Re: Large head and MRI - WWYD?
I would get a second opinion.. but to be honest, if the second doctor said not to do it I would probably doubt him too and end up just doing the MRI for my own peace of mind. If you think thats the choice you're going to end up making I would just go ahead with the scheduled MRI. Good luck!

I think I would go for a second opinion with a pediatric neurologist before sedation and an MRI. My ped scared me about my DD's head size and I went to a pediatric neurologist over the concerns. I think that ped's that aren't specialized in areas like this jump to unnecessary testing to cover themselves very quickly.
Crashing...I agree. You should go see a pediatric neurologist. If you need a recommendation FM me and I will give you the information. I work for a MRI site that works directly with a pediatric neuro.
I agree! Especially since it seems your little one has made some progress. Get a second opinion with a pediatric neurologist. Good luck!

Re: Large head and MRI - WWYD?
I would get another opinion, but regardless would do the MRI. Please don't take this as me trying to scare you, but I am a special education teacher and I work with a child with hydrocephalus. He has a learning disability and attentional/organizational issues. I believe these are a result of him not having had proper treatment of the condition when he was younger. I know it is scary to have your child go through a procedure. My DS had a surgery at the age of 11 months in the hospital. It is so overwhelming but kids are resilient and my son is fine now! It can be so much harder on us than it actually is on them. Good luck in your decision!

Re: Large head and MRI - WWYD?
My DH and I decided that we're going to go ahead and do the MRI. We thought about going for a second opinion first but honestly, the only way we are going to get peace of mind is if we do it. I could not live with myself if we decided not to and then down the road we find out he could have been diagnosed earlier. Keeping my fingers crossed this is nothing!

Re: Large head and MRI - WWYD?
Hi ds started out in the 50% then 75th by two months and off the charts by 4 months.
I noticed gross motor delays from four months.... Late to hold up his head, roll, sit, so we called Early Intervention and he gets PT twice a week.
He is progressing now and took him a little longer because his head grew so much faster than the rest of his body.
As far as an MRI, the neurologist didn't see a need for it that early on, but did take his blood and urine to rule out some things and just wanted us to follow up at a year, so we will.
The neurologist said she didn't see the need to do the MRI just yet even if the did, we would take the same course of action (PT).
Did the US show fluid? We had two US's and they came back normal (no fluid) so the has been no further testing other than following up with the neurologist.
DS is catching up now as his muscles gain enough strength to support his head.

He did not roll over (back to belly), had a weak trunk therefore did not sit up at all (nor would he guard himself) and would not bear weight on his feet.
He is just shy of 7 months now and has rolled once, will sit up for a few minutes, and will now stand if you support him.
When I had asked the Dr. if we could wait a few weeks and see if he progressed she said that didn't matter. She still wants us to have it. It's scheduled for next week and I just don't want to do it but I don't want to regret it g-d forbid.
Sounds like DS. Did your ped send you to a neurologist?

Re: Large head and MRI - WWYD?
My DS was always 99%, the doctors measure his head twice to be sure each visit. He was like that birth so the don't worry. He was always behind in milestones, of course bc his head was huge! 4 yrs later he is totally fine

Re: Large head and MRI - WWYD?
Forget the question of whether to do the MRI more importantly a ped should not be following your DC a ped neuro shouldd. Please take your DC to one. It isn't a second opinion bc you haven't seen one before. A neuro may very well suggest an MRI but they have specialized training your ped does not have. Btw my DD was and has been about 1 inch off the charts well past 100% for head size. We had to see a ped neuro and do sonos. We did not have delays thoughso not sure there.
