light or dark kitchen counters - opinions please

we went to look at granite for our kitchen counter today... in person i seem to go for darker shades of green: peacock green, victoria regina, verde jade...
but when i look at pictures of other peoples kitchens - i do love how a lighter shade looks.
our cabinets are going to be on the darker side - they are a cherry.
opinions?

also, if you have a green shade of granite in your kitchen, could you post a pic and tell me the name?

I love light granite with dark cabinets.
I think you should go with what you like in person.

mrs kelly, im on the same boat as you- dark vs light granite with cherry colored cabinets?

plus, im grappling between honey/maple cabinets with Dark granite

i think we'll wind up with cherry cabinets cuz hubby likes them-still doesnt help with the granite dilemma lol

i do think i like the cherry cabinets with the light granite because our kitchen area is small, more like a galley kitchen, and i think light granite with a light backsplash would brighten the kitchen area up a lot...

decisions decisions!!!

We have the peacock verde and love it, but we have white cabinets. Here's a pic:

We have ubatuba granite in the main bathroom. It's a very dark green with speckles on copper, gold. I love the way it looks. It's gorgeous, BUT you see every single little speck of everything on it. When we redo our kitchen, I vow to never get dark granite again. If you're ok with that, then I think ubatuba would look great with any color cabinets.

I like light granite with dark cabinets...

I feel like it's not very common though. Go with what you like in person.

I like light/dark combo... the contrast is appealing.. but with a green color against the wood it should look good regardless! My girlfriend has cherry with a very dark granite and it looks lovely.

I have Imperial coffee on my peninsula - it's got a lot of green to it. I'll post a pic later.

mish mosh - is that the uba tuba?

i saw that in person and it's pretty, i like the other greens i saw a little better - but that is definitely comparable to get an idea in a picture.
i'm not as worried about the cleaning aspect, as i am about LOVING it in person. i want to do this kitchen once, right, and have no regrets.
i feel like when it comes to cleaning, there's pros and cons to everything.
i have stark white in my downstairs bathroom for counter and cream upstairs - and while they can be a PITA to keep clean, i have no regrets bc i'm just so happy with the looks.

I have cherry cabinets and when we were looking for granite I had my heart set on Uba Tuba...I just always thought that i wanted dark counters. It never looked quite right to me, I would take a cabinet door with me when looking at slabs to see what looked best with my cabinet color. We ended up with a lighter counter and I am sooo happy I did. More pictures in my album!

Something also to think about is the style back splash you want.

For me, personally, I think a busy back splash looks better with quartz counter since it is a solid color. Grainte has a lot of movement and colors and I think looks better with a more subtle back splash.

We have cherry cabinets with a kafe finish on it so they are dark. We went with a taupe/tan glass and tumbled marble mosaic back splash and taupe quartz counters. I love it. I will post pictures later.

I have cherry cabinets and a green granite countertop and i'm really not a fan. If I could have chosen I would have went with a lighter color.

I only have these terrible cell phone pictures but we have very dark cabinets (Victorian is the color) with light quartz countertops (Astral Pearl)

I can't seem to get my pictures resized so I've added a kitchen album.

I'm a big fan of the contracting colors, so I tend to like the dark Cherry cabinets with the lighter granite.

I like the look of contrast. It doesn't have to be dramatic because I think even subtle mixing of lights and darks adds drama.
