Ladies who's jobs do not offer paid maternity leave

Hi Ladies,

My job does not offer paid maternity leave and my husband and I are discussing how much time I should take off. I know being a new mom I will not be mentally ready to leave baby at one month (using vacation and sick I would only be with baby for a month) but I feel taking more than that unpaid will be a financial burden to us. My husband does get 8 weeks paid paternity leave so he will take over after my month with baby.

I was wondering if anyone was in the same boat as us and are you planning on taking more than what you have earned (sick and vacation) to stay with the baby.

I will be taking 12 weeks, although at least 6 weeks of that will be unpaid... DH and I are going to see how we will make ends meet and try to save what we can in the meantime, but I don't know if i will be ready to go back before 12 weeks.

with our first, I used 11 weeks on FMLA, only got NYS disability which is peanuts.

after that pregnancy, I decided to take short term disability so that when the time came, I could use it with my second child (pays roughly 2500 per month). Still not what I make but much better than nothing.

honestly, for me, there was NO way I could leave a 4 week old. I dont even know that your doc will sign off on returning to work at 4 weeks, especially if you have a section.

what type of work do you do?

too late, there is a waiting period of 10 months before it can kick in and pregnancy will be noted as a pre-existing condition.

Re: Ladies who's jobs do not offer paid maternity leave

At this point- even though it will certainly be a financial burden- I am still telling them that I am taking the full 12 weeks under FMLA. The way I figure- I'll see how I feel at 8 weeks and if I can return to work then I will... or maybe I will try to do something part time for the remaining 4 weeks.

It's def going to be hard, but I really don't want to sacrifice that time with the baby.

typically, a doc will not "sign off" for return to work until the 6 week appt. I know that since I took FMLA, I had to get a note from my OB releasing me to return to work and he wouldn't do that until at least 6 weeks (I did have a csection).

I would plan on taking 6 weeks Chat Icon

Re: Ladies who's jobs do not offer paid maternity leave

I'm starting a new job that doesn't offer paid maternity leave. Since its my first year I will have only accumulated 5 days in sick time.

I plan on taking 6 weeks.

Mine does not have paid maternity leave- I will be using all of my vacation and sick time then will be taking the rest unpaid. Did the same with DS and extended it another two weeks because 6 weeks was not enough for me.

I also do not get paid maternity. We are able to build comp time. So I worked as much overtime as I was able to and got time half time banked. So i was able to take that plus some other time and I took off 10 weeks at full pay.

Re: Ladies who's jobs do not offer paid maternity leave

I am taking 12 weeks under FMLA plus 2 weeks of vacation for a total of 14. DH will be taking the first two weeks off after the baby is born.

An FYI if you have not used sick days or vacation days, you can use these towards your time off under FMLA.

With disability you get paid for 6 weeks with vaginal birth and 8 weeks with a C.

Re: Ladies who's jobs do not offer paid maternity leave

i recently spoke with our HR dept and this is what i plan on doing...

1 week using PTO time, then for the next 5 weeks it will be short term disability which will be at 60% of my salary. (5 weeks or until Dr says i'm cleared) - total of 6 weeks paid
after that i will be taking an additional 6 weeks unpaid.

My company offers up to 6 months of unpaid leave after Dr clearance for bonding time but i think DH and I can only afford to do 6 weeks unpaid.

i was told i can also use some of my PTO time towards the bonding time so not all of it will be unpaid but i'm afraid to use all of my time and then have nothing for during the year for dr visits, etc. (I'm due in Nov)

NYS pays about 175 per week. 6 or 8 weeks depends on delivery.

Re: Ladies who's jobs do not offer paid maternity leave

DD#1 I took 2 months of vacation time and then 3 months of leave without pay. I stayed with her until she was 6 months and then my husband, MIL, and mother took care of her for another month. She then went to daycare at 7 months. I feel it still wasn't enough time but we couldn't afford for me to stay home.
Now pg with #2 and just bought a house so I will have no choice but to be out for 8 weeks with a csection and go back.Chat Icon

i'm allowed to take 12 weeks off, but i think only 1 week is full pay. the rest will have to be part time disability or something. i'm waiting until i hit 13 weeks to talk to HR about the details.

Re: Ladies who's jobs do not offer paid maternity leave

The job I ha when I was preg with #1 did not offer paid leave. I had to use my 2 weeks vaca & sick days but I took 12 weeks & the job I have now doesn't offer anything either (they actually give less vaca & sick days too) but I am still taking 12 weeks.

We always manage by cutting back on some things & it's only temporary. Once I go back, we'll have that little extra money again.
