it as a personal affront.
I AM very passionate about this topic because I personally got screw@d from the Clomid. No, it doesn't happen to everyone, but as I'm learning, it is a distinct and very real possibility and not all that uncommon to develop these kind of complications (anovulatory clomid cycle and subsequent cysts). It's ending up costing me another month, possibly two or even three months, to wait around for these cysts to shrink and to move on to another cycle, with another possible dose of Clomid.
The reason why I share this information isn't too attack. It's my own personal struggle and I share it to provide more information to people venturing into this territory so they make informed decisions on how to proceed, and don't feel quite as blindsided as I did, when they decide to move forward with clomid, and end up encountering some of the issues I have.
