LIJ Womans Hospital vs South Nassau

I am not pregnant yet, but I am trying to decide now if I want to stay with my doctor or leave. I have been going to Dr. Brandon in RVC for the past 7 or so years and I really do LOVE him and he delivers at south nassau. He also delivers at Mercy but I am not very fond of Mercy. I was going to switch doctors to deliver eventually at the new woman's hospital because I have heard nothing but wonderful things...but I am not sure if it's worth it. Especially since I would be going to a women's group..and there is no guarantee who eventually delivers in the end. I am trying to figure this out before my next check up which is in a few weeks..whether I go to my regular scheduled appt...or try out the new doctor affiliated with LIJ.

Advice from ladies who know about both hospitals would be great. I know there is a huge difference between the NICU's, but is there a very big difference between the rooms themselves?

I am so confused...any guidance will help!

I have heard good things about all hospitals. Mercy is supposed to be good and I thing that SNassau has a good women's area also. Lij I know has beautiful rooms because they are new and large and single. I think the most important thing ( for me) I pick the OB first then the quality of care at the facility then the hosp for the room.

I know that really didn't help you sorry

Personally I would change to deliver at either LIJ or NSUH, and it has nothing to do with the rooms (though that's a nice plus).

The NICU and standards of care would be enough to make me change.

Re: LIJ Womans Hospital vs South Nassau

I, too, had a dr in RVC that was affiliated with both South Nassau and Mercy. Granted, I didn't LOVE my RVC dr, but I did want to switch to deliver at LIJ. I switched about 3 months before I conceived to a woman's group on the North Shore who is affiliated with LIJ. I specifcially wanted LIJ because of the level of care. God willing we will all have happy, healthy pregnancies, but for the chance that I might need the extra care and expertise, I switched. I'm so glad I did, too, btw. Not only do I love my new dr, but I have been happy with LIJ so far. I have been to LIJ twice for my sonograms. It has all state-of-the-art equipment and the staff and doctors were awesome. I also have a girlfriend who is a nurse at LIJ in the NICU and raves about the doctors and level of care (she referred me to my new dr).

Good luck!

I am delivering at South Nassau. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous. I don't know how they compare to the new wing at LIJ, but they certainly don't look like typical hospital rooms. I love my ob, and wouldn't change just to deliver at LIJ, unless I was high-risk. The NICUs certainly can't compare.

HI! I too go to Dr Brandon at RVC and love him...

I delivered my first DC at Mercy in 2010 with Dr Brandon - emergency c section due to preclampsia - and I have to say everything was great from the anesthesia, to the c section, recovery, nurses, food, etc. I had a great stay and was very happy. I also know that Dr Brandon is one of the best surgeons if you happen to need a c section.

I am currently debating on where I want to deliver between Winthrop, Mercy and South Nassau this time around and i think I am going to go with Winthrop. They have a great NICU and I've heard great things from people who have delivered there.

Teh only reason I am not going back to mercy is because of their visiting hours - I believe my DC can only visit me for 2 hours a day and I dont want her to feel left out and liike the new baby is keeping me from her. Otherwise, i would deliever again at Mercy. Both of my sisters and cousin delievered at Mercy with babies in the NICU there and they great.

My sister and cousin in law both delivered at south nassau in September 2011 and loved it - beautiful rooms. My cousin's son had to be in teh NICU for three days and they were great with him.

It's up to you, but I can tell you from going through it twice - there are many things in your pregnancy that you are going to question or worry about and its more important to me at least to be with a doctor that I know is going to do the best for me and my little one :)

I delivered DS#2 at Mercy in 2011 and the visiting hours were not restrictive at all. I had a private room (I believe all the rooms are private now since the baby stays with you in the room) And DS# bvisted my the whole day. I had a c-section in the morning and vistors in the afternoon.

The hospital didn't turn away any vistors or kick them out.

oh really?!? When I had DD and my sisters had their babies (a few years prior) visiting hours were only from 3 to 5 for grandparents and siblings and 6 to 8 for everyone else. During the 6 to 8 window the baby had to stay in the nursery and the siblings could only come in with grandparents or my husband.

I am very interested to know if this changed??? And I believe they try to keep the rooms private, but if they get crazy they will double up unless you pay for a private....I called to check that out..so I probably should call and ask about the visiting hours. thanks!!

Yes good point. I am so nervous starting all over with a new doctor. I feel like I am cheating on him. lol.

I almost thought about trying the new doctor and if I didn't like her then right back to Dr. Brandon. But I keep going back and forth in my head.

Since it's just him he would be delivering and if I go to a women's group then it would not be guaranteed that the new doc I am seeing would deliver. That is a little nerve wracking.

Re: LIJ Womans Hospital vs South Nassau

I always knew that when I got pregnant I wanted to deliver at South Nassau. I heard great things about it, it's close to me and the rooms are all private. I switched my OBs at the request of my fertility doctor, my baby is an IVF baby and started to see a great doctor in RVC. I loved her and probably would have stayed with her except at my 20 week sono there was a problem with the baby that may or may not have required immediate surgery. I switched to a doctor that delivered at LIJ. It was the best decision I ever made. My son was born 6 weeks early and was in the NICU for 41 days. I was not in the new wing, delivered before it opened but the nurses were great!! I had the best NICU care for my son and Im so glad I switched. I love my doctor and he took great care of me.
