Re: Layoff update
Just spoke to my union rep. 4000 teachers will be laid off in the DOE. My principal is meeting with us tomorrow to discuss this.
Layoffs are by seniority, right? And not by the school, but by their hire date by the city? SO then how could someone with seven years be laid off?

R- no clue! there are so many different messages out there.
You heard 4000.
I heard 6000.
It IS by city senority. Based on their hire date by the city.
So with that I have no idea how someone with 7 yrs could be layed off--maybe she has a VERY rare liscense?? I dont know. I will see what I can find out.
This whole thing is beyond aggravating and nerve racking

Re: Layoff update
We have one teacher so far in our school who got the letter. He would have been tenured this September. He is licensed in secondary Social Studies. He's the only one I know who received one as of now.

Re: Layoff update
I think the "letters" that people are talking about are excessing letters. From my understanding, schools have not received budgets yet, so I don't understand how these pink slips are being issued.
Some principals can tell if they will be excessing now without their budgets based on teachers who are returning from leaves..

Re: Layoff update
DH said he heard 6k layoff, but approx 2k are retiring, so they just won't fill those spots, so 4k are laid off

Re: Layoff update
Our district rep was in the building today and said yes indeed layoffs are city wide so if a group of people all came in on the same date they then cut those people according to their file number.

I don't think there will be excessing it's straight to layoffs. I have not heard of anyone getting a letter.

Re: Layoff update
the budget was not released as of 4:45 today. They kept putting up a "be patient" message on Galaxy.
I guess we will hear tomorrow.

Re: Layoff update
Our rep said there are 3 lists this year...one to layoff teachers who have not met certification, one for layoffs and one for excessing.

I don't think there will be excessing it's straight to layoffs. I have not heard of anyone getting a letter.
There will need to be excessing at the building level, though, probably following the layoffs. For example, the school downstairs from me will be literally half empty because they have so many new teachers. All the schools will probably have postions cut. My school, which is mostly people who've been in the system for 10 years or more, will probably lose people to excessing, for example, to help fill the vacancies downstairs from my school.
According to my DR, any of us who are lucky enough to keep our jobs could be shuffled about the city.
