Laundry detergent sticker shock!
I had to get detergent and I was at Waldbaums today. Let's just say, they made the bottles smaller with 2x concentrate and it was 16.99 for Tide! All the brands were like this. I am by no means cheap- but for soap????? DH and I are going to Cosctco tomorrow to get detergent there and we are adding a shelving system for the garage for things like this. I was told that they are trying to use less plastic....unbelievable!!! mad: Anyone else seen this in the stores, or am I the first lucky one to see this?!

Re: Laundry detergent sticker shock!
I have to buy the 2x HE detergent for my new energy star washer. It is expensive. For 100oz, it's $8.99, whereas before with regular detergent I could get a 200oz for $5.99 on sale. It's ridiculous!
However, you do use less detergent with the 2x detergent.

I have been using all free and clear 3x power for a long time now...At $3.99/bottle in Target it is a huge bargain. I do plenty of laundry and it doesn't cost much at all.

Maybe it was just Waldbaums then? I am going to check out Target. I thought maybe because of the gas prices and transporting it by truck..... Thank you for the heads up with Target.

The grocery store has the most ridiculous prices on everything. I only go there to get things I can't get at Target (produce and meat usually). I couldn't believe how much the diapers are at Pathmark, which is usually the cheapest of the chains.

Target has Gain on sale..$8.49 for 2x for 64 loads. I thought that was a good price. I also find that target is cheaper for cleaning supplies and detergent in general.

Re: Laundry detergent sticker shock!
yeah they are definitely pricey - but part of the problem may have been that you were in waldbaum's - the most expensive supermarket.
when my sister worked for king kullen - AGES ago lol - she was dating one of the department manager's in her store and he had to go each week to waldbaum's because they were the big competitor - so, each week he would go and mark down certain prices - record them, check them out and then go back to king kullen and adjust them to be lower than waldbaum's.
so one day i asked him - is that the most expensive store? and he said yes, waldbaum's always has the highest prices and we go out of our way to make ours lower - so, king kullen was like second followed by the rest and this was before stop and shop was big which i'm assuming is pretty well priced - definitely lower than KK. pathmark was always the lowest but the one near me is not a nice store so i go to either KK, shop rite or stop and shop.
hope that helps! most people don't know that - i know i didn't.

Re: Laundry detergent sticker shock!
Honestly- I just buy the cheapest brand. It's just soap like you said. Tide is a HUGE rip off. I go to BJ's or Costco and look at the unit pricing. Which ever brand has the cheapest unit price- I buy. It's usually All or Wisk or Era or something. Trust me- they are all the same.

Re: Laundry detergent sticker shock!
I do think that it makes a difference in the brand. I get mine usually at Costco or one of the drug stores when they have a sale.
I don't go to Target reguarly, but I may start seeing that their prices are very good on this stuff.
A bottle lasts us a while though.

Re: Laundry detergent sticker shock!
Tide is a very expensive brand...I never, ever buy it, not only for the price, but I believe they test on animals, and I try to avoid companies that do that.

Re: Laundry detergent sticker shock!
But do you all find that there is no difference in the brand? I use to buy whatever was on sale or the cheaper stuff but I think Tide cleans better. I did buy the Costco brand recently and I really think it didn't do as well so I bought Tide again. And I am not usually a "more $$ means it's better" person.

I just stocked up on Purex, on sale for $1.99 a bottle (at Shop Rite). It'll last me 6 months or more.

I really don't find the expensive detergent does any better than the cheap stuff (I buy Purex or Arm Hammer, almost always for $3-$5)

Re: Laundry detergent sticker shock!
I always buy Tide when it's on sale at S&S for either $10 or $11 - that big bottle lasts us for a very long time. so $20 or so per year for detergent isn't that bad IMO

a 300 oz for $16... still a lot, but better than at fairway (a whopping $23 for the same bottle )

Re: Laundry detergent sticker shock!
You have to wait until they go on sale then stock up. My CVS had two for one last week.
