Re: Late bedtime for infant?

My DD goes to bed between 8 and 9 most nights because she is usually ready by then.

ETA: I let her sleep as much as she wants during the day (which usually isn't much). Once 7pm rolls around, I make sure she is up because then she will be ready to go back to sleep by 9 the latest. She usually doesn't sleep until 7pm anymore, maybe 5:30-6. Then I give her a bath at around 7:45ish when she starts getting cranky. She loves the bath so it distracts her from being tired. Then I dry her off, lotion her up, put on fresh diaper and pjs. The nightlight, mobile, fan and humidifier go on, lights go off, bottle in her mouth. She is 95% of the time down for the count after the bottle.

Re: Late bedtime for infant?

i think its important to keep in mind that not all kids sleep the same and perhaps morning routines are different.

my wonderful Skylar-Bears ready for bed anywhere from 10-11 pm and will sleep 8-9 hours (typically 8). Of course, if she slept longer it makes since to put her down earlier.

every baby is different

Re: Late bedtime for infant?

My ds always and still has a late bedtime. When he was that age he went to bed around 10 and slept in the next morning.
He is 14 mos now and goes to bed around 9-930.

Then what's all that time between 6-10pm? Cat naps? Makes no sense to me...

My son is 3 1/2 months and takes cat naps until 9/9:30. Sometimes if he wakeds up from a cat nap lets say around 7:30 I try to hold offf feeding until he's asking for it hopefully by at least 8:30 or so. This way his tummy is full for his real sleep time (9/9:30pm) He will give me 8-9 hours too Chat Icon

I do think it's late but it works for him for now. I wouldn't push him yet to go earlier. I tried and he just wakes up an hour later, wide awake and ready to play. Something about that late time frame puts him out through the night.

Re: Late bedtime for infant?

Tommy starts getting cranky around 630ish. Then we start the bedtime routine between 630-7pm and he is usually sleeping in his crib by 8 - 830pm. This is the time he always started to get drowsy even as a tiny newborn so it eventually evolved into his bedtime.

Tara - if you put her down at 1030pm what time does she get up?

She at least goes somewhere around 9 hours. But she could end that as quickly as it started!Chat Icon

Hey, I am not complaining about the STTN!! Chat Icon I just honestly have no idea how to handle our nighttime routine then!

See it's funny to me when everyone says, they start to get drowsy around a certain time. She's always drowsy before a nap, so I don't see a huge difference between her sleepy signs before nap or bedtime. It's very confusing!

Re: Late bedtime for infant?

Tristan is 3 months and usually goes to sleep between 9 and 10pm. He had been sleeping through the night (until 7 or 8) since about 8 weeks, but the past few weeks has been waking between 4 and 5 to eat and then back down to sleep until 7 or 8.

DH gets home sometime around 7 or even later. I try to hold off to give DS his bath until Daddy is home and then we usually eat dinner in between - I really want to try to get a better bedtime routine going and have been bringing him in his bedroom for a feed, a story and some quiet time before settling him to sleep - would love for that to follow the bath without dinner in between and maybe getting him in for 8, but we're having a little trouble getting it all in at the moment!

Re: Late bedtime for infant?

6 sounds really early. At 4 months we would start bedtime at about 6:50 with Emerson. We changed her diaper, got her into her PJ's, gave her the last bottle of the day, and by 7:30 she was passed out cold and we'd put her in the crib to sleep all night. Just based on what you have been saying about Riley waking up constantly until passing out at 10:30'ish it sounds like to me you're forcing a bedtime on her that's too early. She seems like she is cat napping because she is trying but she really isn't ready at all to sleep for the night.

She may do better staying up until 10-10:30 and then when she goes down to sleep she will stay asleep until morning. Try getting her ready for bed around 9:30, feed her for the last time, and then relax with her where it's quiet and then put her down and see how she does.

I just know from my experience with Emerson that if we put her down before she's ready she does nothing but fuss, babble, yell, and pitch a fit. I think you're trying to get her down too early. By her being so resistant she's trying to tell you she isn't ready yet. I would start focusing on a later bedtime and see how it goes. She might surprise you and go right to sleep with no problem. I know you would rather have her asleep earlier but it sounds like she isn't tired enough that early in the evening to go to bed for the night. Chat Icon

Re: Late bedtime for infant?

Reilly is 12 weeks and has been up until 2/3 weeks ago going to bed at 10:00/10:30 and it was so hard to keep her awake. So I eliminated the 10pm bottle upped her ounces so she was making up for the lost bottle and now we put her down at 8:30. She was staying asleep from anywhere to 3 or 5 then needed her binky and went back down till feeding again at 7:45. She seems to be doing well with the new bedtime!

I rarely get her down by 6, actually I probably never have. I usually try to get her down by 7...I used to do 8, 9...I've tried everything. The thing is, when Riley wakes up, she wakes up crying. Supposedly if they wake up crying that just means they haven't slept enough...and we can get her right back to sleep once she wakes up, she just needs our help. She does this pretty much all day too. Her naps are rarely more than a half hour, and she wakes up fussing or crying. I think she has a self soothing problem more than anything. The thumb works to GET her to sleep but she hasn't figured out that it can put her back to sleep when she suddenly wakes.

I think that's all normal though. Emerson never napped more than a half hour (if that) when she was Riley's age. She didn't figure out napping until she was about 8 months old. As for all the other stuff...........we went through the same things. If Emerson woke up we ALWAYS had to help get her back to sleep. Always. If we tried to leave her to figure it out on her own she would never sleep. I don't think Riley not being able to self soothe is a problem.....I just think she's still so little. I think it's all normal and common. Trust me, she will get better at all of this stuff. It really does take some time. Also realize, some babies are always a PITA when it comes to sleeping. Look at Kayla...........Denise and Paul had to hold her and put her to bed until she was at least 1 and she didn't even STTN until she was that age too. So it could be worse. At least Riley sleeps once she gets settled.

Don't overthink it all.........just do what you need to in order to get her to sleep. Keep trying different things, even later bedtimes, and eventually it will work itself out. Chat Icon Chat Icon You'll figure it out!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Luv ya!! Chat Icon

Re: Late bedtime for infant?

DS usually goes to be between 8 and 9. Sometimes, he'll take a nap on the way home from daycare. He'll wake up to eat and depending on how much he napped during the day, he'll either go back to sleep right after eating or be up for a while.

It sounds like your DD isn't really ready for bed when you put her down for the night. When she wakes up a little while later, do you just try to put her back to sleep or do you keep her awake?

I've done both...trying to put her back to sleep (often that works, but then she wakes again a half hour later and the process keeps repeating) or keeping her up, until she finally gets so fussy and can't take it anymore, and finally conks out near 10.

Oh well...as long as she keeps giving us that nice 8+ hour stretch, I suppose I shouldn't complain! I just get so confused with when to start her bedtime routine!! And hell...when I go back to work this is gonna get even trickier!Chat Icon

okay - so here we go...

bed at 10:30...we took her out of the carseat (she fell asleep in it on the way home) at 1:00 and tried to dreamfeed her - but i was dumb and turned a light on and woke her up. We fed her and were asleep by 1:30 (emma too). She woke up at 7:00 and took 2 ounces and went RIGHT back out. At 9:10 - i had to wake her up to leave to go to the sitters' house - otherwise she would've slept until WHO KNOWS when!
