I'd heard that that money is to BUILD schools, and that we really may not see much, if any of it, so it probably wouldn't save jobs (this is as per our district/region's) UFT guy...I feel like this is all a bad game...
This is exactly what I heard as well. I think this is not going to help the city schools at all.
Me too..I heard it could not be used to fill budget gaps. Hopefully, the UFT scored points by being cooperative and will get something in return.
Yeah right...I am sure NOT!

Re: Layoffs
This is just awful.....hoping you are all safe.
My friend Tom was just hired by the Board of Ed NYC and he is not even a teacher! He is going for training this summer for six weeks and will work in a rough area...but seriously, how can they hire an uncertified teacher and layoff a certified one?
Makes NO sense.

I'm sorry that is BS! They say they are on a hiring freeze but they aren't! They would rather hire people with no experience for cheap than keep the expereinced teachers they have

7 years and less is a LOT more than 6K teachers.
eta: I really hope the message is getting mixed coming down the line - I think its '07 and not 7 years. and doesn't NYC have to declare a financial emergency to layoff teachers? Have they don'e that yet?

ITA. Maybe people with under 7 yeas should be on alert. That's what they told us a year ago. But there's no way the city is laying off everyone with under seven years experience. That's probably tens of thousands of people. The DOE wouldn't be able to function.

Re: Layoffs
We were also told that 10,000 letters would be going out, but there would not be that many layoffs..we were also told that if you get a letter, you won't know anything until Sept., since they can't technically lay you off until Sept. Ugh, sitting all summer with that letter over your head is just ridiculous!

Remember '09 was ahiring freeze so while some people were hired in the grand scheme not many. This is why they are reaching so far back in years. Bloomie can declare a "doomsday" budget as early as Tuesday if Albany does not set their budget.

Yes. My district rep said anyone with less than 7 yrs should be"prepared".
While she does not *think* it will go up that high in most lisc. areas, it can in some--since there are less art lisc. then say english, kwim?
Looking at the numbers though--(from wikipedia) As of 2005, there were about 118,000 in-service educators and 17,000 paraprofessionals in the union.
it seems unlikely that in MOST lisc. it will go up to 7yrs.

This makes sense but still $ucks! I hope no ONE loses their job. They need to STOP hiring! ANd why does the union do nothing about them still hiring???

Re: Layoffs
I am thinking that confusion has set in.
From all the documentation I am reading,....and even the letter from Klien to principals,.... it only says 2007 teachers. My hope is that some people are hearing "07" teachers and getting confused with it meaning 2007 teachers.
Although any way it would be bad. It will be ok! I hope for that this is all for someone to save the day!

All summer to think about that? Are we supposed to be looking for other jobs if we get that letter, or just wait?... It s going to be a fun summer.

AMEN to that! ANd this is what I say ever paycheck when I see their deduction. The cops and firemen have such strong unions who fight for them. Ours is in the back pocket of Bloomberg and Klein!

Cops, firefighters, sanitation you name it they are stronger then the UFT! Considering the talk that the '07 teachers who are up for tenure won't get it when layoffs come I am really feeling like this union is good for nothing!

I hope we all keep our jobs.
And when Mulgrew's term is up- remember that you were disappointed in his leadership. The buck has to stop with him. How many of us voted in the election for UFT president? The numbers are lousy. There was a pretty strong opposition slate running but they had trouble spreading their message and they only got 9% of the vote (including mine)- but too many of us do not vote at all! We need to do something about that next time or BloomKlein will own more of us than they already do!
