Re: Let's discuss: Chef Anthony Bourdain calls Paula Deen "most dangerous person to America" ( not celeb-related, more weight related)

My dad isn't Paula Deen and he became adult onset diabetic. My MIL isn't Paula Deen and she also became adult onset diabetic. AND NEITHER ONE COOK LIKE PAULA DEEN or EAT food similar to her recipes on a daily basis.

Becoming adult onset diabetic is actually UNFORTUNATELY not always simply related to the food you eat.

I feel bad people are going to slam her now when she could have become diabetic no matter how she cooked.

I think it would benefit her and her audience to modify some of her recipes and show how the same recipes can still taste great if you do have diabetes

I think Her son Bobby is doing this on The Cooking Channel.

While I don't think I personally would classify her as 'the most dangerous person to America', I'm not surprised that she has diabetes. Her food is loaded with fat, saturated fat, sugar, and calories. Most of the recipes she makes are, IMO, 'special occasion'/'once in awhile' foods.

I'm also not surprised that her PR team is going to spin this in a way to market her to a whole new audience. I agree with Bourdain for calling her out like that. That's how he is, and part of the reason why I think he's flippin' cool.

You are an idiot if you think you can make her food every night and its ok. . .you deserve whatever happens to you.

However, if your family is coming over for Thanksgiving and you want to make mac and cheese that is AMAZING and uses 4lbs of butter. . .she is your girl . . .I love her food but I don't eat it every day and to blame her for people being fat or diabetic is insane.

Still better than fast food IMO!

Exactly! No one is eating this stuff every night. I have about 5 recipes that I use all the time for parties and special occasions.

Re: Let's discuss: Chef Anthony Bourdain calls Paula Deen "most dangerous person to America" ( not celeb-related, more weight related)

I think there's 2 issues at hand.

One is that she cooks extremely unhealthy meals and has diabetes, whether or not as a result of her cooking. Could be genetics, maybe not.

The other is that she has made an empire off of those unhealthy meals, and now, will be profiting from her endorsement for diabetes medication.

Do I think it makes her look shady? Yes.

Will it definitely make me look at her differently? Yes.

But I don't eat her kind of cooking, and I know for sure she doesn't ever promote eating it in moderation. I watch Food Network daily.

She's a very piggish woman.

I watch neither of them, nor any cooking shows.

I find it hilarious that she's now in cahoots with Novo NorDisk. Classic. Good for her I say.

I saw a recent Dr. Oz rerun where she confessed her smoking...I don't know how long ago that show aired, but Oz was concerned for her overall health and was going to work with her on stopping smoking...she's a hot mess.

I love Anthony Bourdain.

He's right. We live in an overweight/obese country and while her food looks delicious and decadent, knowing she had diabetes she hasn't really done anything on her show to alter her menus or make anything more healthful.

It IS quite shady that her endorsement of a diabetes drug coincides with this announcement. In addition, her younger son also launched a new show taking her recipes and trying to re-create them in a more healthy way. The timing of all of this makes you stop and wonder.

I don't thin she's dangerous. I mean her diabetes shows what eating like that can do to a person. I did think "yeah great now she's going to endorse how you can eat like crap but still live fine due to drugs" when it's really not true. Diabetes can be controlled very well with meds, but it's no joke.

I think it would be VERY cool if she started showing some lower fat/lower calorie/lower sugar versions of her famous foods.

I love him and I have to say since I didn't read through all of the other posts, but in his last book, which I read...he did apologize the BAM! guy and the other Food Network people that he criticized.

Online it said this all happened in Sept.ish of 2011. Who cares - she is all shtick. People want to see her add fat to her food.

When I'm in Louisiana if I ask for any "dressing" on the side or sauces they look at you like you're nuts.

Said the chef who specializes in French cooking.

No one eats this every day, or every week for that matter. He needs to calm down.

Insert "alchoholic" before the word chef.
All he does on his shows is drink and find remedies for his hangover.

And a by the way - a person can get diabetes from consuming too much alchohol.

yeah but he's not the spokesperson for antabuse.

No he's not...but he'll be the first one begging to get the first available set of lungs or the first available liver once they fail.

I am a fan of both of them and enjoy all of the shows they host. He is an attention seeker, only he plays it like "I hate you all, you all can kiss my ass.......now watch my show, eat at my restaurants and buy my books, you horrid b@stards."

Exactly!!! I didn't see anyone throwing Patrick Swayze to the wolves when he got Pancreatic Cancer which was a Direct result of his heavy drinking and smoking...... But if Paula died (god forbid) a lot of people would say "she had it comin...." Chat Icon

It's like Ritalin sponsering Chuck E. Cheese, or vice versa. I find this partnership quite shady. It's like "Watch my show/Buy my books, products, etc. and, if you end up with diabetes, buy the medication I endorse."

Exactly, I think it would be more noble of her to revise her recipes to promote a more healthy lifestyle.

Generally speaking, I'm not one to jump to drugs as a quick fix to cure a health condition. Maybe we should try looking at the food we put into our bodies before looking for a quick fix.

I only read a handful of replies, so hopefully I am not repeating.

I feel bad for the woman.

Yes, her SHOW is based on Southern Comfort food and she doesn't try to make the recipes healthy. I don't think she should have to. If you don't want to watch her or don't want to try her recipes, then don't. There are other shows targeting people who choose to cook/eat healthy. And that is fine.

We are all adults and should know when watching her show that we can't possibly consume 4 sticks of butter per meal and stay healthy....she shouldn't have to put a warning on before her show that tells us this. Just like, as adults we should know that going to McDonalds every day and eating Large extra value meals is unhealthy. As adults, I think it's a shame that we blame everyone but ourselves for our eating habits.

She has a contract with the Food Network, she is an entertainer....just because she cooks what she cooks on her show, doesn't mean that is what she eats every day.

She films her show 30 days a year...so even if she consumes all that butter 30 days out of 365....to me, that is moderation.

I'd hate to see her show change personally, I get a kick out of seeing what crazy things she is making. I could see her adding in some comments like, "This is my Momma's recipe and once in a while its a nice treat."

I feel that unless you eat dinner with Paula Deen every night or you are her doctor, you have no right saying that she did this to herself or that she should have seen it coming. Diabetes is an awful disease, telling her she did it to herself is like telling a smoker they deserve cancer. Ridiculous.

Exactly! This reminds me of the people who tried to sue McDonald's for making them fat. I love Paula Deen's show. DH and I will watch with our mouths watering going "OMG that looks amazing!" followed by "OMG that would give me a heart attack!" We've never actually MADE any of her recipes and if we did it would be for a special occassion. Watching her show doesn't make me want to go out and fry everything I eat.

There was a show on PBS/13/21 called 2 Fat Ladies...anyone remember? They likd their butter/mayo to.

Also, should we blame Ford/Chevy if we get caught speeding b/c they made the car that goes faster?

i don't have an issue with anything other than this. i agree with what everyone else is saying: personal responsibility, her food is not for every day eating, etc... the endorsement is wrong, to me.

i like her show, i don't love it. i have made a few of her recipes. my favorite of them all, doesn't have any butter in it... her taco soup! reminds me, i should make it, this weekend Chat Icon

She loves her deep southern cooking. The Neelys cook it too. The are both overweight. She started as a single mom struggling to make ends meet and started a business packing brown bag lunches. She's come damn far! She does many wonderful things for childrens charities too. I think piggish is a terrible way to describe someone Chat Icon

One of the reasons I never watch Paula Deen's programs--even though I find the woman herself extremely likable-- is because I can't possibly relate to anything she cooks. In fact, I usually feel slightly nauseated just watching her put all the ingredients together. Just the amount of butter that she uses is quite scary and completely unappealing. Just not something I would ever want to cook or eat!

I am not a health fanatic! I do love butter, and I do use it in cooking when making something special. But NEVER in quantities she uses it and only on special occasions!

So, I must side with Anthony Bourdain here, especially considering she has diabetes and yet continues to promote her extremely unhealthy style of cooking and eating all WHILE being an official spokesperson for diabetes drug! Chat Icon
