Link Between Sodium Intake and Autism?

Someone just told me they read a study that showed a correlation between high levels of sodium intake and Autism. Has anyone ever heard this? Does it have any validity?

Thanks!

Re: Link Between Sodium Intake and Autism?

hmmm, never heard that before...

frankly, while I was studying neurological autoimmune diseases in a class, I noticed many autoimmune/demyelinating diseases (such as MS) are strikingly similar in pathology to autism. Anatomically, autistic brains are insufficiently myelinated (myelin is the insulation to all of our neurological 'wiring'). This is very similar to MS, where an autoimmune response attacks and destroys myelin in the peripheral nervous system.

Frankly, I believe all of the moms and the vaccination link... many moms reported that their children were immunized, got a fever, and then suddenly became autsitic within days. this timeframe is identical to the development of new antibodies... possibly ones that attack myelin?? What would be happening in this situation is that the vaccination induces not only a good immune response against the disease, but ALSO a bad response that is against the child's myelin/brain.

Genetics also likely plays a roll. There are a few genetic mutations that have been linked to autism. (There's now a comprehensive genetics study going on to find all mutated genes in families with 2+ autistic children.)
It's entirely possible that the genes they will find will relate either to myelination and/or promote autoimmune responses.

Since myelination definitely is involved in the development of autism (all of the pathology samples confirm it), and myelination occurs in the brain from birth to about 18 months to 2 years, I am going to be cautious and delay most vaccinations until after Crouton's 2nd birthday. No need to hyper-stimulate the immune system with over 40 vaccinations (I only received 4-6 by that age!) during brain development, IMO....

Re: Link Between Sodium Intake and Autism?

I haven't heard about this link.

I have heard that there is a potential link between IVF/various infertility treatment options and autism.

This comes from several people I know who work with autistic children and found out this was in the history of their birth.

Not trying to get into a debate, but it's pretty scary because there really is no known direct cause to where autism comes from.

My husband and I are also in agreement not to do the MMR shot until around 3 or 4 years of age. We want to do it a maybe a year before school starts. I'm just too scared!

Re: Link Between Sodium Intake and Autism?

Never seen that before.

I am in the field and I believe that the links with autism are purely genetic. I havent seen any recent studies that can persuade me to think otherwise.

My bottom line? People want answers. They want something to blame. As cold as that may sound, thats what I believe.
